Chapter 1

The brass lock gave a sharp, metallic click.

The room went dead.

Matteo froze, his crystal tumbler hovering inches from his lips, that smug half-smile trapped on his mouth. Nikolai’s eyebrow hitched up with habitual arrogance. Julian pushed his wire-rimmed glasses up the bridge of his nose, the nervous twitch in his eyes giving him away instantly.

Only Gia scrambled, shrinking behind Matteo like a cornered fawn, squeezing real tears into her doe eyes.

"Sienna..." Matteo broke the silence first, putting his bourbon down with practiced ease. "How much of that did you catch?"

"‘Wrapped around your little finger with one kiss’?" I parroted, keeping my voice stripped of every drop of emotion. "That your idea of a confession, Matteo?"

Matteo took a second, his mouth twisting. "Hey, fair is fair. I never said I picked Truth."

My brain short-circuited.

A dare. The entire goddamn thing was a dare.

I was a complete clown. Twenty years of sharing blood, mud, and family wars, washed down the drain as the punchline to an inside joke.

The sheer absurdity of it ripped a laugh right out of my throat—jagged, raw, and completely unhinged.

"Watch the attitude, Sienna," Nikolai snarled, hauling himself up from the leather sofa, his jaw clenched tight. "Matteo didn't do shit wrong. The Hughes family needed an enforcer to clear out the scum in Vegas. Gia spent eighteen years rotting in the slums. She’s delicate. You honestly expect her to march into the slaughterhouse?"

"So the three of you set me up like a lamb?" I locked eyes with him.

"We bet on what pays out best. That's business," Julian cut in, his tone devoid of warmth. "The four families are bound by treaties. You’re built for the dirt, Sienna. You take a hit, you hit back twice as hard. Gia carries the bloodline. You got eighteen years of her life. You owe the girl."

"I owe her?" A ragged chuckle tore through my teeth. "Did I swap the damn cribs? Did you assholes develop amnesia about the ambushes, the kidnappings, and the lead I took to keep our heads above water?"

"Enough of the sob story!" Nikolai snapped, disgust rolling off him in waves. "Quit playing the damn victim! Gia already told us how you act behind closed doors—freezing her out, treating her like dirt under your boots. A trip to the desert will pull your head out of your ass. Stop barking like a rabid stray fighting for scrap meat!"

So that was the price tag.

Eighteen years of bleeding together didn't balance against three months of designer tears from the long-lost daughter.

I shifted my focus to Matteo. He had remained stone-still. "You stand behind that?"

He stood up, towering over me, casting that familiar, suffocating shadow as he stared down with arrogant pity.

"Vegas is the cleanest exit for your pride. As for the rest of it—until you leave next month, I’ll play the part. I'll be the boyfriend you want." His hand lifted, reaching out to cup my jaw. "Think of it as my way of squaring the debt."

I took a sharp step back, letting his hand drop through empty air. My gut twisted with sheer disgust.

"Sienna, please don't be mad at Matteo, it’s all on me..." Gia whimpered, stepping out from behind him, letting a tear roll down her cheek. "The other night when you passed out drunk, he carried you to bed himself. He stayed until morning, wiping your face and holding your hair... He really cares about you. If having me here makes you hate him, I’ll pack my bags. Don't tear your family apart over me..."

Her words sounded tiny and fragile, but the cold glitter in her eyes was pure, venomous triumph.

Cheap pity. I would rather choke on glass.

I looked down at the platinum band on my right hand, carved deep with the crest of a striking black eagle.

Matteo had forced it onto my finger when we were ten years old, in the aftermath of our first joint kill during cartel training. He swore it bound us in blood. No secrets, no treason.

Under their dead-eyed stares, I gripped the metal, wrenched it off my finger, and flicked my wrist.

The heavy metal smacked the hardwood, skittering across the floor and smacking against the tip of Gia’s designer heels.

"You want my place that bad? Keep the scrap metal too."

I spun toward the exit, my palm slapping flat against the brass latch.

"You’re going to choke on your pride, Sienna!" Nikolai’s harsh bark echoed behind me. "Just like every other goddamn time! You always come crawling back on your knees begging us to forgive you!"

I slammed the heavy mahogany door shut behind me, the sound echoing like a gunshot through the hallway.

I used to crawl back because I gave a damn about the ghosts of our past. I thought we were bound together.

Not anymore.

The draft in the corridor tore against my cheeks, freezing out the very last ember in my chest.

My coat pocket buzzed.

A secure encrypted ping from the family Elders flashed across the screen:

[Sienna, your deployment order to take command of the Las Vegas syndicate is finalized. Family protocol permits a thirty-day transition window. Confirm acceptance.]

I stopped mid-stride under the flickering sconce, my thumb hitting the glass without a millisecond of doubt:

[Confirmed. Skip the thirty days.]

[I wheels-up in forty-eight hours.]

