Chapter 4

Author: Spellman
Amber asked, "Eight sisters? You think your sisters are your private superhero squad or something?"

Mindy looked just as smug and contemptuous, her tone downright condescending. "Everyone knows your adoptive family is just a bunch of low-class nobodies. They're already dirt-poor, and you're saying you have eight sisters?"

Amber let out a disdainful snort, looking at me like I was dirt. "They're probably just a bunch of delinquents who spend their days causing trouble.

"You actually have the nerve to brag about bottom-feeding trash like that? Have you no shame? You're an absolute disgrace to the Decker family!"

Arthur held my hand tightly, shaking with anger.

As I stared at the three self-important morons, an angry laugh escaped me.

Arthur looked at me with a pained expression, his brow drawn tightly together.

Donna seemed to have run out of steam right then. She waved her hand impatiently, putting an end to the whole farce. "That's enough. All of you, stop arguing."

She shot me a glare, her tone utterly patronizing as she said, "Since Arthur's sticking up for you, I'll let you off this time. I can't be bothered to argue with an unruly punk like you."

She went right back to acting like the untouchable head of the family and said, "There's going to be a business gala in a few days. Make yourself presentable and come along.

"It'd be good for you to see how the real world works. Keep your mouth shut and don't speak unless spoken to when you're there. You'd better not embarrass the Decker family!"

With that, Donna turned on her heel and headed downstairs. Mindy shot me a disdainful look before sidling up to Arthur to suck up to him.

"Don't be mad, Arthur. Getting yourself worked up over this isn't worth it. How about I have that designer you love make you a custom suit for the gala?

"But you can't act like you did today. You and I are supposed to be on the same side. If you keep taking this country bumpkin's side, I'm going to be upset."

Arthur didn't even spare her a glance. With a cold expression, he dragged me straight to my room. The door slammed shut behind us with a loud bang.

I sat on the edge of the bed, and the more I thought about it, the more pissed off I got. Once we were at the gala, I was absolutely going to have my sisters end this engagement once and for all.

I wanted to make sure that idiot Mindy was sent packing as far away as possible.

The day of the gala came in a flash. I put on the cream-colored suit Arthur had specially picked out for me.

The second I stepped into the dazzling ballroom, I started looking around, trying to spot Arthur. Amber, who had been trailing right behind me, suddenly stuck her foot out.

She then waited for the perfect moment to slam right into my lower back. Caught off guard, I lost my balance in an instant and lurched forward.

In a panic, I flailed my hands around, desperately trying to grab at whatever I could.

My fingers just happened to catch the wrist of the woman in front of me. A snap echoed in the ballroom, and the strap of the limited-edition watch on her wrist snapped clean off.

The diamond-encrusted watch flew through the air in an arc before falling hard against the polished marble floor. It then skidded a long way across it.

The room went dead silent in an instant.

Amber instantly slapped on an apologetic look. "Oh, I am so sorry. He's my younger brother. We just brought him back from the countryside.

"I see that he has ruined your multi-million-dollar custom watch, but I promise I will make sure he is held fully accountable! I'm going to teach him a lesson he'll never forget as a way to make it up to you!"

Since I had hit the floor hard, my knees were still throbbing from the impact. When I heard Amber spew that nonsense and twist the facts, I was so mad that I was about to get up and give her a piece of my mind.

Suddenly, a hand appeared in front of me, and with a gentle tug, the person pulled me right back onto my feet.

I brushed the dust off my suit before looking up in anger. The next second, I found myself staring straight into a pair of familiar, mesmerizing eyes.

The woman was dressed in a perfectly tailored black evening gown. But right now, her usually gentle face was frighteningly dark.

"Who exactly are you trying to punish? You want to punish the heir to the Moore family?"

It was my oldest sister, Catherine Moore.

