Chapter 5

Autor: Lynn Green
I followed everyone's gaze to the results board.

First place: Selene Chevalier.

Second place: Summer Barnes.

Selene had beaten me and taken the top spot in the grade, a position I had held for more than two years.

Selene stood off to the side of the crowd, her eyes gleaming with satisfaction. "See? I told you there was nothing wrong with my study method.

"Lucky for all of you that I transferred into this class. Otherwise, who knows how much longer that so-called top student would've held you back."

The moment she said it, several classmates around me shot me strange looks.

I clenched my fists without thinking, but I couldn't come up with a single word to argue back.

Selene wasn't wrong. Grades were the most direct proof there was.

This time, I really had lost to her. Even the students from the class next door who had used the notes I'd put together had failed to outperform the students in my own class who had studied with Selene's materials.

Was it possible that there really was something wrong with the way I tutored?

The thought had barely surfaced before I shut it down.

One reaped what they sowed. Nothing in this world rewarded results without the effort to earn them. Unless something else was going on.

…

That night, after I got home, I privately messaged Denise and asked her for the review packet Selene had sent out before the mock exam.

After I went through it carefully, the truth hit me.

Eighty percent of the problem types in that packet matched the questions on the mock exam almost exactly. It was practically the same as having the questions leaked in advance.

However, the mock exam questions came from the city's Department of Education. How could Selene possibly have known what would be on the test?

No matter how much I turned it over in my head, I couldn't figure it out.

Still, I kept the discovery to myself. I had no real proof. If I spoke up recklessly, people would only see it as jealousy over losing first place and accuse me of trying to slander Selene out of spite.

Whether my suspicions were right or not, the college entrance exam would settle it soon enough.

A mock exam might have loopholes that allowed questions to leak. The real exam would never allow that kind of shortcut.

…

In the days that followed, I accepted my senior's invitation to work at her tutoring center.

I went there every day and worked one-on-one with her students to reinforce concepts and clarify key points.

Meanwhile, the classmates who had still felt a flicker of unease after the mock exam now threw themselves completely into eating, drinking, and having fun with Selene. Their mock exam scores gave them all the excuse they needed.

Two days before the college entrance exam, they even went out to a bar with her to unwind.

"The worst thing you can do before an exam is get too tense. Having a little fun now and then helps you perform better.

"Just stick with me and you can't go wrong. I guarantee most of our class will get into an Ivy League school!" Selene claimed.

The nights before the college entrance exam were supposed to be reserved for getting enough sleep and eating light meals. Going out drinking at a bar was out of the question.

I stepped in to stop them, but the class president led the mockery against me. "Come on, Summer. We get that you're jealous of Selene, but the facts speak for themselves. You just don't measure up to her in any way."

"Exactly! We're lucky Selene transferred into our class. Otherwise, who knows how much longer your rigid tutoring style would've held us back!"

"If it weren't for you, we'd already be on track for Northshine University!"

Hearing all that, whatever warmth I had left toward them vanished. After that, I stopped bothering with anything related to the class.

…

The weather was clear on both days of the college entrance exam.

Because I already had a recommendation slot, I didn't sit for the exam myself. I only went through that year's leaked practice papers online.

There was nothing unusual about the problem types. I had practiced all of them before. Anyone who had put in steady, honest effort should have scored well.

After the final subject ended, I planned to reach out to my senior at the tutoring center.

Instead, the moment I opened my phone, I saw that the senior class group chat had exploded.

There were more than 99 messages, and every single one was either tagging Selene or... me.

A moment later, Selene's eyes filled with a tangle of emotions: envy, resentment, and deep, festering hatred.I did not look away. I watched her calmly. She stopped and stared at me. A bitter, venomous smile twisted her lips as she spoke, her voice thick with resentment and fury. "Summer, you're really living it up, aren't you?""It's fine," I said flatly. "Quiet and steady."She let out a scornful laugh. The hatred in her eyes burned even hotter. "Quiet and steady?"You're just like everyone else at Enasteri High School. You all look down on people like me from your high horses."All you people know how to do is bury yourselves in books and think hard work will get you everything. I just wanted an easier path. Is that a crime?"I hate you, Summer! I hate all of you who were born able to get everything through effort!"Why does everything go your way while I end up like this?"Her voice cracked with hysterical resentment. Years of pent-up anger finally burst free all at once.

