MasukI stepped out of the cab, tossed a few crumpled bills at the driver, and slammed the door behind me. The gate creaked as I pushed it open, and I dragged my feet toward my apartment, every step heavier than the last.
“Hey, sis!” Amaya called from the doorway, her usual too-cheerful tone scraping my nerves. She leaned in to kiss my cheek. I jerked back. “Back off,” I muttered without looking at her. Her smile faltered, but she didn’t say anything. She never did anymore. She was used to this version of me. I walked past her and headed straight to the kitchen. My throat was dry, raw from holding back too many words I never got to scream. I opened the fridge and grabbed the coldest bottle I could find. The chill bit into my palm, grounding me for a second. Amaya hovered nearby, silent. I poured the water into a glass and drank like I hadn’t had a drop in days. The coolness slid down my throat, but it did nothing to quench the fire that burned beneath my skin. I could feel her watching me. I always could. She looked at me like I was some kind of tragic warrior, bruised and worn from battle. But she didn’t understand. She couldn’t. No one could. Still, her eyes told the whole story. Guilt, and pain. She knew what I did to keep this roof over our heads. She knew the nights I came home broken weren’t just bad dreams, they were the price of survival. She knew. And that made it worse. Because I didn’t want her pity. If it were up to me to decide, Kayla would never have to take that kind of job. She wouldn't have to come home with tired eyes and broken silences. She wouldn't have to smile through pain or pretend like everything was okay when it clearly wasn't. Kayla’s always insisted on being the provider, no matter how hard it was. But I know it’s not easy for her. I hear her cries through the thin walls. I see how she stares into space some nights, eyes wide open like sleep has forgotten her. If only Dad weren’t dead... If only Mom weren’t fighting for her life, each heartbeat would be a gamble. Then maybe Kayla wouldn’t have to shoulder so much alone. Maybe we’d be normal. Maybe she’d be free. “Hey, Amaya,” her voice cut through my thoughts, pulling me back to the present. I blinked, startled. “I thought you were ignoring me.” “I wasn’t. Not until I saw you completely lost in thought.” “Oh.” I scratched the side of my head, awkwardly. “You were probably thinking about your upcoming exams?” she asked gently. “Yeah… I guess,” I mumbled. The truth was, I was thinking about her. “Try your best to pass, okay?” she said, her voice soft and warm. “I will. Even if it’s just for your sake, for how hard you try every day.” I gave her a small smile, and to my surprise, she smiled back. That made something tight in my chest ease, just a little. She always looked at me like I was her entire world. And sometimes, it felt like I was. Amaya was strikingly beautiful. She had a narrow, straight nose, bold eyes that carried an unspoken fire, and long, dark hair that cascaded past her shoulders like a silken waterfall. At just eighteen, she was a high school senior who always stood out, brilliant, and determined. She consistently earned gold medals at the end of every term, making the whole school know her name. I had made a silent promise to myself, Amaya would never drop out of school, not like I did. She would finish her education, get a degree, and live a life better than the one I was barely surviving. I loved my little sister more than words could ever express. “Where’s Mom?” I asked. “She’s taking a nap,” Amaya replied. I set my glass down with a light clink. And picked up my bag from the kitchen island, along with the half-empty bottle of water. “I’ll be in my room,” I added, disappearing down the hallway. I walked into my room, dropped my bag on the bed, and headed straight for my drawer without even taking off my shoes. My fingers went straight to the packet of contraceptive pills tucked beneath some random receipts and an old phone charger. I didn’t think twice. I popped two into my mouth and swallowed them down with a gulp of water. I hadn’t had sex with him, not last night. But I am used to this routine now. After every shift at the bar, I took them. It was my way of reclaiming some control. A habit I no longer questioned. Just another part of surviving. The door creaked open behind me. “So, what did you get for me?” Amaya’s voice chimed in as she walked in without knocking, already digging into my bag, as it belonged to her. I sighed, not bothering to turn around. “I wasn’t really in the right frame of mind coming back