Chapter 2: A Knife at My Throat

The steel pressing against my throat was cold, sharp enough to draw blood if I breathed deeply.

I kept my hands at my sides, refusing to show fear. Silence stretched taut, punctuated by pine logs crackling in the hearth.

Grim stared down at me, his ice-blue eyes unyielding. Dark veins pulsed faintly along his jawline—the mark of the Black Vein Curse.

"I asked a question, Duchess," Grim murmured. "How does a noblewoman recognize Nightshade Root? And why claim it came from Prince Jamie?"

My heart beat frantic, but I forced my chin up. In novels, the second a lead displays fear, she surrenders leverage.

"If I were Prince Jamie's spy, Your Grace," I said, "I would have stood quietly and let you drink that wine. You would be dead in three months, and I would be collecting my reward."

Grim did not flinch. "Unless this is a trap designed to win my trust before you strike when my guard is down."

"I do not need tricks to earn your trust," I countered, nudging his blade away. "I need you alive. If you fall, Prince Jamie will execute my family and burn the Northern Duchy."

Grim's dark brows pulled together. "You speak with confidence for someone forced into this marriage."

"I speak with knowledge," I corrected. "Prince Jamie is drowning in debts. He pledged supply routes weeks ago. He sent me as a pawn because he assumes you are too blind to notice his trap."

Grim's eyes narrowed. Supply routes were top-secret imperial matters.

"And what makes you think I won't cut your throat right now?" Grim whispered, stepping forward until his frame eclipsed the firelight.

"Because I am the only person who knows what is actually killing you," I said, looking at the dark veins on his neck. "And it is not just Nightshade Root."

Grim froze, his knuckles turning white around his hilt. Wild aura made the windowpanes rattle.

"Careful, Elodie," he warned. "You are treading on thin ice."

"It is called the Black Vein Curse," I continued. "The court has been feeding it to you through tea rations for three years. It settles inside your core, freezing your blood during snowstorms. Your physicians lied when calling it a rare blood disease."

Grim grabbed my wrist with his free hand. His iron grip was searing hot, holding me firmly in place.

"Who gave you this information?" Grim demanded, leaning down until his dark hair brushed my temple. "Which of my men betrayed me?"

"Nobody betrayed you," I lied. "I observed it. I pieced together ledgers, reports, and Prince Jamie's movements. I chose to align with the man who can wield a sword, rather than the coward hiding behind poison."

For several seconds, neither of us dared to breathe. Electric tension burned between us. He searched my face for any sign of deceit.

Slowly, Grim lowered his sword and slid the blade back into its sheath.

"You are either the sharpest mind in this empire," Grim murmured, his thumb brushing my pulse point, "or you have a suicide wish."

"I am a woman who intends to survive," I replied, smoothing down my dress. "And to ensure our mutual survival, we require a contract."

Grim leaned back against the mantle, crossing his broad arms. "A contract? The capital bride is dictating terms on our wedding night?"

"First, grant me access to archives and apothecary," I stated. "Second, do not execute staff without my review. Third, when diplomats demand taxes, allow me to handle negotiations."

Grim studied me with deep intrigue. "And what does the Grand Duke receive in exchange for surrendering authority?"

"You get the antidote to your curse," I answered. "You get an ally who knows every dark secret Prince Jamie is hiding. And you keep your head attached to your shoulders."

Before Grim could reply, a low brass horn echoed from the outer battlements.

*Booooooom.*

The heavy sound shook the stone floor beneath our feet, rattling the iron chandelier.

Grim's expression hardened into that of a war commander. "The alarm horn at the eastern weapons vault."

The heavy oak doors burst open with a loud bang. Commander Waylon Sharpe stood on the threshold, covered in soot and snow, his armor stained with ash.

"Your Grace!" Waylon reported. "Fire broke out in the armory! Lord Vane and the council surround the courtyard, claiming your escort started the blaze!"

Grim turned his icy gaze back to me. "It seems your former allies are not waiting for the poison to do its work. What is your command, my clever Duchess?"

I gathered the heavy silver train of my wedding dress and walked past him toward the door.

"Simple," I said without breaking my stride. "We go down there and show Lord Vane what happens when he plays with fire in my fortress."