  • Trusting the Wrong Genius   Chapter 10

I loved this work. I loved watching students who wanted to change their lives, just as I once had, move closer to their dreams step by step with my help.I wanted to share everything I had experienced and learned with as many people as possible. I wanted to show them that where you started did not determine where you ended up, and that hard work never betrayed anyone. As long as you stayed grounded, worked hard, and refused to give up, even an ordinary person could build an extraordinary life.…Time passed quickly. Before I knew it, years had gone by, and I had long since established myself in the education field. The tutoring center continued to grow. Over the years, it helped thousands of students get into their dream colleges and change the course of their lives. My family was happy and secure. My parents were healthy, and we lived comfortably, free from financial worries. My future stretched out before me, bright and full of promise. As for my classmates, they eventually

My mother no longer had to spend her days scraping by behind the counter of that small stationery shop. She no longer had to rise before dawn or stay up late at night, scraping together profits a few cents at a time. At last, she could set down the burden she had carried for so long and rest comfortably at home.Once in a while, she chatted with the neighbors or went out for a walk. Her days became peaceful and steady.Through my own efforts, I had lifted my family out of poverty and left those years of hardship behind. I had given my parents the stable, secure life they deserved. That had always been the whole point of everything I had worked for.…After the new semester began, I officially joined my senior's tutoring center as both a partner and a full-time teacher. The center had always enjoyed a strong reputation. Most of its students came from ordinary families. They had weak academic foundations and hoped to change the course of their lives through hard work.I contri

The classmates who had once mocked me for being "too slow" and "holding them back" now sat there with ashen faces and hollow eyes.Even Denise, my deskmate, who had once told me not to be upset because Selene offered them a better future, had only scored high enough to get into an ordinary community college in some remote area.It was a world away from the university she had once dreamed of attending. As they stared at their scores, every one of them thought of me, whether they meant to or not. They remembered how I had tutored them for free, day after day, for two years. I had stayed up late organizing lecture notes, paid out of my own pocket to print study materials, and patiently broken down every difficult concept for them. They remembered how coldly they had pushed me out, how eagerly they had chosen a cheater like Selene, and how they had mocked both my hard work and everything I had done for them.Regret washed over them like a rising tide. Sadly, no amount of regret could

With nowhere else to turn, Selene transferred to our school. She knew she had no real ability of her own, so she relied on her father's connections to take shortcuts. That review packet from the last mock exam, the one that had matched the actual questions so closely, had never been her own work. Her father had used his position to obtain an advance copy of the city's mock exam questions and leaked them to her.She took those questions, made a few minor changes, and photocopied them for the class. That was the only reason everyone's scores had risen so sharply in such a short time.It was also how she had overtaken me so easily and claimed first place in our grade. The whole image she had built around "work-life balance" and easy score gains had never been anything more than a cover for her lack of real ability. It was also a way to win over the class and feed her own vanity. She knew she could keep taking shortcuts as long as she had her father's connections to rely on.No mat

  • Trusting the Wrong Genius   Chapter 6

By the time I opened the group chat, the messages had already piled up into the hundreds. The screen was packed with line after line of text, but none of it carried the relief of finishing an exam. It was all despair and regret.[It's over. We're completely done for!][Every single problem looked familiar. I practiced all of them back when I studied with Summer. But the second I sat down in that exam hall, my mind went blank. I couldn't even remember where to start!][On the last two math problems, I couldn't even write the first step. Summer used to break everything down so carefully, and somehow I forgot every bit of it!][The essay part was even worse. Every template I memorized fell apart, and I misspelled a ton of words. Three years of studying, wasted!][This is all Selene's fault! All that talk about balance and easy points. We went along with her, eating, drinking, and having fun, but we never actually mastered the material. Now it's all blown up in our faces!][We neve
