Chapter 3

Author: Wayne Wyeth
Seeing that I stayed on my knees, Lisa finally stopped scowling. "You would've been fine if you had just behaved, but you had to cause a mess! It's what you deserve!"

She then told Jimmy, "Watch him! He pushed Hal—he's staying there the whole day for that!"

With that, she left with everyone, while my soul followed them and noticed the back door of the shelter.

They clearly knew their way, as they soon emerged at the luxurious Crawford Villa where I had lived for over a decade.

I stared at them blankly, floating in the air while my chest hurt.

Three years ago, the Great Drought scorched the earth, killing all plants and causing countless fatalities.

My family was worried since I had a bad heart, and they quickly packed everything and took me to this so-called shelter.

I had forgotten my medicine, and they didn't hesitate to rush home for it with Hal.

Soon, we were informed that they had died of 'spontaneous combustion'.

I cried so much that I was choking and went three days without food, and I lived the next three years riddled with guilt that I had caused their deaths.

But there was no apocalypse, let alone sacrifice.

And I really didn't know how I should react to that.

-

Hal was nestled on the living room couch, and it was clear it was his favorite spot.

He smiled with sweet innocence as my parents sat by his side. "It will be three years tomorrow, so I've made an edit of the video of Neil's time at the shelter. Check it out—do you think he'll like my present?"

Mother tousled his hair, her smile at once content. "You've always been such a good kid, Hal. You're even thoughtful enough to get Neil a present after what he did to you."

Lisa snorted coolly, her eyes devoid of warmth. "Hal is just so kind. If Neil keeps throwing tantrums, then we can keep him at the shelter. Don't enable him."

I floated in front of them, feeling chills despite being just a ghost.

'There's no need to wait, Lisa—I'm already dead, and you're all just punishing a corpse.'

Lisa pulled out a tablet in an instant.

I wanted to rush up and stop her before I knew it, as I didn't want them to see me being a mess.

But it was too late, as Lisa tapped into the camera feed to see me lying limply.

-

Whenever I was given little scraps of food and supplies, I'd quickly find myself mobbed, punched, and kicked all over endlessly.

Even as the mob did it, they'd be laughing.

"Take what you want! He is the chief's brother, and she has a lot of good stuff! She wouldn't care!"

"Don't worry about him! Do whatever you like!"

"We have the chief's permission! Hit him!"

I curled up and begged them to stop.

When I complained to Lisa each time, she'd just frowned and snapped at me, "It's your fault. You can't even protect what's yours, and you're always complaining."

I thought she blamed me for our parents and Hal's death, so I never argued hard.

It was only now that I realized she was just punishing me for Hal.

-

Even as the video of me kept playing, rowdy laughter rang from the shelter.

Soon, the camera angle changed to show Lisa standing on the balcony of Crawford Villa, holding a stack of hundred dollar bills and throwing it to the actors in the shelter.

The cheers were thunderous and fawning.

"Thank you, Ms. Crawford! We make more money working for you than working an honest job for three years!"

"She really loves her brother, spending a ton just to fake the apocalypse and get even for Hal's sake!"

"Those three years are so worth it! Neil won't ever bully him again!"

Even as Lisa's voice cracked and turned hoarse, she kept apologizing."I'm sorry, Neil. I should have trusted you…"I shouldn't have favored anyone else…"I shouldn't have punished you… tortured you…"Just come back… I'll give you anything…"My time, my love, my presence… Anything…"I watched her beg so humbly and hysterically and shook my head. No, I didn't want any of it—not after they destroyed my life.My parents almost passed out from crying, repeatedly lamenting and confessing how they played favorites and were ignorant and foolish. After the funeral, Hal came over, ready to comfort them, when Lisa kicked him to the floor and rasped, "You framed Neil from the start, didn't you?"Hal turned pale, but he shook his head repeatedly. "No, I didn't! Honest! Trust me…"Lisa didn't even look his way as she muttered, "I've asked around… I should have done that from the start! Why?! Why didn't I?!"So, she finally did a proper investigation and found out that Hal had set me up.

