Chapter 3: Confronting Lord Vane

last update publish date: 2026-10-12 20:53:04

The northern wind whipped through the central courtyard, carrying the acrid stench of burning pine and black gunpowder. Orange flames danced against the soot-stained stones of the armory, throwing shadows across the snow.

A crowd of northern guards and noble councilors stood gathered near the armory doors, their steel swords glinting under the bright firelight. At the head of the mob stood Lord Vane, a stout baron clad in iron ringmail, his face flushed with rage.

"Stand back!" Vane bellowed, pointing a gloved finger at the capital guards huddled near the stables. "These southern dogs set fire to our winter weapons vault! They sought to disarm the North on the night of the wedding!"

"Hold your tongue, Vane," a low, thunderous voice commanded from the shadows of the colonnade.

The courtyard fell silent. The crowd parted as Duke Grim Cavendish stepped into the firelight. His long black military cloak billowed behind him, snow dusting his shoulders. Beside him walked Elodie, her silver train gliding over the frosted flagstones.

Lord Vane flinched at Grim's presence, but steeled his features. "Your Grace! You arrive just in time. The capital escort sent by Prince Jamie has committed treason. We caught them near the oil barrels right as the flames ignited!"

Elodie stepped forward, her dark eyes reflecting the firelight. She did not flinch beneath the hostile, icy glares of forty northern veterans.

"If my capital guards wanted to burn your weapons vault, Lord Vane," Elodie said, her voice carrying cleanly across the courtyard, "they would not have used military oil from the fortress reserves."

Vane sneered, taking a step toward her. "What does a capital bride know about military reserves?"

"I know how to read a supply mark," Elodie replied smoothly. She motioned toward a charred wooden barrel lying on its side near the armory entrance. A dragon emblem was carved into its iron hoop. "That barrel bears the mark of the royal ordnance, shipped exclusively to the northern border three weeks ago under your personal seal. My guards arrived four hours ago. How did they access a locked vault containing your restricted munitions?"

A murmur ran through the assembled northern soldiers. Several commanders shifted their weight, eyeing the emblem on the barrel.

Lord Vane's face turned pale, then dark with fury. "You dare accuse me of sabotaging my own duchy's armory, girl? You are a guest in this castle!"

"I am the Duchess of the Obsidian Fortress," Elodie corrected him, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp register. "And you are a baron whose personal ledgers show a clearance of fifty thousand gold sovereigns from the capital royal bank last fortnight."

Vane gasped, his hand flying to the hilt of his broadsword. "You lie! She uses dark southern sorcery to slander my honor!"

Before Vane's blade could clear its sheath, a flash of dark steel sliced through the freezing air.

Grim moved faster than human eyes could track. In a single fluid motion, his dark blade pressed firmly against Vane's throat, pinning the elder lord back against the cold stone pillar behind him. The icy edge bit into Vane's skin, drawing a thin crimson bead of blood that froze against his iron collar.

"Draw your sword against my Duchess again, Vane," Grim whispered, his ice-blue eyes glowing with a faint violet light, "and I will feed your heart to the frost hounds before the fire dies out."

Vane froze entirely, his breathing shallow and frantic. "Your Grace... she is manipulating you... she is a spy..."

"My Duchess just saved my life from poison inside my own chambers," Grim said, his low voice echoing off the stone walls for every soldier to hear. "She identified the sabotage you failed to prevent, and she knows your financial ledgers better than you do. If anyone in this courtyard is guilty of treason tonight, it is not my wife."

Commander Waylon Sharpe stepped forward, hauling two bound men out from the burning armory doorway. They wore plain leather tunics, their faces smudged with soot.

"We caught these two trying to sneak through the lower drainage grate with empty oil flasks, Your Grace," Waylon reported, shoving the arsonists onto their knees in the snow. "They wear Lord Vane's personal household crest beneath their tunics."

A collective gasp echoed through the courtyard. The northern councilors who had stood behind Vane slowly backed away, lowering their weapons in shame.

Elodie walked over to the kneeling men, looking down at them with cold detachment. "Who paid you to start the blaze?"

The younger arsonist trembled violently under Grim's crushing aura. "Baron Vane! He told us the Crown Prince would reward us with land in the south if we made it look like the capital guards did it!"

Lord Vane's knees buckled, but Grim's blade held him pinned against the pillar.

"Strip him of his titles and chain him in the lower dungeon," Grim ordered coldly. "We will conduct his trial at dawn."

Waylon's men seized Vane, dragging the nobleman away into the dark corridors.

Grim sheathed his sword with a crisp metallic click, then turned his gaze to Elodie. For a brief moment, the icy mask of the northern commander softened into something far more dangerous—profound respect.

"It seems my fortress is full of snakes," Grim said softly.

"Then it is fortunate," Elodie replied, meeting his gaze with unyielding calm, "that you married someone who knows how to handle venom."

The fabric shimmered like stars, its collar lined with silver scales functioning as armor.Grim stood behind her, adjusting the silver clasp of his cloak. In the mirror's reflection, his ice-blue eyes met hers with unshielded intensity. His tall frame dwarfed hers, yet his posture held a quiet reverence that made her heart flutter."You look like an empress preparing for war," Grim murmured, his voice a low rumble through the room."I am a duchess preparing to dismantle a prince," Elodie corrected with a small smile, turning to face him. "How do I look?"Grim stepped closer until his boots brushed her silver hem. He reached out with calloused fingers, adjusting a stray pin in her h

Standing at the top of the marble staircase were Count Thomas Youngblood and Countess Marianne, Elodie's father and stepmother. Beside them stood her half-sister, Chloe, wearing a dress of pink silk. When the carriage door swung open, Count Thomas stepped forward with a wide, artificial smile."Elodie, my dear daughter!" Thomas called out with false warmth. "We heard rumors that you survived the northern winter. Come inside! Your family has missed you dearly."Elodie stepped onto the marble pavement, her midnight-blue velvet cloak rustling around her ankles. She did not return her father's smile. Her dark eyes remained unreadable as she looked up at the people who had treated her as a disposable tool for twenty years.Grim dismounted

Wearing a black silk shirt and trousers, his imposing frame filled the cabin. His ice-blue eyes tracked her fingers as she organized documents detailing Crown Prince Jamie's secret debts."You have been scanning those numbers since we crossed the border three hours ago, Elodie," Grim said softly, his voice vibrating through the space."These numbers are our sharpest weapons, Husband," Elodie replied, her quill dipping into ink. "Prince Jamie borrowed two million gold sovereigns from underground syndicates to fund his private knights. When I present these notes to the Imperial Senate at the Winter Gala, his standi

"If you hear this message, my mercenaries failed. But Saintess Ariel foresaw your arrival. The mercenary carrying this mark was injected with a blood corruption curse."Before Grim could react, the dark mist surged forward, diving straight toward the Starlight Lilies in Elodie's hands."Elodie, drop them!"