The capital villa of House Cavendish stood tucked away in the northern quarter, built from white marble and ironwood. Inside the master suite, soft lamplight flickered against silk draperies. Elodie stood before an oval mirror, smoothing the waist of a gown crafted from dark navy velvet and mithril thread. The fabric shimmered like stars, its collar lined with silver scales functioning as armor. Grim stood behind her, adjusting the silver clasp of his cloak. In the mirror's reflection, his ice-blue eyes met hers with unshielded intensity. His tall frame dwarfed hers, yet his posture held a quiet reverence that made her heart flutter. "You look like an empress preparing for war," Grim murmured, his voice a low rumble through the room. "I am a duchess preparing to dismantle a prince," Elodie corrected with a small smile, turning to face him. "How do I look?" Grim stepped closer until his boots brushed her silver hem. He reached out with calloused fingers, adjusting a stray pin

The dark stone walls of the Youngblood family mansion loomed ahead, surrounded by manicured hedge gardens and gilded iron gates. As the ducal carriage pulled into the cobblestone courtyard, servants clad in green liveries rushed forward, bowing nervously. Standing at the top of the marble staircase were Count Thomas Youngblood and Countess Marianne, Elodie's father and stepmother. Beside them stood her half-sister, Chloe, wearing a dress of pink silk. When the carriage door swung open, Count Thomas stepped forward with a wide, artificial smile."Elodie, my dear daughter!" Thomas called out with false warmth. "We heard rumors that you survived the northern winter. Come inside! Your family has missed you dearly."Elodie stepped onto the marble pavement, her midnight-blue velvet cloak rustling around her ankles. She did not return her father's smile. Her dark eyes remained unreadable as she looked up at the people who had treated her as a disposable tool for twenty years.Grim dismounted

The carriage rolled smoothly across the frozen highway, its silver dragon crest gleaming under the sun.Inside the cabin, a stone brazier filled with charcoal kept the winter chill at bay. Elodie sat on the bench, spreading parchment ledgers across a table. Her dark velvet cloak rested over her shoulders, its silver embroidery catching the firelight.Across from her sat Grim. Wearing a black silk shirt and trousers, his imposing frame filled the cabin. His ice-blue eyes tracked her fingers as she organized documents detailing Crown Prince Jamie's secret debts."You have been scanning those numbers since we crossed the border three hours ago, Elodie," Grim said softly, his voice vibrating through the space."These numbers are our sharpest weapons, Husband," Elodie replied, her quill dipping into ink. "Prince Jamie borrowed two million gold sovereigns from underground syndicates to fund his private knights. When I present these notes to the Imperial Senate at the Winter Gala, his standi

The dark storm clouds over the Northern Spine broke as the morning sun crested the peaks, painting the snow-covered valley in gold.Elodie sat atop her warhorse beside Grim as their procession rode through the iron gates of the Obsidian Fortress. Behind them, Commander Waylon and fifty northern knights escorted the bound mercenaries in heavy chains, their armor gleaming in the morning light.A large crowd of northern soldiers, servants, and councilors had gathered in the central courtyard, their faces anxious. Rumors of the armory fire, Lord Vane's treason, and the Grand Duke's departure into the blizzard had spread through the castle corridors. When Grim dismounted, a collective breath caught in the throat of every onlooker. For three years, the Grand Duke had walked with a subtle limp, his breath ragged and his skin unnaturally pale from the Black Vein Curse. Today, he moved with the fluid grace of an apex predator. His jawline was clear of dark veins, his eyes glowing with steady p

The dark purple mist coiled in the freezing air like a serpent, emitting a high-pitched humming sound. From the glowing center of the magic circle, a translucent silhouette materialized. It was Sir Cedric, Saintess Ariel's chief knight commander, his face contorted in an arrogant sneer."Grand Duke Cavendish," Cedric's projected voice echoed across the basin, metallic and distorted. "If you hear this message, my mercenaries failed. But Saintess Ariel foresaw your arrival. The mercenary carrying this mark was injected with a blood corruption curse."Before Grim could react, the dark mist surged forward, diving straight toward the Starlight Lilies in Elodie's hands."Elodie, drop them!" Grim shouted.Instead of dropping the flowers, Elodie pulled the lilies against her chest and rolled across the hard snow. She reached into her pocket, retrieving a silver vial of salt and crushed elderberry extract she had prepared in the archives.Uncorking the vial with her teeth, Elodie hurled the si

She raised her bronze crossbow with steady hands, sighting a mercenary who was raising a heavy flask of pitch toward a patch of unburned flowers. She pulled the trigger. The heavy steel bolt whistled through the howling wind, striking the flask directly. Clay shattered instantly, spilling pitch onto the snow away from delicate petals."Duchess, behind you!"
