Eileen's POV
"I promise you, for a while," I finally said.
Arthur and Brett hugged me tightly, and I could feel their shoulders relax, before they left with the warrior. I was informed to finish breakfast with Amber and join them after.
At the breakfast table, Amber still ate independently without my help. The unease in my heart eased again. I ate silently, but the sweet mate scent still lingered in the air. When they embraced me, my heart had actually anticipated more - kisses, hugs, even further...
Thinking that, I couldn't help clenching my thighs together, my face heating up.
"Mom, are you hot?" Amber asked in confusion.
"No! Sweetheart, I..." I flustered, when Alex suddenly appeared.
"Elleen! Are you two done?" Alex's timely arrival saved me from the awkwardness. Seeing Amber's empty plate, I nodded.
Alex nodded back, then led us to the burial site.
It was a private ceremony with only a few attending.
I kept watching the triplets' two brothers, seeing their stoic faces refusing to cry, standing strong. We paid our final respects and farewells as they lowered their late Alpha into the grave.
I watched the triplets' rigid backs, their shoulders shaking as they struggled to hold back grief, a weight pressing on my chest too.
"Mom?" Amber's small voice pulled me from my thoughts, looking at her. I noticed she spoke more lately, knowing my little girl was progressing well, growing up beautifully always made me smile.
"Yes, dear?" I smiled at her, and she blinked.
"What happens when people die?" she asked, surprising me. Who knew her vocabulary was so advanced? I knew she was observant, she must be smart to pick up on how adults speak.
I took a deep breath, thinking how to explain without scaring her. "Well, they go to a good place," I hesitated, and she frowned in confusion.
"A good place?" she mumbled, and I nodded.
"Yes, Alpha Joseph went to a good place. One day, we'll all go there too," I said, watching her eyes widen in fear. I pulled her close, hugging her.
"Don't worry dear, death isn't scary. What's scarier is being forgotten. As long as your loved ones aren't forgotten, death isn't so scary," I said softly, and she nodded. I didn't know if it made sense, but that was how I felt. In that moment, I knew my perspective on loss and death had profoundly shifted.
As the ceremony ended and we were to head back, suddenly I saw Alex hurrying towards me.
"Elleen, you need to get Amber home quickly," he said gravely.
"Is everything alright?" I asked him, and he shook his head.
"Not good, we received an alert that rogues are crossing the borders. I'm certain they got word of Alpha Joseph's passing. They see this as our most vulnerable time, so they're launching an attack."
An attack...the shameless rogues! How dare they attack when Alpha Joseph just passed! My heart burned with anger too.
"Actually Alex, I can help. You know I'm not weak," I said, knowing I hadn't decided if I would stay with the Black Woods, but...I felt deeply for the pack.
Alex's eyes widened in surprise, but he was quick to refuse sternly. "Elleen, you are strong. If not for that incident, you would have replaced me as the first female Beta of Black Woods. But...the fact is, this attack has even graver circumstances. I believe Arthur and Brett wouldn't want you in harm's way, and neither do I."
"What exactly is happening?" I pressed.
Alex finally sighed. "Our gamma informed us that this rogue attack is extremely large-scale - they are not only attacking our pack, but also..."
"But also what?!" I demanded angrily.
"The Stone Heart pack is also under attack!" Alex finally told me.
I shook my head - I no longer had ties to the Stone Hearts, though I was good friends with Beta Silas and respected by others in the pack. I believed the Stone Heart warriors, trained by me, were fully capable of fending off low-level rogues.
I meant to leave, but Alex's next words froze my blood.
"Alpha Jason has issued a warrant to all packs - he will stop at nothing to find you. We're worried they'll take this chaos as a chance to take you back."
Arthur's POV
"Report, what's the situation over there?" Just as father was laid to rest, the rogues began attacking our pack. What enraged me more was that bastard Alpha Jason was trying to take Elleen from me again.
Never! I won't allow it! I immediately lunged, sinking my claws into one rogue's throat, but they were stronger than the last rogues I killed - their bodies like reinforced bronze and iron. When the rogue noticed my stare, he flashed an evil grin.
"Watch out Arthur!" Brett joined in, pulling me away before the rogue's venom could seep into my heart. Alex was battling another rogue, and I noticed he was indeed struggling.
These rogues seemed unkillable...Brett and I tried reaching Alex, but the rogues sensed our plan, more suddenly descending from above to block our path.
My heart raced as I saw Alex's arm injured, him flung to the ground, the venomous rogue claws stabbing towards his heart. "Look out Alex!" I roared.
Just as I thought Alex would be killed, a white wolf barged in, pinning the rogue down. Her fur sleek and pristine, I caught a mate's scent on her!
Was the white wolf Elleen?! As I gaped, the white wolf instantly plunged her claws into the rogue wolf's heart!
The rogue swiftly died, the white wolf letting out a howl before collapsing -
I tried calling out to her, but she and her wolf form were unresponsive. No, I couldn't lose my mate!
