Chapter 5 :THE PREPPER'S SAFE HOUSE

Siera did not drive home

She drove the other way, north towards the mountains, as the black sedan pulled up behind her. The world's attempt to "fix" the plot was one fatal flaw: it relied on the weaknesses of the original Siera Blackwood, who would not know how to deal with a vehicular assault. Neither would she have a reinforced truck.

Most importantly, she wouldn't know about the cabin.

In The Last Empress , there was a minor character introduced in Chapter 12 - a paranoid doomsday prepper named Frank. He had built an off-grid safe house deep inside the northern woods. It had solar panels, a water well, and a greenhouse.

He also died in Chapter 14 - leaving the cabin empty.

Siera knew exactly where it was. She pulled into a 24-hour diner on the edge of the city, parked her truck behind the building, and checked her space.

[Space Level 5: 200 cubic meters. Garden plot. Greenhouse. Animal pen.]

She climbed into the back seat and pulled a blanket over her, trying to sleep. She had 26 days until the apocalypse. She couldn't waste time on the world's "Fixer" events. She needed a fortress.

The next morning, she drove into a rural farming town. She stopped at a local feed store and bought fifty pounds of chicken feed, rabbit pellets, and bags of fertilizer. Then she went to a hardware store and bought rolls of heavy duty barbed wire, solar powered motion lights, and a generator.

The owner, a burly man with a thick beard, gave her a long look as he rang up the items. "You're the second person this week buying up all my barbed wire."

Siera paused. "The second?"

"Yep. Some older guy. Said he was preparing for the 'end times'." The owner chuckled. "Crazy old coot."

Siera didn't smile. Frank. He was still alive.

She loaded her supplies into the truck - and then into her space once she was out of sight.

[Ding! 50 lbs of feed stored. Animal pen upgraded: 8 square meters.]

She drove further north, the paved roads turning into dirt trails. By late afternoon, she found the turn off. It was a narrow, hidden path marked only by a red ribbon tied to a pine tree.

She drove up the winding trail until the trees broke, revealing the cabin.

It was perfect. A sturdy log cabin nestled against a rocky hillside, with a clear line of sight to the valley below. There was a chain link fence around the perimeter, a well pump, and a shed with solar panels on the roof.

Siera parked her truck and got out.

"State your business!"

The voice came from the porch. An older man stood there, holding a shotgun. He had gray hair, a flannel shirt, and the wild eyes of a man who had been alone in the woods for too long.

Frank.

"I'm not here to rob you," Siera said, keeping her hands visible. "I'm here because I know what's coming. And I know you do too."

Frank narrowed his eyes. "What are you talking about?"

"June 1 st ," Siera said. "The dead will walk. The cities will fall. The government will collapse."

Frank's shotgun lowered an inch. His face paled. "How do you know that?"

"Because I've seen it," Siera said. She didn't tell him about the novel. He wouldn't believe her. Instead, she told him a half truth. "I have... visions. I know it sounds crazy. But I also know that you've been preparing for this for years. I have resources. Money, weapons, supplies. I need a base. You need help securing this place."

Frank stared at her. He was a paranoid man, but he was also smart. He looked at her truck. He looked at her calm, steady eyes.

"You brought a crossbow?" he asked, nodding toward the case in her truck bed.

"And a Glock 19," Siera said. "Plus a lot of instant noodles."

Frank let out a dry, raspy laugh. "Noodles. Hell of a survival food."

He lowered the shotgun completely.

"Fine," he said. "I'm Frank. But if you try to steal my supplies, I'll shoot you myself."

"Deal," Siera said.

Over the next week, Siera and Frank worked. Frank was a wealth of practical knowledge. He taught her how to rig the motion lights, how to reinforce the gate, and how to set up silent alarms in the woods. Siera provided the resources. She used her space to transport heavy items from town without anyone seeing.

She upgraded her space again.

[Space Level 6 unlocked: 300 cubic meters. Small water reservoir (100 liters) unlocked.]

She filled the reservoir with water from the well. She planted more wheat and potatoes in the greenhouse. The animals were thriving.

But the peace didn't last.

On Day 18, a week before the outbreak, Siera was out by the fence, checking the barbed wire. The forest was quiet. Too quiet.

Then she heard the snap of a twig.

She didn't hesitate. She dropped to a crouch, drawing her Glock.

"Don't shoot!"

A man stepped out from behind a thick oak tree. He was tall, with dark hair and sharp intelligent eyes. He wore a leather jacket, and had a duffel bag slung over his shoulder.

Siera aimed the gun at his chest. "Who are you?"

"My name is Julian," he said, raising his hands. "I'm not a looter. I'm looking for Frank. He's an old friend."

"Frank doesn't have friends," Siera said.

"True," Julian said with a slight smile. "But he owes me a favor. And I'm here to cash it in."

Siera didn't lower the gun. There was something about him. Something that made her skin prickle. He looked familiar, but she couldn't place him. In the novel, was there a character named Julian?

"Prove it," she said.

Julian reached slowly into his pocket and pulled out a small, silver lighter. It was engraved with a distinct crest - a crown with a broken sword.

"I know what's coming," Julian said, his voice dropping low. "And I know you're the one who's supposed to die in Chapter 3. Siera Blackwood."

Siera's blood ran cold. Her finger tightened on the trigger.

"Who are you?" she whispered.

Julian looked at her, his gaze intense.

"I'm the male lead," he said. "And I remember the book too."

To gather her supplies and rewrite her death flag and not waste a moment on meaningless things. She dressed fast in jeans, a shirt and boots. No designer clothes. No jewelry save for her mother's pendant. She was not the Siera Blackwood who had laid waste to the world. She was someone new, who prepared well before an apocalypse. She drove the bank and withdrew fifty thousand dollars, then drove to the rural supply store remembered from the novel. The owner was a paranoid man who kept his best stock in the back. The supplies had sustained a group of survivors for months, in the novel, where the store man had died in the first week of the outbreak. This time she would get there first. The store was full of fertilizer and old rotting wood. A bell above her head chimed."Help you?" The storeman asked, looking up from the paper."Seeds." She said. "Wheat, vegetables, herbs.
