Chapter 3

Autor: Lynn Green
All these years, I had always paid for everything myself. I bought practice books one at a time, worked through problem after problem to organize the material, then paid out of pocket to have everything printed into study packets.

After two years, I had never asked a single person in the class for a cent.

I slowly scrolled back through the chat history. It held two years' worth of conversations between my classmates and me about schoolwork.

Math was Cole Clarkson's biggest weakness. I created a tailored study plan for him, broke down the key concepts, put together a customized set of practice problems, and watched his scores climb little by little.

Melissa Ludley's grades were poor, and her family saw school as a waste of money and pressured her to drop out. I tutored her privately time and again, helped raise her scores, and kept her chance of staying in school alive.

Whenever Wendy Walters ran into a type of problem she could not solve or a concept she could not untangle, I patiently broke it down step by step and helped her overcome the hurdle.

…

I remembered every one of my classmates' weak points, gaps in their foundations, and struggles that held back their scores better than they did themselves.

But now, all of it amounted to nothing more than me getting sentimental over my own sacrifices.

I did not wallow in self-pity. Instead, I opened my chat with a close friend who had been a year ahead of me in middle school.

After graduating from college, she had opened her own in-person tutoring center, and she had wanted to buy my full set of notes and problem sets for quite some time.

I sent her a message.

[Hey, you mentioned before that you wanted to buy the notes I put together. I just finished organizing a new set. Do you still want it?]

She replied almost instantly.

[Yes, yes, yes! We'll take it! We'll pay top dollar!]

I smiled faintly. I remembered that quite a few students from the class next door studied at her tutoring center. I could not wait to see what happened.

At the next mock exam, my class would be compared against the class next door.

…

My class had spent all that time chasing the shortcuts Selene preached.

The other class had spent it grinding through problems and building solid fundamentals.

I expected the gap between them to be impossible to ignore.

For the rest of that stretch, Selene's speeches swallowed up nearly every free period.

"Honestly, everyone's been fooled by this so-called local-style education. Burying your head in books doesn't even work for students today. What we need is a balance between work and rest!

"I'm speaking from experience. At Enasteri High School, I never had to grind through concepts. I just memorized the conclusions, and the time I saved was completely worth it.

"Isn't it better to spend that extra time having fun? Young people should live a little. Don't let studying tie you down!"

At first, everyone was thrilled to be free of my tutoring. They no longer had to stay up late grinding through problems. Of course they were happy.

But after a solid month of that, quite a few of them started to feel uneasy. Without coordinating with one another, they began coming to me one by one to vent.

Wendy was the first. "Summer, you have no idea. Selene dragged us all out to karaoke last night. We didn't leave until midnight.

"Today, the teacher called on me to answer a question, and my voice was so hoarse I couldn't get a word out. I got scolded for it."

Then Melissa came to me. "I was planning to finish my homework at home this weekend, then help my mom at her food truck.

"But Selene insisted I was being a killjoy and dragged me to the arcade instead. She said if I didn't come, she wouldn't let me keep studying with her, so I didn't have a choice."

Every time, I just listened quietly. I never said a word or offered an opinion.

…

The mock exam kept drawing closer, but Selene continued dragging them out to have fun. She even dared to skip the study halls the school had scheduled.

Denise finally could not take it anymore. She grabbed my hand, urgency filling her voice. "Summer, what are we supposed to do? If we keep messing around with Selene like this, can we really still get into college? I look at my textbooks now, and they feel like strangers."

I yanked my hand free and said flatly, "Maybe. Hasn't Selene always gotten good grades?"

I was not deliberately being sarcastic. I still firmly believed that effort led to results, which stood in direct opposition to Selene's talk of shortcuts.

But ever since she had arrived, her scores had remained near the top on every single quiz. Once, she had even come within five points of beating me.

A moment later, Selene's eyes filled with a tangle of emotions: envy, resentment, and deep, festering hatred.I did not look away. I watched her calmly. She stopped and stared at me. A bitter, venomous smile twisted her lips as she spoke, her voice thick with resentment and fury. "Summer, you're really living it up, aren't you?""It's fine," I said flatly. "Quiet and steady."She let out a scornful laugh. The hatred in her eyes burned even hotter. "Quiet and steady?"You're just like everyone else at Enasteri High School. You all look down on people like me from your high horses."All you people know how to do is bury yourselves in books and think hard work will get you everything. I just wanted an easier path. Is that a crime?"I hate you, Summer! I hate all of you who were born able to get everything through effort!"Why does everything go your way while I end up like this?"Her voice cracked with hysterical resentment. Years of pent-up anger finally burst free all at once.

