Chapter 1

Maybel's POV

"What do you need the letter of non-prosecution for?"

Adrian Whitaker sat behind the desk in the CEO's office on the top floor of the Whitaker Group, dressed in a custom-tailored suit as he looked down at me.

Yet just a few months ago, he'd been the man in an old tank top who followed me everywhere I went.

The air-conditioning in the executive office was cranked so high that goose bumps rose across my skin.

All I could think about was my husband sitting in detention, so I answered honestly, "I have a relative who worked for your company. He was made the scapegoat for someone else and got arrested.

"I don't want money or a life of luxury. I just want this letter confirming the company won't press charges so he can get out."

When Adrian heard I was trying to save a relative, some of the tension in his expression eased.

But Charis Lambert, standing beside him, felt her eyes well up with tears and said sarcastically, "Adrian, Maybel Dawson saved your life and took care of you for so long. Even if she asked you to marry her in return, no one could really blame her.

"But now she's pretending she doesn't want anything and making up this ridiculous excuse. Obviously, she's upset because I'm here.

"I feel so guilty, but why should I? You and I were the ones in love before you lost your memory! And now somehow I'm the one who looks like I don't belong."

With that, she burst into tears.

Adrian immediately pulled her into his arms. When he turned back to me, his gaze was cold again.

"Maybel, remember your place. Charis is generous enough not to hold this against you, but I've already told you that she is the only woman who will ever be Mrs. Whitaker."

I kept my head down. There was still only one thing I cared about.

"Okay. Then, Mr. Whitaker, can I still have the letter of non-prosecution?"

Come on. Hurry up.

A place like the county jail could wear a person down more with every day they spent inside.

My husband, Nico Reynolds, already had a terrible stomach condition. A few more days in there would be awful for him. And his case was about to be handed over to the district attorney for prosecution.

We were running out of time.

My response seemed to catch Adrian off guard, and his expression darkened further. He gave a cold scoff. "Fine. You're an ordinary woman who took care of me for so long in that coastal town. I've always believed in repaying what I owe. I'll sign the letter."

Caleb Foster, his assistant, presented the official document to me with both hands.

I took it just as carefully, as though I'd been handed a treasure.

"Thank you, Mr. Whitaker!" I bowed, turned, and rushed for the door.

I was moving so fast that I even stumbled in front of the glass doors.

I left too quickly to see Adrian instinctively reach out as if to steady me, only for his hand to freeze halfway.

However, I did hear his cold scoff behind me.

"Running away that fast because she doesn't even dare let me see her cry. So much for pretending she doesn't care."

Charis turned and nestled against Adrian's chest, giving him a light, petulant tap. "Adrian, look at her. She got what she wanted and couldn't even bother to say anything nice."

Adrian slipped an arm around her waist and patted the back of her hand reassuringly. "Don't be upset. She comes from a humble background. It's only natural that she doesn't know how to behave properly."

Adrian stared toward the office doors, a complicated emotion flashing through his eyes—part satisfaction, part absolute certainty.

"She took a bottle meant for my head when those thugs came after me. Then, during that torrential downpour, she carried me to get medical help even though she had a high fever herself. She's hopelessly devoted to me. She was willing to risk her life for me."

"Now I've taken over the company, and she has to watch me holding your hand. She must be devastated. That's why she's deliberately acting so indifferent. She wants my attention."

Charis bit her lip, jealousy flashing in her eyes. "Then what are you going to do with her?"

Adrian gave a quiet laugh. "She saved my life. If I simply let her walk away, what would everyone in our circle say about me?"

He turned to Caleb and lowered his voice. "Draw up an employment contract. Maybel Dawson will be my personal housekeeper. Have her move into the hillside estate. After Charis and I are married, we'll decide what to do with her."

Caleb froze for a moment before quickly agreeing.

Charis's face instantly went pale. She grabbed Adrian's sleeve. "Adrian! You said..."

"Charis, be good." Adrian cut her off, his voice gentle but carrying an authority that left no room for argument. "You're the one who's going to be Mrs. Whitaker. No one can take that away from you.

"But Maybel is deeply in love with me. Keeping her around as a housekeeper will at least give her a small piece of what she wants. As long as she behaves herself at the estate from now on and stops trying to compete with you, what's the harm in supporting her for the rest of her life?"

