Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
On the screen, Maisie was happily chomping on extra-spicy barbecued beef, washing them down with a large cup of ice-cold soda. She laughed like she didn’t have a care in the world.

Meanwhile, my taste had always been on the lighter side. Now, with the pregnancy symptoms tormenting me instead of her, I was drenched in cold sweat, retching nonstop.

Furious, I called her. When she picked up, she acted like nothing was wrong, her voice fake.

“Oh, hey, Clara. Why are you up so late? I’m just out eating barbecue. If it’s nothing important, don’t bother me, okay? Oh, and please don’t tell Mom about this. You know how she nags too much.”

I couldn’t take it anymore. I shouted, “Maisie, what the hell have you done to me? Why is it that ever since you got pregnant, every single side effect has become mine?”

On the other end of the line, she ignored me and ordered even more spicy food. It made me vomit so violently that my whole body trembled.

Maisie put on her innocent act as she said, “Clara, are you paranoid? I’m just a pregnant woman. How could I possibly do anything to you? You’re just jealous that I’m carrying the baby and getting Alex’s attention. Is this your pity play?”

Then, she lowered her voice like she was giving me an ultimatum. “Tell you what. If you admit you’re faking it, I’ll stop eating.”

She ordered even greasier, spicier food. My stomach convulsed until I was crying in pain.

Finally, I broke. “Fine! Yes, I’m faking it! Just stop it already, please!”

The very next second, a man’s furious voice thundered through the phone. “Clara! You’ve disappointed me beyond words!”

It was my husband, Alex.

Maisie burst out laughing and hung up.

After another wave of vomiting hit me, my body collapsed, and with the last bit of strength I had, I dialed 911.

The ambulance came just in time before I blacked out for eight hours. When I woke, the doctor told me I had collapsed from dehydration and shock due to severe pregnancy reactions. However, after running all the tests, they still couldn’t find a medical cause.

“There’s nothing unusual here. Do you have any clue what might be going on?” the doctor asked.

I didn’t answer. Instead, I signed the discharge papers on the spot and rushed home to approach the one who conspired in this. The moment I saw Maisie, I grabbed a kitchen knife and pressed it to her throat.

“Clara, what are you doing?” she gasped.

Refusing to play along with her act, I glared at her swollen belly and growled, “Cut the act. Tell me. Why are all your pregnancy side effects showing up on me?”

Maisie widened her eyes and put on a pitiful expression. “You’re imagining things. You must really have paranoia.”

I shoved the blade closer to her stomach. “Stop the fake act. Speak!”

She shrieked. “Okay, okay! I’ll tell you!”

However, before the words left her mouth, she burst into fake tears. “Alex, help me!”

I didn’t notice Alex sneaking up behind me until he yanked the knife from my hand and kicked me hard in the chest.

“Clara! How dare you threaten Maisie? Do you have a death wish?”

Then, Susan rushed over and slapped me across the face.

“You little tramp! I thought you’d matured, but you’ve been plotting this all along! How dare you try to harm my grandson? I’ll kill you first!”

Alex and Susan immediately called the cops, insisting I needed to be punished.

When the police arrived, Alex played a recording from that night.

“Officers, my wife claims Maisie transferred her pregnancy symptoms to her, but listen carefully, she admitted that she was jealous.”

Then came my own voice in the recording, “Fine! Yes, I’m faking it!”

The officers’ faces hardened instantly, and they cuffed me on the spot.

“Throwing a jealous tantrum to this degree? This is absolutely irrational,” one of them scolded.

I struggled, desperate to explain, but then I caught sight of Maisie in the corner, smiling as she bit into a mango.

The allergic reaction hit me instantly. It felt like invisible hands clamped around my throat, choking me. My limbs convulsed, my vision went black, and I clawed for help.

Alex just sneered. “See, officers? She’s putting on another act. Now you can witness it yourselves.”

Alex realized there was no saving the situation. With a flick of his sleeve, he walked out without even sparing her a glance. He’d already taken Maisie to the hospital too many times in the past few days, and every visit ended the same way. He was done caring. It was me who called 911 and got her rushed to the hospital. The doctors ran their usual tests, but, as always, they found nothing concrete. All the symptoms pointed to pregnancy, yet when they did an ultrasound, there wasn’t just no baby, but there wasn’t even a uterus to be found. With no answers, the doctor prescribed some sedatives and had her lie down.Once her emotions finally settled, I walked in with her medical report in hand. Maisie’s eyes locked onto me. Realizing I’d discovered her secret, that she was barren, her fake act dropped.“What are you doing here?” she spat. “You must be thrilled seeing me like this, aren’t you?”I said nothing. She took my silence as agreement and let out a bitter laugh. “Hahaha! You

