Chapter 2

Autor: Lynn Green
The others chimed in too.

"I want to study with the great Selene too!"

"Selene, you're too kind. If you tutored outside of school, you could easily charge hundreds an hour."

"There's always someone better out there. Summer, you can finally take a break and focus on yourself."

I watched everyone crowd around Selene and shower her with praise.

My chest ached as if a needle had pricked it, yet at the same time, I felt strangely relieved.

"Sure," I agreed without hesitation.

Maybe it was for the best. For the past two years, I had stayed up until dawn organizing lecture notes, sacrificed my own study time to answer questions, and paid for printed materials out of my own pocket. I was sick of all of it.

I said nothing more, but the class president approached me in private. "Selene's just blunt. Don't take it to heart. Still, everyone wants to raise their scores quickly.

"Why don't you improve your methods? If you can be more efficient than her, we'd still rather study with you. After all, we've got two years of history together."

I laughed. Even a backstab had to sound like they were doing me a favor.

Who they chose to study with was none of my business. I had people of my own who genuinely wanted to learn from me.

"No," I refused without hesitation.

The class president turned around and made an announcement to the class. "From now on, tutoring is Selene's job. Summer, fill Selene in on everyone's academic situation so she can get up to speed.

"Also, let's have Selene take over as study group leader. She's kind enough to tutor everyone for free. It wouldn't be right to leave her without a title."

I had founded that study group and led it for two years, yet a single sentence was all it took to kick me out.

I did not fight for it. I only gave them one word. "Okay."

Denise Austin, the classmate who sat beside me and whom I got along with well, poked me. "Summer, don't be too upset."

The classmates sitting nearby crowded around too.

"Summer, don't take it to heart either. Selene came from a top school in the city. Her methods are bound to be more reliable."

"Yeah, nobody meant to replace you. Everyone just wants to raise their scores quickly. The college entrance exam doesn't leave us any time to waste."

"You've worked hard for the past two years too. You might as well rest now. With Selene leading us, you don't have to bother anymore."

They called it comfort, but every word was a veiled provocation.

Fortunately, none of it bothered me in the slightest.

I put away the half-finished math problem set on my desk and packed up to leave for the day.

Good materials and carefully organized problem sets deserved to go to people who actually valued them.

Denise saw me packing up and asked, "Summer, why are you leaving so early today?"

I answered flatly, "It's just the normal time school lets out, isn't it?"

That left the whole group speechless.

School officially let out at 6:00 p.m. I had commuted from home for the past two years, yet because I tutored the entire class, I had never once gone home on time.

Every day, I stayed behind until 10:00 p.m. to work through problems with them and answer their questions. Then I walked home alone in the dark with only a flashlight to light my way.

On my way home, my phone suddenly buzzed with a friend request. It was from Selene.

Selene: [Summer, it's Selene. Send me the study materials you used to tutor everyone, along with the print shop you usually use. I want to compare prices.]

She added a hugging emoji at the end, as if the two of us were close.

The sheer absurdity of it almost made me laugh.

She had publicly dismissed my tutoring as useless. Now she was demanding every resource I had poured my time and effort into, as if she had every right to them.

At first, I typed out a long paragraph because I wanted to argue back. After a moment's thought, I deleted every word.

In the end, I only sent her links to the materials I usually used.

Not long after, Selene's messages came flooding in.

Selene: [What?! There's this much? I'd have to work through every single problem myself and organize everything. How much time would that waste?]

Selene: [And it's all so expensive. Am I supposed to pay for this myself?]

A moment later, Selene's eyes filled with a tangle of emotions: envy, resentment, and deep, festering hatred.I did not look away. I watched her calmly. She stopped and stared at me. A bitter, venomous smile twisted her lips as she spoke, her voice thick with resentment and fury. "Summer, you're really living it up, aren't you?""It's fine," I said flatly. "Quiet and steady."She let out a scornful laugh. The hatred in her eyes burned even hotter. "Quiet and steady?"You're just like everyone else at Enasteri High School. You all look down on people like me from your high horses."All you people know how to do is bury yourselves in books and think hard work will get you everything. I just wanted an easier path. Is that a crime?"I hate you, Summer! I hate all of you who were born able to get everything through effort!"Why does everything go your way while I end up like this?"Her voice cracked with hysterical resentment. Years of pent-up anger finally burst free all at once.