  • Trusting the Wrong Genius   Chapter 10

I loved this work. I loved watching students who wanted to change their lives, just as I once had, move closer to their dreams step by step with my help.I wanted to share everything I had experienced and learned with as many people as possible. I wanted to show them that where you started did not determine where you ended up, and that hard work never betrayed anyone. As long as you stayed grounded, worked hard, and refused to give up, even an ordinary person could build an extraordinary life.…Time passed quickly. Before I knew it, years had gone by, and I had long since established myself in the education field. The tutoring center continued to grow. Over the years, it helped thousands of students get into their dream colleges and change the course of their lives. My family was happy and secure. My parents were healthy, and we lived comfortably, free from financial worries. My future stretched out before me, bright and full of promise. As for my classmates, they eventually

My mother no longer had to spend her days scraping by behind the counter of that small stationery shop. She no longer had to rise before dawn or stay up late at night, scraping together profits a few cents at a time. At last, she could set down the burden she had carried for so long and rest comfortably at home.Once in a while, she chatted with the neighbors or went out for a walk. Her days became peaceful and steady.Through my own efforts, I had lifted my family out of poverty and left those years of hardship behind. I had given my parents the stable, secure life they deserved. That had always been the whole point of everything I had worked for.…After the new semester began, I officially joined my senior's tutoring center as both a partner and a full-time teacher. The center had always enjoyed a strong reputation. Most of its students came from ordinary families. They had weak academic foundations and hoped to change the course of their lives through hard work.I contri

The classmates who had once mocked me for being "too slow" and "holding them back" now sat there with ashen faces and hollow eyes.Even Denise, my deskmate, who had once told me not to be upset because Selene offered them a better future, had only scored high enough to get into an ordinary community college in some remote area.It was a world away from the university she had once dreamed of attending. As they stared at their scores, every one of them thought of me, whether they meant to or not. They remembered how I had tutored them for free, day after day, for two years. I had stayed up late organizing lecture notes, paid out of my own pocket to print study materials, and patiently broken down every difficult concept for them. They remembered how coldly they had pushed me out, how eagerly they had chosen a cheater like Selene, and how they had mocked both my hard work and everything I had done for them.Regret washed over them like a rising tide. Sadly, no amount of regret could

  • Trusting the Wrong Genius   Chapter 7

With nowhere else to turn, Selene transferred to our school. She knew she had no real ability of her own, so she relied on her father's connections to take shortcuts. That review packet from the last mock exam, the one that had matched the actual questions so closely, had never been her own work. Her father had used his position to obtain an advance copy of the city's mock exam questions and leaked them to her.She took those questions, made a few minor changes, and photocopied them for the class. That was the only reason everyone's scores had risen so sharply in such a short time.It was also how she had overtaken me so easily and claimed first place in our grade. The whole image she had built around "work-life balance" and easy score gains had never been anything more than a cover for her lack of real ability. It was also a way to win over the class and feed her own vanity. She knew she could keep taking shortcuts as long as she had her father's connections to rely on.No mat

  • Trusting the Wrong Genius   Chapter 6

By the time I opened the group chat, the messages had already piled up into the hundreds. The screen was packed with line after line of text, but none of it carried the relief of finishing an exam. It was all despair and regret.[It's over. We're completely done for!][Every single problem looked familiar. I practiced all of them back when I studied with Summer. But the second I sat down in that exam hall, my mind went blank. I couldn't even remember where to start!][On the last two math problems, I couldn't even write the first step. Summer used to break everything down so carefully, and somehow I forgot every bit of it!][The essay part was even worse. Every template I memorized fell apart, and I misspelled a ton of words. Three years of studying, wasted!][This is all Selene's fault! All that talk about balance and easy points. We went along with her, eating, drinking, and having fun, but we never actually mastered the material. Now it's all blown up in our faces!][We neve