I sat up and climbed out of bed to grab an envelope from the nightstand drawer. I then got into bed again and set it down in front of him."Take a look at this."Arthur gave me a confused look, then opened it.The first page was an acceptance letter from the Peckons School of Arts with his name on it. Tucked behind it was a black bank card with gold trim. The balance on it was 20 million dollars.Arthur stared at the documents for a very long time. He gently traced a finger over the acceptance letter, then touched his own face in the visa photo. He snapped his head up to look at me. Tears started falling onto the acceptance letter, blurring the words "Peckons School of Arts"."Jake, when did you…""I've been planning for you to study abroad for a long time now. I had Catherine help get it sorted. I was going to surprise you, but after what Dad said tonight, I figured I couldn't put it off any longer."I pressed the bank card into his hand. "Consider this 20 million dollars and

I walked over to Arthur and crouched down in front of him, giving him a tissue to wipe his tears with. "Hey, don't cry. This is a good thing. Why the tears?"He let out a laugh through his tears. He gave my hand a hard squeeze, then nodded firmly in agreement. That night, Mom made a massive feast for dinner.During the meal, she kept piling food onto Arthur's plate, telling him he needed to eat more if he wanted to look healthy. Then she praised his hands, saying they were made to draw.I noticed that the second she said the word "draw", Arthur's hand paused. With his head low, he shoveled a couple of bites of meat into his mouth without saying a word. After dinner, I went to the kitchen to help with the dishes. Through the sliding door, I could hear Dad pulling Arthur aside to talk in the living room.I strained to hear and caught Dad speaking in a gentle and warm voice. "Arthur, there's something I want to talk to you about. You know, Catherine might be a good match for you.

Arthur was sitting in a wicker chair, flipping through a fashion design catalog. The sunlight was catching on his eyelashes, making him look as dreamy as a watercolor painting.I glanced at him, then told Gordon to let her in.When Donna walked in, Catherine was the only one downstairs. She was sitting on the living room couch, going over some documents. She didn't even bother to look up.With an awkward smile, Donna set the bottles of wine on the coffee table and said, "Hello, Ms. Moore."Catherine simply turned a page and ignored her. The awkward look on Donna's face was impossible to miss. She cleared her throat and turned to me when I walked in. She then forced a smile on her face. "Oh, Jake, I came today because I wanted to talk to you about something important."She pulled a stack of documents from her briefcase and spread them across the coffee table. There was a DNA test report, along with Decker Group's financial statements. She laid everything out neatly, treating this

I told Arthur, "From now on, you're staying in the Moore residence. No one gets to force you to do anything ever again."Arthur's tears finally spilled over. He hugged me tightly, his whole body trembling. His voice came out muffled against my shoulder, thick with emotion. "Jake, no one's ever stood up for me like this before."Once he calmed down, I wiped his tears and led him to the couch. After I cleaned the blood off his finger with a wet wipe, I slapped a bandage over the cut before turning to Catherine. "Catherine, do it. I never want to see the Hickman family again."Catherine nodded. "Sure. I've already looked into the Hickman family's finances. There are plenty of cracks to exploit. Three days is all I need to bankrupt them."She then added, "The news about Hickman Group's financial troubles will hit the presses tomorrow morning. I'll assign a couple more bodyguards to Arthur just in case Mindy does something out of desperation."I simply grunted in approval.Dad cam

Mindy leaned over and popped the lid off the gift box after taking it out of the bag. Inside was a limited-edition Patek Philippe men's watch, blindingly flashy under the living room lights."A marriage alliance between the Moore family and the Hickman family would benefit us both," Mindy began. "As for Arthur, I'll make sure he's taken care of. I'll set him up with his own independent design studio. He can live on his own and do whatever he wants. I promise I won't let either of you be mistreated."She put just the slightest emphasis on the words "either of you" before adding, "I get that you two are close. If he ever needs anything in the future, just tell me, and I'll take care of everything."I slowly set down the goblet in my hand. "Aren't you worried Arthur might not be fine with it?"A smile slowly appeared on Mindy's face. She leaned back into the couch, casually crossing her legs. "He's lived with the Decker family for 18 years. He's used to the good life. He'll be thr

Donna added, "Don't worry. I'll take care of everything for you. If the Hickman family has anything to say about it later, I'll go talk to them in person."I almost choked on my own spit. What the hell was going through her head? Did she seriously think I'd been giving Mindy a hard time because I was into her?I couldn't even be bothered to correct her ridiculous assumption. I simply pulled out the agreement Catherine's legal team had prepared beforehand and slid it across the table to Donna."This is the agreement to officially sever Arthur's ties with the Decker family. Once you sign this, whatever Arthur does or whatever happens to him afterward will have nothing to do with the Deckers. You'll have no further obligations toward him, nor will you have any right to meddle in his life."Donna picked up the papers and flipped through them slowly, scrutinizing every single page. Then, without a word, she simply grabbed a pen and signed it.After she was done, she smiled, speaking w