The grand ballroom on the top floor of the Empire State Building was the beating heart of the underworld tonight. The old Don was stepping down, and I was taking the seat—crowned as the undisputed head of the Hughes syndicate. When I stepped onto the elevated marble dais, hundreds of mob bosses, cartel capos, and kingmakers rose to their feet in dead silence, followed by thunderous, room-shaking applause.Out of the corner of my eye, I caught three figures slumped at the lowest, darkest table in the back corner.Wrecks of men.Five years forged me into an absolute sovereign; five years reduced them to hollow, walking corpses. My intelligence network had laid out their files on my desk days before my jet took off:Matteo had driven his family’s enterprise into the dirt. Don Bryant, disgusted by his son's pathetic state, brought an illegitimate heir back from Europe and handed him the keys to the kingdom. Matteo was an heir in name only, a laughingstock across the boroughs.Nikolai’s tem

(Sienna’s POV)One year in Vegas.I paved my path in bone and brass, turning the chaotic desert playground into a fortress under my absolute rule.By the time the last rebel boss hit the warehouse floor with a hole between his eyes, the first red light of dawn was cutting across the desert sand.My second-in-command walked through the clearing smoke, dropping to one knee as he offered a thin, lit cigar. "Boss. Nevada’s cash routes and black markets are locked down. The territory is yours."Behind him, hundreds of armed soldiers raised their rifles in a deafening, unified salute.Back in my high-rise office, my mother’s face flickered onto the encrypted screen. She looked as unyielding as ever, but there was a sharp, unmistakable respect burning in her gaze. After I rattled off the quarter’s profit margins and supply line expansions, she took a slow sip of wine and remarked, almost casually:"Matteo lost his mind a while back. Tried to jump on a private bird to Vegas to track you down.

When Don Hughes heard the tapes, there was no fatherly outrage. Only cold, clinical disgust. In an empire forged through discipline and blood, this brand of cheap internal sabotage was a cancer."Erase the Hughes name from her records. Ship her to the border compounds in Eastern Europe," the Don ordered, waving his hand as if swatting away a fly. "If she ever steps foot back on American soil, put a round through her skull."No matter how loudly Gia shrieked, clawing at the mahogany doorframe until her manicured nails ripped and bled onto the floor, two enforcers dragged her out into the torrential rain like roadkill. She was eradicated. But the poison was already deep in our veins.I went out of my mind, flooring the pedal toward the Bryant private airfield, demanding a pilot prep a jet for Nevada."Tackle the idiot! Pin him down!"My father arrived with a dozen heavies, driving me hard into the wet runway before I could make the hangar steps."You're the heir to this syndicate! The fa

The rain outside came down like sheets of lead.I sat on a rusty folding chair in the basement cell of the docks, my knuckles raw and split, the air thick with the smell of iron and dirty water. On the concrete floor, the three socialites who cornered Sienna were soaked to the bone, trembling like cornered rats."Who told you that you could lay a hand on my girl?" My voice was shot, dragging a solid iron pipe across the wet floor with a high-pitched screech."It was Gia! It was all her!" the lead girl shrieked, slamming her forehead repeatedly against the concrete. "Gia dropped it in our private chat! She told us Sienna was stripped of her rank, that the family was tossing her in the desert to get slaughtered! She swore if we taught Sienna a lesson, she’d cut us into the Hughes supply lines once she took the seat!"The basement went tomb-silent.A sickening crack split the air.The wet snap of bone was drowned out by an ear-splitting scream. I dropped the pipe, pulled a clean linen han

The wind off the Vegas tarmac tasted of dry dust, heat, and spent brass. The second my boots hit the ground, I dove headfirst into an all-out purge, carving out the syndicate rot with a machete. Two thousand miles away, inside the Park Avenue penthouse, the bass was vibrating through the floorboards.(Matteo’s POV)The welcome party to celebrate Gia joining the firm was in full swing. Top-shelf champagne was flowing like water, but I couldn't stop burning a hole through my phone screen.Nothing.Four full hours since Gia’s little victory post went live.Normally, if any female came within spitting distance of our circle, Sienna would have kicked the mahogany door off its hinges within ten minutes, demanding blood. She guarded our perimeter like a feral hound.Tonight, there was only dead air.A sudden, icy knot twisted inside my gut. I punched her number into the keypad and hit call."The number you have reached has been disconnected or is no longer in service."The robotic voice felt

Two hours later, a reinforced black Cadillac sat idling silently at the iron gates of the Hughes main estate.I wore a dark tactical trench coat, a strip of surgical tape covering the dried gash on my throat.Inside the sprawling library, the heads of the family—the Don and Donna of the Hughes syndicate—sat behind a massive slab of antique mahogany.Between them lay the signed, stamped deployment order for the Nevada territory. My father’s pitch-black eyes bore into me. "Vegas is a meat grinder, Sienna. The cartels and the strip syndicates don't honor blood agreements. You step out onto that tarmac, you fight for your own life."My mother didn't offer a shred of maternal comfort; she only calculated cold value. "A Hughes never crawls. Blood gets you through the front door, nothing more. The throne goes to whoever takes it with lead and grit. You asked for the desert. Bring back blood, or don't come back at all."To people like them, petty squabbling between daughters was pathetic noise
