Chapter 2

Author: Eirlys
Before burning the bridge entirely, I had a final tie to sever.

I dialed Nikolai’s private line.

"What? Not even twenty-four hours and you’re already calling to beg for a truce?" His voice was thick with greasy confidence.

"I have something that belongs to you." Between my fingers sat a small velvet case holding the mangled hollow-point slug dug out of Nikolai’s ribs when he jumped in front of a gun for me at age twelve. He’d kept it like a talisman, proof that my life belonged to him. "Give me your location."

"Fifth Ave boutique. Make it quick, I’m not waiting around for you." The line went dead.

When I pushed through the glass doors of the luxury showroom, Nikolai was sprawled deep into an Italian leather armchair.

Gia stood in front of the triptych mirrors, smoothing down a tailored Chanel suit fresh off the Paris runway.

"Nikolai, what do you think? Matteo mentioned I might start shadowing him at the firm next week. Does this scream boardroom?"

"Looks stunning. Like you were born into the elite," Nikolai murmured, his tone nauseatingly gentle. But the second his gaze flicked to me, his features curdled into stone. "Where’s the package? What was so damn urgent you had to disrupt us?"

I extended the velvet box.

He didn't bother to glance inside. With a dismissive flick of his wrist, he tossed it behind him to an armed bodyguard. "Whatever. Since you crawled all the way out here, give Gia a hand picking evening wear."

"Can’t. I have packing to finish," I replied, deadpan.

Nikolai let out a mocking bark of laughter, his eyes dragging over my tailored combat slacks. "Packing? Still running that pathetic tough-girl routine? Not like you know shit about dresses anyway. You haven't touched silk since we were kids. Always stomping around like an armed thug. No grace, no femininity. Your street taste would just ruin Gia’s look."

He whipped out a black Amex from his coat and dropped it into Gia’s manicured palm. "Get whatever catches your eye. Put the whole store on my tab."

Gia beamed, leaning in close. "Thank you, Nikolai. You take such good care of me."

A cold, dull ache settled deep into my ribs.

When I was twelve, shrapnel from a car bomb shredded my right calf, carving a jagged, hideous scar that ruined the skin. I swore off dresses out of humiliation.

Back then, a bruised and hysterical Nikolai had emptied out half of Manhattan’s designer floors, dumping piles of custom-tailored slacks onto my hospital mattress.

What had the boy said to me through his tears?

"You look like a goddamn queen no matter what you wear, Sienna. If anyone opens their mouth about your legs, I’ll put a hollow-point through their teeth."

Memories were just rusted shrapnel. They only bled you if you kept digging at them.

I turned on my heel and walked out the door.

That night, the electronic lock on my penthouse buzzed.

Matteo walked inside carrying paper grocery bags, rolling up his cuffs and making himself at home in my kitchen as if the past twenty-four hours hadn't happened.

Half an hour later, two cuts of prime ribeye sat on the counter. Seared black, medium-rare inside, cracked peppercorn crust. Just the way I liked it.

"Sit and eat," he murmured, pulling out my chair with a soft look in his eyes, acting as though yesterday's venom had never existed. "I was out of line yesterday. We only push you because Gia took the brunt of the gutter for eighteen years. We feel responsible for her, that's all."

He leaned across the wood, pressing his warm palm over the back of my cold hand. "I gave you my word. This last month before you head out, I’m yours. A real boyfriend."

I stared down at our overlapping fingers, a hollow twitch pulling at my muscle.

For one pathetic, fleeting second, I almost thought there was a thread of real remorse in him. I almost opened my mouth to tell him my jet took off in two days.

Then he cleared his throat.

"One more thing... pass me the keycard to the Park Avenue penthouse."

My steak knife stopped scraping the porcelain. "That’s our fallback safehouse. Ours."

"I know," Matteo said, casual as hell, like he was asking to borrow a lighter. "It sits two blocks from the firm. Gia starts Monday. It’s safer for her, and she won't have to fight traffic."

The last tiny, microscopic ember in my chest went completely black.

The steak, the soft voice, the fake apology. A staged performance.

All of it just to clear a room for Gia.

I didn't yell. I didn't shatter the wine glass.

I reached into my pocket, slid the sleek black keycard out, and laid it quietly next to his steak knife.

Matteo blinked, clearly thrown off. He had anticipated a shouting match, not absolute compliance.

He scooped the card up, slipping it into his pocket with a smug, satisfied grin. "Look at you. Glad to see you're finally acting your age, Sienna."

I watched his silhouette disappear down the private elevator. The second the heavy steel doors latched shut, I picked up my phone and dialed my asset manager.

"The penthouse on Park. Dump it. Twenty percent under market value, cash only. I want the title out of my name by tomorrow afternoon."

The deed was stamped with my name alone. The down payment had come from the bounty of my very first syndicate hit.

I wouldn't leave them a single square inch of dirt.

