Chapter 6: Mara Lowell, Apartment 4C

The hotel was compromised the moment Evander Blackwood found it.

I knew that, standing in the lobby at three in the afternoon with Mrs. Hale's suitcase in one hand and Dr. Vance's folder in the other. If a husband who had never looked for me could find me in under a day, so could anyone with a paid driver and a grudge.

"Points balance," I murmured.

"Four hundred and twenty," said the system. "Clinic forgery rewrite: two hundred and seventy awarded. Bonus for protecting the fetus: fifty."

"Don't call her that." I said. Don't say "fetus” like she's a lab sample."

A pause. "Noted, Host. Fetal protection bonus: renamed *Child Protection Bonus.*"

"Thank you."

The blue panel unfolded. I thumbed past the cosmetic options and found the one I wanted. *Safehouse Security Package: 200 points. Includes untraceable lease, alias documentation, reinforced entry, and a ninety-day privacy shield against plot-linked tracking.*

"Ninety days," I said. "How convenient."

"The plot's calendar is not subtle."

I bought it. Then I bought *Prenatal Protection (Basic)* for another hundred, because my hands were still cold from the ultrasound.

The panel chimed and a new address spread across my vision like a map drawn in light.

Apartment 4C was in a quiet brick building on the east side, with a doorman who nodded without asking questions and an elevator that smelled of lemon polish. The lease was already signed. The name on the mailbox said *M. Lowell.*

I stood in front of it for a long moment.

"You gave me my own name," I said.

"Seraphine Locke's name is a target. The alias needed a legal history. Yours was available."

"Mara Lowell doesn't exist in this world." I said.

"Correct. That is why it is safe."

I let myself in. Hardwood floors, a narrow kitchen, one bedroom with a window onto a fire escape and a row of ordinary rooftops. A secondhand couch and a radiator that knocked.

It was the smallest place I'd been in since I woke up in silk, and I cried in the doorway for a full minute because it was the first room in this world that felt like something I'd chosen.

Then I wiped my face and got to work.

***

Dr. Vance arrived at five with a paper bag of groceries and a medical bag over one shoulder.

"You didn't have to come," I said.

"I'm not here as a courtesy." She set the groceries on the counter and began unpacking: oats, bananas, a carton of eggs, a bottle of prenatal vitamins. "I'm here because you're nine-weeks pregnant in a building with no hospital within ten minutes. I'd like to fix that."

"You can't move in."

"I'm not offering to." She pulled out a notepad. "I'm offering to be your doctor, not just for this month, but for the whole thing. Appointments, labs, a number you can call at three in the morning."

I stared at her. "Why?"

"Because someone used my colleague's credentials to try to write your child out of existence, and I'm not the kind of woman who lets that stand." She looked up. "And because you cried at the ultrasound, and nobody should do that alone."

My throat tightened. "I can't pay you what you're worth."

"Mr. Cole already has. Don't argue." She tore off a page and pressed it into my hand. Her private number, her home number, an address in a quiet suburb. "Memorise it. Then burn it."

"Dr. Vance."

"Nadia.” She said, “If I'm going to deliver your baby, you can use my name."

"Nadia." I tried it out. "Thank you."

"Eat something," she said. "Then sleep. In that order."

I ate scrambled eggs standing at the counter while she checked my blood pressure, drew two vials of blood, and gave me a schedule that made my head spin.

"Twelve weeks, nuchal scan. Sixteen weeks, anatomy. Iron levels every month." She snapped her bag closed. "And no stress."

I laughed. It came out ragged.

"I'm serious," she said. "Whatever's chasing you, it doesn't get to touch her. Understood?"

"Understood."

She paused at the door and her voice dropped. "The man who burst in this morning. Is he the father?"

"Yes."

"Does he deserve to be?" She asked.

I looked at the cracked ultrasound printout I'd stuck to the refrigerator with a banana-shaped magnet. A tiny curve, a tiny flicker.