home. I didn’t get you anything.” Amaya pouted behind me. I could hear it in her voice. “Why do you look so off?” I didn’t answer. She kept rummaging for a second, then froze. “And what’s this? Whose is it?” I turned around. “What is what?” She held up a card between two fingers like it was a dirty tissue. “It’s a card. I found it in your bag.” “A card?” My stomach dropped as I snatched it from her hand. I didn’t even look at it before I snapped, “What?! That creepy ass man dared to slip this into my bag?” My hands tightened around the edges of the card as I flipped it over. Just a name, phone number, and an email address. “What the fuck,” I muttered, jaw clenching. “Now he seems even more creepy and annoying.” “What’s wrong?” Amaya’s voice shifted, more serious now. “There’s this man who came into the bar yesterday,” I said, still staring at the card. “He asked me to spend the night with him. Then out of nowhere, he said he wanted me to pretend to be a mom to his daughter. Just for a day. Said there’s some school event coming up, and he needs someone to be her mom.” Amaya blinked. “A mom? To his daughter? Who even is this guy? I don’t get it.” I tossed the card onto the bed like it burned my fingers. “I don’t know who the hell he thinks he is, but he was too calm about the whole thing. Like it wasn’t even weird.” “You didn’t accept the job?” I shook my head. Amaya sat down on the edge of the bed and tilted her head. “But just think about it... Being a mom for a day or two? That actually sounds way more decent than your work. At least you’d get a break from the bar.” She had a point. I hated that she had a point. “And why didn’t you go for it?” she continued. “Was the pay too small?” “No, that’s not it.” I looked down at the floor, swallowing the bitter lump in my throat. “But who would want a…” “A what?” Amaya pressed. “Ohhh... Is that why you think he’s creepy?” I didn’t answer. Not because I didn’t have a response, but because I didn’t want to say it out loud. I didn't want to admit that deep down, I didn’t think I was good enough for a pretend role like that.A choking moan filled my throat as he kissed my neck down to my breasts. "Cheers to more nights to come," He smiled as he made me lie on my back. He got on top of me and made his hands explore every part of my body before thrusting into me. My moans grew louder, and he covered my lips with his. I gave myself in totally, enjoying the blissful moment. I'll forever look forward to more nights with no one else but Damian Cole because every night with him has made me feel so complete and I know it'll continue to be that way. A night, which is often termed the darkest moment of the day, had actually turned out to be my own brightest moment. He had turned my darkness into the brightest star I had ever seen. "In another's darkest moment lies the brightness of another" ~Epilogue~ "A year later." Emily sat in my workshop, rocking little Ivan to sleep in her arms while I worked. My business was booming fast and I now have dozens of workers, though I still prefer sewing in
"Of course but she's the bride, she needs to look different and stunning" Nicky said and Emily shrugged. "Amaya, help Sabrina unwrap her candy" Emily said after seeing Sabrina struggle with the candy wrap. "Your daughter is so cute" Amaya said to Christiana, who smiled. She helped Rina unwrap her candy and handed it to her. "Thank you" Sabrina gave Amaya a big toothless grin. Fleur started with the makeup after she was done with the hair. It looked beautiful, as it already highlighted Kayla's face. Fleur is so competent, as Andrew had said. "I'm so excited," Amaya beamed. "About the wedding or because you'll be seeing Andrew soon?" Nicky teased and they laughed. Dominic and Andrew were with Damian in his hotel. Damian's parents, Mom, Mrs. Amara, and Nicky's Mum were already at the wedding hall, putting things in order. Andrew's parents and so many other dignitaries would be gracing the occasion, which means the security would be very tight. "Now, your dress,"
"I saw how nervous you were up there," He whispered to me, and I nodded. "Good job," He winked, and I smiled. "Mr. Charles, the medical records indicated no form of psychological issue. Mr Seth is very okay medically" Mrs. Chantelle said. "He thought he might be suffering from it" Charles said. "Well..turns out he isn't, he's medically okay, so this claim of yours has been dismissed. It doesn't justify his actions," Mrs. Chantelle said. "Do the attorneys have anything else to say?" She asked. "No, your honor" Simone and Charles said in unison. "So say you both?" The judge asked for confirmation. "Yes, your honor" they said in unison. "Having thoroughly gone through the evidence... Mr. Seth and his accomplices are found guilty of the allegations leveled against them." The judge said Serena and Marie burst into tears while Zack tried hard not to cry. Tasha bit her lower lip painfully, stifling her tears. Seth glared at the judge, like he would strangle her if he wasn't handc
