RIVA POV:

The sharp ringing of the doorbell startled me out of sleep. For a split second, I was unsure of where I was. The room looked too grey and desolate to be my own. And none of the furniture looked familiar either. My eyes instinctively fell on the digital clock beside the bed which read 8PM.

I heard noises and rustling coming from around the house.

Ethaniel had mentioned that we were supposed to have dinner and all the other meals in-between together. But the commotion in the apartment

RIVA POV:‘Time to suck it up, Riva!’ I told myself.I walked into the lobby with my head held high. But I couldn’t keep my facade of confidence up as long as I wanted to as a swarm of people surrounded me and snapped pictures. The flash was blinding and the questions thrown my way so personal that I wondered if these people had filters.Out of the corner of my eye, I saw three men dressed in black suits push the journalists aside. I recognized one of them as Ethaniel’s right-hand man. And although I was annoyed by Ethaniel’s need to control everything and everyone like puppets, in times like these, I was grateful for the reporters being herded aside, making way for me.When only the regular customers were left inside the club, I resumed work.I had my back turned to the bar, busying myself in behind-the-scenes work so that I could avoid prying eyes. I felt his presence before I saw him. No, there was no gravitational pull and I definitely couldn’t hear his footsteps or voice through

RIVA POV:I woke up disoriented and my throat hurt. Since I had problems falling asleep last night, I woke up later than usual but felt groggier than I did after eight hours of sleep. The house was awfully quiet and a quick look around told me I had been left alone. Ethaniel had gone off to work while Snow was in some class. The girl had just returned from a year of travel abroad, living away from family, and she had a tutor come to the house until she started school the next education year.I took a long shower and put on my makeup in front of the mirror, but I couldn’t help but feel a little lost. I hadn’t had a day to myself in a while. But the circumstances in which I got some time off was extraordinary. Unfortunately, I didn’t have close friends whom I could call or hang out with. I had moved to the big city in search of anonymity and I guarded it dearly. I didn’t want anyone to know who I was or where I had come from. And in the end, my wish had come true. But the downside w

Ethaniel had mentioned that we were supposed to have dinner and all the other meals in-between together. But the commotion in the apartment was more than what was required to prepare dinner. I took a cleansing breath and mustered up the courage to peer outside and see what was happening. I stumbled across the scene of Ethaniel hugging someone in the huge hallway. A little girl.‘This must be Snow.’Ethaniel had mentioned that the little girl would come back home tonight. After a long time too, judging from the condition of her room. Their reunion was sweet to watch, but I would rather disappear than be caught peeking by them. But

RIVA POV:“You will stay in this bedroom from now on. You can decorate it as you deem fit. I have asked someone to bring your belongings from your apartment. It should arrive shortly.”I didn’t want to know how he managed to find a company to move so quickly, or know which apartment I lived in. The thought that he had known I would eventually cave and live with him irked me. But what was the use of asking him? It wasn’t like he would answer my questions if I asked.“You’re being quieter than usual. But I understand… You’ll have plenty of time to adapt to your new home,” he interrupted my silence. I looked at him. How would he know how much I spoke? From the short conversation over the loud music? On a night I was working, hoping to bag tips? I wanted to bite back. But was there any use talking to him? He would use every word that came from my mouth against me and push me into a corner. Lord knows what he would threaten me with next.I glanced around the room hesitantly. The living co

RIVA POV:“What would I do with a few bucks?” he interrupted plainly. He appeared annoyed by my insinuation. “I know the terms of your parole. If you get into trouble with the law within the next two months, you might be sent to jail. Think carefully about your future. Think about Drew.”I refused to think about how he knew so much about my life when he had met me just a couple of hours ago. I simply wanted to punch that perfect face I had admired so much this morning that I tuned out the warning bells ringing in my head.I wanted to punch him until it hurt me.“You have my attention now. Let’s say I take the bait. What happens after that?” I inquired.Ethaniel’s stance relaxed visibly. It was clear that he was used to having the upper hand. The police station might be a new location for him, but he made a living crawling under other people’s skin and taking advantage of them.I could imagine the restraint it took for him to allow me to be in charge last night. But I had to leave that

RIVA POV:Mr. Havelland interrupted once again, this time forcibly. “Could I get a minute with my client, please?”“That is not necessary,” I tried to speak but the lawyer continued.“I think it is in your best interest if you listen to me first.”I scoffed. “Very well. Let me have a word with Mr. Havelland even though he is not my lawyer. He can then shove these papers.”The officer stood up, eyeing us warily. “Look, this is not how it goes.”Simon showed the cop to the door. “A minute. Please.”There was no room for argument. The cop left the room reluctantly but Simon didn’t seem to be in a hurry. I had no intention of rushing him either. I would face the consequences even though I had not done anything wrong. But I was willing to listen to Simon. But I hoped it was good, or I would have an assault charge added.Simon sipped on his coffee and looked over some notes. “Riva Hearst. 25. Born in Gerva. Your father, Drew Hearst, was a Ranger before he was injured and left duty.” He chuc