Later, I heard bits and pieces about what had happened back in Ashbourne from tourists passing through town.Apparently, after Adrian returned from the coast, he became seriously ill.Once he recovered, his personality changed completely. He became a cold, ruthless workaholic, and no woman was ever seen by his side again. As for Charis, she completely lost her mind while confined to the psychiatric hospital. Every day, she screamed curses at the air, calling out my name. The executive who had framed Nico was eventually investigated after Adrian went to the police, and he ended up in prison.Nico's name was finally cleared for good. But he turned down recruiting offers from other major companies, perfectly content to run our little restaurant by the sea.The wind had died down, and the sky was streaked with the colors of sunset.Nico pulled the restaurant's rolling door halfway down and flipped the sign to "Closed".Then he came over to the register, picked up the ledger I'd jus

The restaurant instantly descended into chaos. Tables and chairs went flying as screams rang out one after another.Nico fought like a tiger protecting what was his, wielding the wrench so fiercely that no one could get near him. Those elite bodyguards who normally threw their weight around at the Whitaker Group were practically made of paper in front of him. Anyone he hit went down, and anyone he so much as clipped was injured.Within minutes, more than a dozen bodyguards were sprawled across the floor, groaning in pain.Nico wasn't even out of breath. He tossed the wrench onto a table and looked coldly at Adrian.Adrian's expression had gone beyond ugly. He stared at his men writhing on the floor, his entire body shaking with rage, then suddenly turned and roared toward the door."Legal! Get the legal team down here! I want this restaurant bankrupt by the end of the day, and I want both of you behind bars for the rest of your lives!"Outside, several black sedans immediately s

I sighed. "Mr. Whitaker, it seems you still don't understand me very well."My husband, Nico Reynolds, was framed by an executive at your company for embezzlement six months ago. He was thrown in jail and was facing a heavy sentence."I'm just a woman with no money or connections. Trying to overturn his case in Ashbourne was nearly impossible. Then, just when I'd run out of options, I happened to rescue you during the hurricane after you'd lost your memory."I paused, watching Adrian's expression gradually stiffen, then continued, "So I worked three jobs and pretended to take care of you without a single complaint."I've lived in this town for years. I'm good at reading people and situations. That thug's bottle wasn't actually going to hit you. But if I threw myself in front of you and took the hit instead, then in your mind, I'd become the woman who saved your life."Adrian looked as though he'd been struck by lightning. He stumbled half a step backward.Looking at his deathly p

Seeing Adrian's face turn deathly pale, I decided to make myself absolutely clear."I did all of that for one reason: to get that letter. If you'd died, who was I supposed to get it from?"I never once thought about competing with Charis for the title of Mrs. Whitaker. If anything, I couldn't wait for the two of you to hurry up and get married so you'd stop getting in the way of me saving Nico."Adrian swayed sharply. He stared at me, his voice trembling with a hint of humility and pleading that even he didn't seem to realize was there."Maybel... you're lying. We depended on each other for months. Are you telling me there wasn't even one moment when you had feelings for me?""No," I answered without the slightest hesitation.I looked at him and said seriously, "Mr. Whitaker, you've always been above everyone else. You're used to having people revolve around you, and you're used to measuring everything in terms of power and personal gain."You think becoming Mrs. Whitaker is som

Maybel's POVThe sea breeze carried a faint trace of salt through Seabrook, and the sun had baked the stone-paved streets hot.I had opened a seafood restaurant on the busiest corner in town. With the savings we'd built up over years of working, we'd taken over a two-story storefront with a large yard, and life couldn't have been better.Nico's injuries had mostly healed. He'd worked in security before, so he was strong. These days, when he wasn't helping me haul seafood or fix things around the restaurant, he was constantly finding new ways to make me something delicious."Honey, take a break. Try the vanilla custard I just made."Nico came out of the kitchen carrying a white ceramic bowl. He was dressed simply in a white T-shirt today, tall and broad-shouldered. There was still a faint scar at the corner of his mouth, but if anything, it only made him look more rugged.I was sitting behind the register punching numbers into a calculator. The moment I heard him, I leaned toward

Third-Person POV"Where is she?! Where is Maybel?!" Adrian roared, completely losing control as he kicked over a nearby shelf. The bodyguards lowered their heads in fear, and the entire estate was immediately searched from top to bottom.Nothing.She was nowhere to be found.Adrian's eyes were bloodshot. Suddenly, something occurred to him, and he grabbed Caleb by the collar. "Find out who that relative she got out with the letter really is!"Less than an hour later, Caleb returned drenched in sweat, the back of his shirt soaked through. "M-Mr. Whitaker, we found out. The person Ms. Dawson got out wasn't her brother..."It was Nico Reynolds, the department manager at one of the Group's subsidiaries who was arrested over financial irregularities."Caleb swallowed hard before trembling out the words that sent Adrian plunging into an icy abyss, "And Nico Reynolds and Ms. Dawson aren't brother and sister..."Adrian abruptly shoved Caleb aside and snatched up the employee file on t