Eileen's POVIt was her, Selene. But not as I had seen her before in visions. This was the grown version of the little girl I had seen in X’s memory—the one he had played with in the field. Her presence stilled the air. Even the winds quieted. Her silver-white hair floated around her face as if touched by unseen winds, and her eyes—those soft, ancient eyes—were filled with sorrow. The moon goddess herself was here. She didn’t speak to us. She walked straight to X.He looked up at her, his lips trembling. His hands, bloodied and broken, reached out but then he withdrew, as if remembering all what he had gone through. She knelt. Right there, in the dust and blood, the Moon goddess knelt beside her brother, not with judgment, but with love. Her fingers brushed his face gently, her voice soft like moonlight through trees. "Arion" her voice was smooth, calm and as gentle as the breeze. I saw a shift of emotions on his face
Eileen's POVHis eyes were still glowing from the energy he'd used to end Jason, and when he turned to me, something in my chest tightened. There was death all around us, the scent of burnt flesh, Jason's broken body lying lifeless on the floor. But the true danger was the man still standing. X. The Dark Lord. My so-called fated mate. My captor. He stepped toward me with deliberate slowness, the same way a predator might approach wounded prey. My legs wouldn't move. My mind screamed at me to run, but my body refused to listen. His tall frame cast a shadow over me, and when he finally stopped just a breath away, I could feel the power radiating off him. It was oppressive, thick like fog, seeping into my lungs and wrapping around my heart. He reached out and brushed his fingers against my face. I flinched, but he didn’t stop. His touch was surprisingly gentle, but that only made it more terrifying. "Don't be scared," he whispered, his voice almost soothing i
Eileen's POVMy heart clenched at the news. Lina… gone. A part of me had hated her, but this? This was monstrous.“You killed her,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “You absorbed her power.” A part of me was tempted by this. I wanted to put an end to what the dark lord was doing, but Jason? He was the last person I could trustJason didn’t even flinch. “It made me strong enough to challenge him.”“You’re just as much a monster as he is!” I hissed. His face hardened. “That’s not true.”“You think I’ll trust you after everything you’ve done? After the lies? The manipulation? You handed me over to him like a damn gift! And now what? You want to kill him and take his place?”Jason’s face contorted with rage. “I did it for us! For me and you! We could’ve ruled together. We still can! I regret letting him have you,
Eileen's POVFrom that day, he changed. He stopped trying to get their attention. He gave up on family, on affection. And most of all, he gave up on her. If she was going to be the goddess, then fine. Let her shine. He would become her shadow."While she trained with our father, I was cast aside. They thought I was nothing," he said, rising to his feet, his voice nos cold. . "But I had power. Deep, raw power they never noticed. I fed it with every rejection, every slap, every moment of loneliness."He began to learn in secret. Magic. Control. Darkness."And I watched. Oh, I watched," he said, stepping closer to me. "I saw her become the Moon Goddess, beloved by all. While I rotted in the shadows. Forgotten."My chest was tight. My heart thudded painfully as I looked at him. There was grief in his voice, heartbreak that spanned lifetimes. This wasn't just a villain. He was a boy who had been broken so thoroughly, so cruelly, that he had remade himself into a monster. The room was silen
Eileen's POVFlashback continues.."What's going on here"Still dazed, barely conscious, he turned his head to the side. Through blurred vision, he saw his father charging through the grass—but not toward him. No. His father dropped to his knees beside his sister, scooping her up as if she were made of glass. There wasn’t even a glance in his direction."Oh heavens, Selene!" His father panicked and carried her out of there. He was too worried about her to even angry at him.He remembered the chill that went down his spine. The realization. He wasn’t the one they were worried about. He tried to call out. A whisper. Nothing came.Minutes passed—long, heavy, silent minutes—and he thought he might die right there. And maybe no one would notice. Leaving him to die seemed like something his father would happily do.Eventually, someone came. A servant. Eyes wide, trembling hands. She gasped when she saw him, bloodied and bent. She carried him back, whispering apologies, as if she knew it was
Eileen's POVI couldn’t move.My heart thudded so loudly in my chest it felt like it might burst through my ribs. My palms were damp, my breath shallow. There he was, the Dark Lord, sitting just a few feet away from me like some ancient nightmare made real. I had heard so many stories about him. And now, I was in the same room with him. I couldn't believe this.He looked... calm. Almost too calm. His dark robes hung loosely around him, the deep fabric barely moving as he stepped closer. The air seemed to chill around him, but it wasn’t just cold, it was power. It wrapped around him like a second skin."Y.. you're him" I squeaked out in shock and he chuckled, making me shiver involuntarily."And you are surprised?" He seemed to be teasing me.“What do you want from me?” I asked, barely recognizing the sound of my own voice. It was smaller than I expected, shaken, almost like a child's.He didn’t respond right away. Instead, he tilted his head slightly, eyes, those sharp, knowing eyes,
