Chapter 1

"Aurora, Amber, only one of you can be sent to serve the Beast King."

The moment I heard that line, I knew I had come back to life.

I was right back on the day the human race lost, and my sister Amber Whitaker was to be handed over to the Beast King, Theron Olson.

In our previous life, the beastfolk crushed our armies, took our cities, and turned the survivors into property.

Amber, the crown princess, was born beautiful and handed over to Theron as his concubine.

Compared to her, I was ordinary, so they sent me to the breeding quarters, where beastmen fought over me and used me like a breeding machine.

However, Amber didn't fare well either. She was too soft for palace schemes, and before long, she was framed by the other concubines and died.

I struggled on for longer. When the news of Amber's death reached me, I was lying beneath a beastman.

Pregnancy after pregnancy drained what little strength I had, and in the end, I died exhausted and full of rage.

This time, I refused to let our story run the same course!

My father, King Rowan Whitaker, waited for our answer.

Amber pressed her lips together, ready to give the same answer as before.

I quickly caught her hand. "Let me serve the Beast King this time!"

She stared at me, stunned.

I held her gaze. "You're too kind, and you don't know how to win his heart. The palace will eat you alive. I may not be beautiful, but I know how to survive. Let us switch places. Maybe that's how we break this dead end."

"But…" she hesitated, fear crowding her voice.

I clasped her hands firmly and gave her a reassuring look.

Amber had been raised like a crown jewel, taught to rule rather than to vie for a man's heart. Even if she were reborn, she would still be the same.

I grew up on scraps and palace schemes. Years in the breeding quarters had taught me exactly how beastmen thought and what they desired, even if I wasn't pretty.

Amber saw I wouldn't bend and finally nodded. "If you go to him, promise me you'll stay alert. Don't fall into someone else's schemes like I did!"

I nodded. "Don't worry, I won't. But it means you may have to go to the breeding quarters."

She looked like she wanted to say something, but I cut her off with a tilt of my head toward the fox pelt on the wall.

"Beastfolk are sharp to scent. When you get there, rub fox musk under your arms. They can't stand the smell. It'll keep them away and kill their interest."

Amber's eyes became red-rimmed at my words. "This time, we must change our fate!"

Two months drifted by with Theron sinking deeper into the spell of my desire.By the time the uprising raised its banners over the capital and then over the palace itself, he was still lost in the dream I spun for him.He kneeled at my feet, clutching my ankles and kissing them as if I were salvation. In his eyes, every inch of me was irresistible. In truth, the drug had ravaged me. I was all bones and shadow, a scarecrow draped in silk.Just then, Amber and Carson burst through the doors of the Evendale Wing and caught sight of us as we were.Amber signaled the guards, who tore Theron off me and drove him to his knees with a few brutal kicks. In this life and the last, both our lives had been ruined by Theron. Of course, we hated him.He rolled and crawled toward me like a dog, mind empty of everything but the need to be near me. It was only when I splashed him with the antidote that his eyes finally cleared up."Darling, what's going on?" he asked, confusion clouding his face

I swallowed the pill and felt my limbs go up in flames. Heat tore through muscle and bone until I curled on the floor, shaking and slick with sweat. It hurt so much I thought I would black out.But every time I pictured the beastfolk storming our walls, torches in their fists and blood on their boots, the pain sharpened into resolve. I gritted my teeth and rode it out.It was a prohibited drug, made for the day our ancestors feared would come. The beastfolk were savage by nature, yet they bore a fatal flaw. They reproduced slowly and were driven by an obsession to breed and keep their lines alive.Compared to beastfolk, human women were far more fertile. If the beastfolk conquered us and reduced us to breeding machines, this pill was meant as our last revenge, a way to make them pay in blood. This pill would snare a beastman through lust and slowly destroy the woman who took it. It had been made in secret, known only to the royal line. And now, I was the first to take it.That

The queen's crown brought me power across the palace in a single night.Theron clung to me more by the day, and the only quiet I had was when he went to the council. I used those hours to rekindle old ties in the capital and had them deliver my words. At last, I had eyes and ears in the breeding quarters. When Clara brought me the news, I finally let out a long sigh of relief, and my eyes filled with tears. With fox musk masking her scent, Amber kept the beastmen at bay. She went so far as to scar her own face, stripping away her beauty. They treated her like a laborer, but none dared lay a hand on her, and she survived. What I dreaded most was seeing her forced into the life I had suffered, carrying one beast cub after another until there was nothing left of her.A human who carried a beast cub paid for it with her body, and the damage could never be undone. That was how I lost my life before. This time, every move I made was to keep Amber from becoming a womb on a chain.Ambe

Theron carried me from the shabby Duskmere Wing straight into the Evendale Wing at the palace center, and word of it spread as fast as we moved.By the time we reached his chambers, the whole palace knew I would be sharing Theron's bed.Such favor ignited jealousy, and none felt it more than the queen, Morgana Drelle.Just thinking of her made my blood boil.In my previous life, she spun her lies and staged her evidence until Amber was condemned and died under Theron's rage.I had barely settled into the Evendale Wing when Morgana swept in the next morning with her personal maid, Selene Dale, close at her heels.Morgana didn't waste a word. With a flick of her fingers, Selene seized my arms and forced me to my knees.I lifted my face, looking at her with confusion and fear. "Your Majesty, what are you doing?"The answer was a slap that snapped my head to the side. Heat bloomed across my cheek in the shape of a hand.Cold fury coiled inside me, yet I forced tears into my eyes.

Theron didn't tire easily. The night felt endless, and his desire was unrelenting. The beast in him was far beyond what I was ready for.My body betrayed me with its instinctive responses, yet none of it warmed my heart. If the beastfolk hadn't conquered the human world, I would never have been thrown into the breeding quarters in my last life or learned the tricks that kept me alive there.Disgust churned within me, but I let my cheeks flush and turned my face away. When he reached for me again, I gave in, letting soft moans slip past my lips.Heat thickened the air until the chamber turned hazy with it.I looped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer, my gaze flickering as I bit my lower lip.Theron reveled in that sultry look. He didn't stop until deep into the night. When at last he had the attendants prepare a bath, he lifted me into the warm tub and washed me himself.Sleep pulled me under soon after, and he didn't send me away. Instead, he let me rest in his own bed

Theron carried me into his private chambers. He dropped me onto the bed, and my body turned soft and inviting as he looked down at me with a heat that made my stomach twist.I swallowed my disgust and forced a coy smile. "No, we can't do it here…"He laughed, caught my chin between his fingers, and tipped my face up. "Why not here? I want to have you now."He leaned in and loosened the ties of my dress. Silk slid away, and the cool air found my skin. His gaze hardly moved from me."You look so slim, yet you're surprisingly curvy," he murmured.I let color rise to my cheeks, playing shy even as my pulse raced. His gaze lingered on me, and it looked as if he was barely holding himself back."I want you now. Are you afraid?" he asked."I.. I'm not," I said, though my eyes glistened with unshed tears. The contradiction only seemed to please him, and he laughed again. In the palace, most were crude beastwomen or timid human maidens who cowered when they saw him. I was different,