The grand ballroom on the top floor of the Empire State Building was the beating heart of the underworld tonight. The old Don was stepping down, and I was taking the seat—crowned as the undisputed head of the Hughes syndicate. When I stepped onto the elevated marble dais, hundreds of mob bosses, cartel capos, and kingmakers rose to their feet in dead silence, followed by thunderous, room-shaking applause.Out of the corner of my eye, I caught three figures slumped at the lowest, darkest table in the back corner.Wrecks of men.Five years forged me into an absolute sovereign; five years reduced them to hollow, walking corpses. My intelligence network had laid out their files on my desk days before my jet took off:Matteo had driven his family’s enterprise into the dirt. Don Bryant, disgusted by his son's pathetic state, brought an illegitimate heir back from Europe and handed him the keys to the kingdom. Matteo was an heir in name only, a laughingstock across the boroughs.Nikolai’s tem

(Sienna’s POV)One year in Vegas.I paved my path in bone and brass, turning the chaotic desert playground into a fortress under my absolute rule.By the time the last rebel boss hit the warehouse floor with a hole between his eyes, the first red light of dawn was cutting across the desert sand.My second-in-command walked through the clearing smoke, dropping to one knee as he offered a thin, lit cigar. "Boss. Nevada’s cash routes and black markets are locked down. The territory is yours."Behind him, hundreds of armed soldiers raised their rifles in a deafening, unified salute.Back in my high-rise office, my mother’s face flickered onto the encrypted screen. She looked as unyielding as ever, but there was a sharp, unmistakable respect burning in her gaze. After I rattled off the quarter’s profit margins and supply line expansions, she took a slow sip of wine and remarked, almost casually:"Matteo lost his mind a while back. Tried to jump on a private bird to Vegas to track you down.

When Don Hughes heard the tapes, there was no fatherly outrage. Only cold, clinical disgust. In an empire forged through discipline and blood, this brand of cheap internal sabotage was a cancer."Erase the Hughes name from her records. Ship her to the border compounds in Eastern Europe," the Don ordered, waving his hand as if swatting away a fly. "If she ever steps foot back on American soil, put a round through her skull."No matter how loudly Gia shrieked, clawing at the mahogany doorframe until her manicured nails ripped and bled onto the floor, two enforcers dragged her out into the torrential rain like roadkill. She was eradicated. But the poison was already deep in our veins.I went out of my mind, flooring the pedal toward the Bryant private airfield, demanding a pilot prep a jet for Nevada."Tackle the idiot! Pin him down!"My father arrived with a dozen heavies, driving me hard into the wet runway before I could make the hangar steps."You're the heir to this syndicate! The fa

The rain outside came down like sheets of lead.I sat on a rusty folding chair in the basement cell of the docks, my knuckles raw and split, the air thick with the smell of iron and dirty water. On the concrete floor, the three socialites who cornered Sienna were soaked to the bone, trembling like cornered rats."Who told you that you could lay a hand on my girl?" My voice was shot, dragging a solid iron pipe across the wet floor with a high-pitched screech."It was Gia! It was all her!" the lead girl shrieked, slamming her forehead repeatedly against the concrete. "Gia dropped it in our private chat! She told us Sienna was stripped of her rank, that the family was tossing her in the desert to get slaughtered! She swore if we taught Sienna a lesson, she’d cut us into the Hughes supply lines once she took the seat!"The basement went tomb-silent.A sickening crack split the air.The wet snap of bone was drowned out by an ear-splitting scream. I dropped the pipe, pulled a clean linen han

The wind off the Vegas tarmac tasted of dry dust, heat, and spent brass. The second my boots hit the ground, I dove headfirst into an all-out purge, carving out the syndicate rot with a machete. Two thousand miles away, inside the Park Avenue penthouse, the bass was vibrating through the floorboards.(Matteo’s POV)The welcome party to celebrate Gia joining the firm was in full swing. Top-shelf champagne was flowing like water, but I couldn't stop burning a hole through my phone screen.Nothing.Four full hours since Gia’s little victory post went live.Normally, if any female came within spitting distance of our circle, Sienna would have kicked the mahogany door off its hinges within ten minutes, demanding blood. She guarded our perimeter like a feral hound.Tonight, there was only dead air.A sudden, icy knot twisted inside my gut. I punched her number into the keypad and hit call."The number you have reached has been disconnected or is no longer in service."The robotic voice felt

Two hours later, a reinforced black Cadillac sat idling silently at the iron gates of the Hughes main estate.I wore a dark tactical trench coat, a strip of surgical tape covering the dried gash on my throat.Inside the sprawling library, the heads of the family—the Don and Donna of the Hughes syndicate—sat behind a massive slab of antique mahogany.Between them lay the signed, stamped deployment order for the Nevada territory. My father’s pitch-black eyes bore into me. "Vegas is a meat grinder, Sienna. The cartels and the strip syndicates don't honor blood agreements. You step out onto that tarmac, you fight for your own life."My mother didn't offer a shred of maternal comfort; she only calculated cold value. "A Hughes never crawls. Blood gets you through the front door, nothing more. The throne goes to whoever takes it with lead and grit. You asked for the desert. Bring back blood, or don't come back at all."To people like them, petty squabbling between daughters was pathetic noise