"I don't know yet," I said honestly.

She nodded, as though that were exactly the right answer. Then she left, and I locked the door behind her.

***

At eight, my phone rang, a prepaid burner Rafferty's assistant had sent over by courier, with a single contact saved in it.

"Cole," he said when I answered. No greeting, no softness but somehow the bluntness was a relief.

"It's Seraphine."

"I know. Nobody else has this number." A pause, and I heard paper shifting on his end. "Your trust petition was filed at four. Delphine's lawyers were served at 4:02. They already know."

"How?"

"The court clerk leaked it or someone paid the clerk. I'm checking." Another pause. "How is the apartment?"

"Small."

"Good. Small is harder to breach." Then, quieter: "And you?"

I hadn't expected that. I leaned against the counter, my cup of ginger tea cooling in my hand.

"Tired," I said. "Scared, but better than yesterday."

*Better than yesterday.* He turned the phrase over in his mind, and I caught it. I'd been trying not to read him, but the thought drifted through anyway, uninvited.

*Better. She sounds better. That's something.*

"Are you reading me?" he asked.

I nearly dropped the cup. "How did you—"

"You went quiet at the same moment the line crackled. It's a habit I've noticed in you." His tone was dry. "You don't have to answer. I'm not asking you to stop."

"I'm trying not to."

"I know." Something almost warm moved under the words. "Get some sleep, Ms. Locke. We start moving on Delphine's counter-motion in the morning."

"Rafferty." I called.

"Yes?"

"Why are you helping me, really?" I asked.

For a moment, the line was so quiet I thought it had dropped. Then, very evenly:

"Because you stood in a room full of people who wanted you silent and said no. I've waited a long time to see someone do that."

*And because she may be the only person alive who remembers that night.*

The thought was there and gone, like a hand pulled from a flame. I pretended I hadn't heard it.

"Goodnight," I said.

"Goodnight."

I washed the dishes. I made the bed with sheets Dr. Vance had somehow also brought. I stood at the window and watched the rooftops until the city lights blurred.

"Status," I said.

"Day eighty-eight," said the system. "Eighty-seven days, nineteen hours until the scheduled event. Current points: one hundred and twenty."

"What's next on the plot's list?"

"Scheduled event: *Counter-Motion.* Delphine Locke files an emergency petition to freeze your trust. Estimated filing: tomorrow, 9:00 a.m."

"Already?" I asked.

"The plot has begun to hurry."

I wrote DAY 88 on the bathroom mirror in lipstick, beneath yesterday's date. Then I looked at my reflection, pale, steady, a stranger wearing my fear.

"Mara," I said softly, testing it.

The woman in the mirror lifted her chin, and for the first time, the face stopped feeling like a borrowed coat.

I turned off the light.

On the street below, a dark car idled at the curb with its engine running and its headlights off. I didn't see it. I only felt the faintest brush against the edge of my mind as I drifted toward sleep, a thought not meant for me.

*She's moved. Good. Now let's see who else comes looking.*

I did not hear whose thought it was.

I didn't hear, either, that it was calm, that it was patient, and that it belonged to someone who had been watching the Blackwood family far longer than Rafferty Cole.

The message I wanted Constance Ellison to find was a lie, and I wrote it myself. It took Imogen Fisk forty minutes to turn it into something that looked real: a scanned memo on Locke Meridian letterhead, stamped *CONFIDENTIAL*, claiming that Seraphine Locke had located "a second ledger" proving the Halcyon Row transfers. At the bottom, a single line: *Original stored in Safe Deposit Box 114, Meridian Trust Bank, Fifth Branch.*"There is no Box 114," Imogen said, sliding the file onto her tablet."That's the point." I said."And if she sends someone to look?""Then we'll know who she trusts to do her dirty work." I picked up my tea. "Send it to Marguerite's old email. The one the Ellisons share."Rafferty watched from the corner of Vaughn's office, arms folded. "You're baiting a fox with an empty den.""I'm baiting it with a den it's already afraid to find empty."His mouth twitched. "Send it."Imogen hit the key. A little blue bar crawled across the screen and vanished."Delivered," s