"Well, I didn't mean to reveal this this way, but has anyone ever wondered why my last name is concealed ?" he asked. "Because your father is an infamous safecracker, of course, and you're so ashamed of his last name," One of the students said, and the rest burst into laughter, agreeing with her. Andrew also joined them in laughing and Amaya and Dominic knew the students were in for it. "Well..that infamous safecracker is the reigning Prince of King City, automatically making me a prince. I'm Prince Andrew Louis of King City," Andrew said boldly. He had never felt so proud announcing his Royal status. The students gasped in shock, and before Andrew could utter another word, they all bowed to him in great respect, apologizing as if their lives depended on it. "A week later." It was a Saturday, the day Seth and his accomplices would be given a deserved judgment. Nurse Tasha, who had given Serena the slow poison, has also been arrested; she was seated with them, handcuffed. Damia
"Dr. Damian said not to allow you to carry anything, he's going to get pissed at me if I leave you to it, ma'am," The maid said. "Ohh," I said and allowed the maid to carry my luggage into the house. I walked after her in a pink short gown that showed off my small tight bump. She had made her hair fall down to her waist today without styling it. She said hi to the workers as she walked past them, looking forward to seeing Damian again, like it's been years since they last saw each other. He was waiting in the living room, and he swooped me into his arms immediately I walked in. We both giggled like kids who had just been given candies. "I can't believe I'm here. I've always wanted to work in Damian Cole's mansion , it has been on my mind since the day I came for the interview," Christiana said, looking excited as she stood beside me in my workshop. I smiled, glad to have resumed sewing. I experimented with the ideas that have been in my head, and they came out fine. I have a
"No one should be trusted, this world is full of deceit. One needs to be extra careful and observant," I said. "Indeed" Mrs. Cole nodded in agreement. "Well..I'm glad everything is over now, I'm just so glad." Mr. Cole smiled. "You don't know how happy I am to have you back." Dominic grinned. "Because of the dress I want to make for you to give to Nick, right?" I teased and they shared another round of laughter. "I can't wait for you to start reading me interesting bedtime stories again." Emily smiled. She was sitting close to me, and they both were not willing to let go of each other anytime soon. "So..the ones I've been reading to you are not interesting," Dominic rolled his eyes playfully. "Gross. You even sleep off in the middle of reading me a bedtime story, and I used to be the one reading it to you in the end," Emily said, and everyone laughed again. There was so much joy in everyone's eyes, the atmosphere was serene. They all felt fulfilled and happy. "When are Chris
"No! Please, he's still so young for that, and besides, helping with the outbreak is voluntary, you can't force him to go there," Kayla said. "I know, but I'm gonna threaten him with that to see if he's really gonna turn a new leaf, and you need to stop being lenient with him; he needs our help to
Amaya was allowed into Damian's mansion without question, she greeted the workers as she walked into the main house. "They're in the dining room," Zack told him. "Thank you" Amaya said and walked towards the diner. She walked into the dining room the moment Dominic was yelling at Kayla. "Do not
Few minutes later, Dominic walked in with the proprietor. Amaya sighed disappointed he had actually gone to call her. She's not nice at all, she's mean. "There they are," Dominic said with a triumphant smile as he approached them with Mrs Natalie. Amaya got to her feet, and so did Andrew. "Do
"I thought you came to me cause you already have a price?" Mrs Cole asked Kayla who stood before her but she wouldn't talk. I had approached Mrs Cole in the living room where her feet were being massaged. "Yes ma'am" "Then speak!" Mrs Cole said, getting annoyed. "The price is ten thousand dolla