At that moment, the livestream had hundreds of thousands of viewers watching. When I spoke up, every pair of eyes zeroed in on Maisie’s soaked yoga pants.“Wait, did she seriously pee herself again? She’s pregnant. Shouldn’t she be resting at home instead of embarrassing herself like this?”“Didn’t she claim she had recovered? And now this? How gross.”“Is she addicted to the attention or what? Peeing on the stream every day? That’s some nasty fetish.”Seeing tens of thousands of insulting comments flooding the screen, Maisie finally broke down. She let out a wail and burst into tears.“I… I couldn’t hold it in! I didn’t mean to, I swear!”However, the harder she cried, the worse it got. Urine kept spilling down her legs, and with her emotions spiraling, even milk started leaking through her sports bra, soaking her top.Horrified at the spectacle, Maisie screamed, covered her face, and tried to flee off-camera.Alex, though, grabbed her arm coldly and yanked her back. “Hold it.

Alex walked up to me with a smile, reaching for my hand, as he apologized guiltily. “Baby, you’re finally back. Maisie and I haven’t seen you in so long. Mom’s waiting at home for you, too.”I pulled my hand away in disgust. “If you’ve got something to say, spit it out. I’m busy.”He looked annoyed, but he forced himself to swallow it down and appease me.“I know I upset you. I shouldn’t have cared so much about Maisie and made you jealous. That was my fault. But we’re still family, right? We should share our blessings and carry our burdens together.”Then, he quickly added, “Maisie has a fitness livestream in a few hours. One of the assistants called in sick. Could you step in to help? You don’t have to do much, just be on camera. I’ll split the profits with you.”I immediately understood what they were up to.Today was her big broadcast. Rather than worry about what tricks I might pull behind the scenes, they’d rather keep me right in front of their eyes, where they could monit

On the other end of the line, Alex went completely silent. For a long moment, he couldn’t say a word. It wasn’t until he heard my mom calling me to the dinner table that he finally spoke.“You went back to your parents’ place?”I didn’t want to argue with him, so I tried to hang up quickly. However, before I could, Maisie’s voice cut in.“Clara, why’d you go back home?”“What does it have to do with you?” My voice was ice cold.Maisie, unfazed, carried on shamelessly. “So, when are you coming back? Alex, Mom, and I miss you so much!”Biting back my disgust, I deliberately said, “Probably in a week.”Sure enough, after I hung up, Maisie posted a new video online. She announced that in one week she’d be restarting her fitness challenge. In the video, her makeup was flawless as she explained that her “previous mistake” was only due to lack of sleep. She claimed she had recovered after some rest and even bragged that she would livestream herself doing four straight hours of workout

“If it weren’t for the fact that my illegitimate child needed a respectable title to return to the Freddrick family, you, a barren woman, would’ve been kicked out by me and my mother long ago! Otherwise, why would I ever need you to fake a pregnancy for us?“As a trade-off, I even invested in that livestream of yours to boost your popularity. And what happened? You ruined it! All the money I put in has gone straight down the drain!”So that was the truth. In my past life, this entire scheme had been unfolding behind my back, without me knowing a thing.Glancing at the documents I’d gathered, everything suddenly became clear. The Freddricks weren’t exactly an influential family, but they had a name and reputation in the city. Naturally, they wanted a boy to carry on the family line. Unfortunately, I was childfree by choice, and Maisie, after marrying into the family, was diagnosed as infertile. With Susan growing desperate, she found a rural girl fresh out of college and paid her

This time, Maisie’s fitness challenge failed, and the moment she wet herself on camera went viral across the internet.Countless onlookers mocked her for pushing her body while pregnant. Some even gave her a cruel new nickname, “Leaky Maisie.” Her reputation was utterly destroyed. After she fainted, Maisie was rushed to the hospital. The doctor’s examination showed nothing serious, just that she needed rest. However, Alex and Susan weren’t satisfied. They immediately pressed him.“If she’s fine, then why would she suddenly wet herself like that?”The doctor glanced at Maisie’s swollen belly and explained patiently, “During pregnancy, the pelvis expands, and it’s very common for women to have urinary incontinence. This is perfectly normal.”However, instead of relief, their faces went pale. They exchanged looks, muttering under their breath, “No… that’s impossible…”When Maisie finally woke up, she bolted to the bathroom the moment she opened her eyes. As soon as she stepped out,