The torn ledger went to Rafferty's team before midnight.By morning, Imogen Fisk, his assistant, had taped the shredded pages into something readable. She delivered the result to Vaughn's office in a plain gray folder, with the dry summary of a woman who had never once been surprised."Eleven transfers," she said. "Locke Meridian operating funds to a holding company called Halcyon Row. Eleven months, same amount each time, and every approval signed *D.L.*""Delphine," I said."Delphine. And Halcyon Row's registered agent is an Ellison family attorney."I stared at the page. Two families, one pipe, and my mother's company running through the middle of it like a vein."That's the first thread," Vaughn said. "We pull it carefully.""How carefully?" I asked."The kind where nobody sees the thread move."I nodded then my phone buzzed with a message from an unknown number, and my stomach turned over before I read it.*Seraphine, it's Marguerite. Please. Can we talk? Just us. I'm so sorry. I

The car outside the courthouse wasn't Rafferty's.I found that out in the back of a borrowed taxi, forty minutes later, with the burner pressed to my ear and Odley's warning still ringing in my head."It isn't mine," Rafferty said. His voice was flat. "Black sedan, tinted windows, no plates?""Plates. I didn't catch them.""I'll find out. For now, don't go to the apartment. Go to Vaughn's office and stay there.""I can't." I said.A pause. "Explain."I watched the city slide past the window. "The Archive says Graham Pryce meets Evander at Blackwood Global at six. At seven, he shreds a ledger from his own filing cabinet. If I'm not there, whatever's in it disappears.""Seraphine.""I know." I said."You are nine weeks pregnant, with a bounty on your reputation and an unidentified car on your tail.""Which is exactly why I need something no one can claim I forged." I swallowed. "Pryce hid three settlement offers from me. If I can make him say so in front of Evander, the Blackwood lawyer

Delphine Locke filed her counter-motion at 8:57 a.m., three minutes early, because she had never once in her life waited for permission.I knew because the system told me while I was brushing my teeth."Counter-Motion filed. Subject: emergency freeze of the Elena Locke Family Trust. Grounds: *the beneficiary's mental instability and unauthorized disappearance.* Hearing scheduled: 2:00 p.m. today."I spat, rinsed, and stared at the lipstick on the mirror. DAY 88. A line of red, a hand-drawn reminder that I was losing a countdown in slow motion.By 9:20, Ms. Odley was in my living room with her coat still buttoned and a legal pad already half covered in her tight, slanted handwriting. A younger man stood beside her in a navy suit, tall and precise, with a leather briefcase held like a shield."Seraphine, this is Idris Vaughn," she said. "Mr. Cole's counsel. He'll be arguing the petition.""Ms. Locke." He shook my hand once, firmly. "I've read your file twice. I have good news and bad ne

The car Rafferty sent was a plain grey sedan with no logo, no driver in uniform, and a woman in the back seat who introduced herself before I'd even closed the door. "Dr. Nadia Vance. Obstetrics." She held out a hand. "Mr. Cole says you need someone who doesn't gossip." "Do you?" I asked. "I deliver babies for a living. I know where all the bodies are buried, and I've never dug one up." Her smile was small and dry. "Seatbelt, Ms. Locke. We're going to take the long way round." We did. Forty minutes of side streets, two U-turns, and a parking garage where we switched cars without anyone speaking. Dr. Vance watched the mirrors the whole time. "You're careful," I said. "I was told there might be a tail." "There was?" I asked. "There was." She glanced at me. "He's gone now." *He.* I thought of the black car outside the Blackwood gates and the thought that had followed me through the dark. I didn't ask. "Scheduled event," the system said in my ear, unusually quiet. "Greenwich Wom