I was standing on the opposite end of the table, laughing at Lisa as my tears rolled down my cheeks. 'But I'm not a normal person—did you forget I have a heart condition?'Mother had her hand clasped over her mouth as she leaned into Father's arms, trembling endlessly.Dad had his hand over her shoulder, his eyes red and his voice hoarse. "Let's go to the police precinct! Hurry!"Lisa arched her back to pick up her phone, her fingers shaking too much to actually use her screen, and she didn't even change her shoes as she dashed out of the front door.I floated behind their black SUV, watching as they ran through three red lights, sparks flaring out of the tires. The coldness inside the morgue cut to the bone, and there was a persistent dull hum from the lightbulbs overhead.I wafted over to a corner as I watched Lisa lifted the white cloth covering my body, revealing my face.My cheeks were purplish-blue and my lips were cracked while my eyes stayed half-open, all light lost fro

I couldn't touch the photo even as I curled up on top of my narrow bed.I could hear the rest of my family being merry downstairs, none of them looking up once.Lisa was scrolling through her phone for a while, and she eventually slammed it on the table. "That's enough. I'm going to bed—I'll go see him if he still refuses to come tomorrow."My tears covered my face as I watched her go.Did she forget that she tied me to that pole in the shelter for 24 hours, baking under the 122°F heat?'You said I'd live, but you forgot I had a heart condition.'Naturally, no one heard me, while I stayed in my room the whole night beside the photo taken on my birthday, as if waiting for them to find their conscience and rush upstairs or to notice that I was already dead. But no one came even after the lights were turned off.The next morning, I floated to the dining table, watching as they ate breakfast. Hal was happily cutting into his eggs and giving Lisa some. "Neil's still not back yet?

"Alright!" Lisa exclaimed. "That was just a distraction—let's keep the party going! It's Neil's own fault if he doesn't want to come home!"Everyone cheered rowdily right then. "Hurray! It's alright, Ms. Crawford! It's better if Neil never shows up!""Yea! I'm so sick of him throwing tantrums for three years at the shelter!""Hal is so much better! He's always so kind and understanding!""It's a happy day! Don't let anyone be a buzzkill!"The voices and laughter all stung my soul, leaving me flustered even as I watched them mock me.'Lisa, Mom, Dad…'Can you please check? That body really is mine.'I couldn't hold on after you tied me to the pole, leaving me under the baking sun.'But no one could see or hear me, and the party kept going late into the night under the dazzling lights.Everyone was celebrating the end of my three-year long punishment, and that their family was whole again, somehow forgetting that their real family member was already dead in that silent shelte

The liveliness of the party faded right away, drowned out by the patrol car sirens. However, Lisa looked annoyed—even cold. Not flustered at all, she said calmly, "My private shelter is closed to the public. How is it my fault if someone sneaked in and died? I can pay damages if necessary. Please don't disturb my party."My parents were frowning in annoyance too, with my father saying, "Officer, it's my son's homecoming party today. It's an important day, so please don't sour the mood over something so trivial."I was shaking as I floated in the air.So I was trivial? Me? The son you had punished for three years and left baking under the scorching sun? However, the officers remained solemn. "Ms. Crawford, the body was found at the private shelter, which you have full authority over. No one could have barged into that enclosed facility.""As he was left under the sun the whole day under 122°F, his face was too disfigured for identification. We need a family member."122°F.As s

With that, all the actors left the shelter through the back door, leaving me alone inside.-I used to curl up in a corner of the shelter, trembling from hunger and eating rats just to survive.Naturally, I was still bony, but everyone else kept the act going to convince me that it was an apocalypse. After the video was over, Hal's eyes were wide with feigned surprise and concern. "Neil was eating rats? Poor Neil… Those three years must have been hard on him."Lisa, however, simply locked the tablet screen and said coolly, "It's what he deserved for always bullying you. If he was suffering, it's only right. At worst, I'll just tell him and throw him a homecoming party—he's always loved parties, and it's more than enough to make it up to him."So she did remember that I loved parties. When we were kids, she'd throw surprise parties if she got me upset. It was such a shame that I couldn't attend this party. With that, my body stayed tied to the pole, baking under the sun for an