  • Trusting the Wrong Genius   Chapter 10

I loved this work. I loved watching students who wanted to change their lives, just as I once had, move closer to their dreams step by step with my help.I wanted to share everything I had experienced and learned with as many people as possible. I wanted to show them that where you started did not determine where you ended up, and that hard work never betrayed anyone. As long as you stayed grounded, worked hard, and refused to give up, even an ordinary person could build an extraordinary life.…Time passed quickly. Before I knew it, years had gone by, and I had long since established myself in the education field. The tutoring center continued to grow. Over the years, it helped thousands of students get into their dream colleges and change the course of their lives. My family was happy and secure. My parents were healthy, and we lived comfortably, free from financial worries. My future stretched out before me, bright and full of promise. As for my classmates, they eventually

  • Trusting the Wrong Genius   Chapter 9

My mother no longer had to spend her days scraping by behind the counter of that small stationery shop. She no longer had to rise before dawn or stay up late at night, scraping together profits a few cents at a time. At last, she could set down the burden she had carried for so long and rest comfortably at home.Once in a while, she chatted with the neighbors or went out for a walk. Her days became peaceful and steady.Through my own efforts, I had lifted my family out of poverty and left those years of hardship behind. I had given my parents the stable, secure life they deserved. That had always been the whole point of everything I had worked for.…After the new semester began, I officially joined my senior's tutoring center as both a partner and a full-time teacher. The center had always enjoyed a strong reputation. Most of its students came from ordinary families. They had weak academic foundations and hoped to change the course of their lives through hard work.I contri

The classmates who had once mocked me for being "too slow" and "holding them back" now sat there with ashen faces and hollow eyes.Even Denise, my deskmate, who had once told me not to be upset because Selene offered them a better future, had only scored high enough to get into an ordinary community college in some remote area.It was a world away from the university she had once dreamed of attending. As they stared at their scores, every one of them thought of me, whether they meant to or not. They remembered how I had tutored them for free, day after day, for two years. I had stayed up late organizing lecture notes, paid out of my own pocket to print study materials, and patiently broken down every difficult concept for them. They remembered how coldly they had pushed me out, how eagerly they had chosen a cheater like Selene, and how they had mocked both my hard work and everything I had done for them.Regret washed over them like a rising tide. Sadly, no amount of regret could

  • Trusting the Wrong Genius   Chapter 7

With nowhere else to turn, Selene transferred to our school. She knew she had no real ability of her own, so she relied on her father's connections to take shortcuts. That review packet from the last mock exam, the one that had matched the actual questions so closely, had never been her own work. Her father had used his position to obtain an advance copy of the city's mock exam questions and leaked them to her.She took those questions, made a few minor changes, and photocopied them for the class. That was the only reason everyone's scores had risen so sharply in such a short time.It was also how she had overtaken me so easily and claimed first place in our grade. The whole image she had built around "work-life balance" and easy score gains had never been anything more than a cover for her lack of real ability. It was also a way to win over the class and feed her own vanity. She knew she could keep taking shortcuts as long as she had her father's connections to rely on.No mat

  • Trusting the Wrong Genius   Chapter 6

By the time I opened the group chat, the messages had already piled up into the hundreds. The screen was packed with line after line of text, but none of it carried the relief of finishing an exam. It was all despair and regret.[It's over. We're completely done for!][Every single problem looked familiar. I practiced all of them back when I studied with Summer. But the second I sat down in that exam hall, my mind went blank. I couldn't even remember where to start!][On the last two math problems, I couldn't even write the first step. Summer used to break everything down so carefully, and somehow I forgot every bit of it!][The essay part was even worse. Every template I memorized fell apart, and I misspelled a ton of words. Three years of studying, wasted!][This is all Selene's fault! All that talk about balance and easy points. We went along with her, eating, drinking, and having fun, but we never actually mastered the material. Now it's all blown up in our faces!][We neve
