The records office gave me a thick manila envelope and a polite apology.

"The final pages are under legal review," the clerk said, sliding it across the counter. "Ten business days."

"Ten days," I repeated.

"For the cause-of-death addendum. Standard procedure."

It wasn't standard. I could tell by the way Imogen's pen stopped moving. But I took the envelope, thanked him, and walked out of St. Anselm's with my mother's last year pressed against my chest like a shield.

I had not read a single page

The boardroom doors were closed. I opened them anyway.Twelve faces turned. Delphine sat at the head of the black glass table, one hand resting on a motion paper. My father sat at her right, staring at the grain of the wood as though it might open."Seraphine," Delphine said pleasantly. "How enterprising. But this is a closed session.""The court order says otherwise.""The court order grants observer status at the board's discretion." She slid the paper an inch forward. "And the board is about to exercise it."Dr. Imani was already half out of her chair. "Madam Chair, this motion was not circulated.""It was circulated this morning.""At eleven fifty. For a noon meeting.""Then you had ten minutes." Delphine's smile didn't move. "Shall we vote?"I stayed standing by the door. "May I at least hear the motion?"Delphine inclined her head, generous as a queen. "Read it, Preston."Hale-Whitcomb cleared his throat. "Motion to revoke observer access to board proceedings and to reassign the

At twelve weeks and one day, I threw up in Locke Meridian's executive washroom and felt, for the first time in a month, completely fine afterward."That's the turn," Nadia had said at the scan the morning before, pushing her glasses up her nose as the screen showed a small, perfect profile, a nose, a curled fist, a flicker of movement. "Second trimester starts tomorrow. The nausea fades. The energy comes back.""You're sure?""I'm a doctor, not a prophet. But yes."Mrs. Hale had cried. I'd stared at the screen and thought, *seventy-three days.*"Eat the toast, madam.""I'm not hungry.""You're growing a person. Hunger is not a vote." Mrs. Hale set a plate in front of me, crisp toast, soft egg, a wedge of pear arranged like a flower, and a mug of her dreadful, wonderful ginger tea. "Eat. Then we'll discuss what you're wearing.""I'm wearing what I always wear.""You're wearing a navy dress that has been seen by three newspapers." She sniffed. "Your mother's old office requires somethin

Marguerite Ellison began to cry before she reached the podium. It was beautiful crying, silent and luminous, tears sliding down her cheeks without a single sob to spoil the line of her face. Every camera in the lobby found her. Every reporter leaned in. "Seraphine," she said again, and her voice trembled exactly as much as it should. "I can't stay silent anymore. Not after what you've said about my family." *Stand still. Let her speak. Then step back.* The thought rose through the noise, small and rehearsed, in a voice that wasn't hers. *Mother wrote this part.* I kept my hands on the wood and said nothing. "You stand there calling yourself a victim," Marguerite went on, with a little catch in her breath. "But you've harassed me. You've turned Evander against me. You've spread lies about my mother, who has only ever shown you kindness. I came here today to ask you, in front of everyone, to stop." A murmur swept the room. Pens scratched. A cameraman near the front adjusted his f

At four in the morning I sat on the edge of the bed in Apartment 4C with the burner in my lap, rereading the last message until the words stopped looking like words."He knows I'm not her," I whispered."He knows something," the system said. "He used the word nurse. He has seen Mara Lowell's file.""Is that possible? You told me nothing of her exists here.""It does not follow that nothing exists elsewhere." A pause, almost reluctant. "Host, I do not know what he is. I know only that he is not afraid of you, and that he is afraid of the child.""Then I won't hide," I said."Explain.""If he's been reading me since the beginning, then hiding is pointless. He wants me frightened and quiet. So I'll be visible. In daylight, on camera, saying everything I know.""That is dangerous.""So is everything else."***Cole Tower's conference room at seven a.m. smelled of coffee and printer toner. Imogen had covered the glass table with paper: production logs, audit certificates, eleven years of d

I ran the whole way from the elevator to the car. Marcus held my elbow and Odley shouted something about stairs, but my heart ran. I called Apartment 4C seven times from the backseat. The line rang and rang."Mrs. Hale's phone is on the kitchen counter," the system said. "It is not moving.""Is she there?""I cannot see inside the building. The privacy shield works in both directions.""Then tell me something useful.""Her last recorded movement was at 11:52, when she opened the refrigerator. It is now 1:38."I pressed my fist against my mouth. Marcus took a corner on two wheels. The lobby smelled same as always. The doorman was not the one I knew.He was younger, stocky, with a buzz cut and a name tag that read DEREK. He looked up from the desk, smiled, and said, "Good afternoon, Ms. Lowell."I had never given him that name.*Don't react,* I told myself. *Don't.*"Where's Walter?" I asked."Called in sick this morning." Derek's smile didn't waver. "I'm covering."*She's early. She wa

The stock opened at 9:30 a.m., and by 9:41 Locke Meridian had lost eleven percent of its value. I watched it happen on Imogen's tablet in the fourth sublevel of Cole Tower, where none of us had slept. The line on the graph didn't fall so much as slide, smooth and unhurried, like a hand pushing something off a table. "Reason?" I asked. "A rumour." Imogen's voice was dry as paper. "Posted at 6:02 this morning on three investor forums and one financial blog. It says Locke Meridian's flagship infusion pump has a firmware fault linked to patient deaths, and a recall is being hushed up." "Is it true?" "There is no fault. I've read the engineering files twice." She scrolled. "But the post cites a 'confidential source inside R&D' and includes a photograph of a failure report. The photograph is convincing." "Whose letterhead?" I asked. "Your mother's." I put my coffee down very slowly. Evander had called twice during the night. The first time, to tell me his grandmother had stopped s
