Chapter 4

Autor: Lynn Green
The only problem was that, out of everyone who kept fooling around like that, Selene was the only one who managed to keep her grades up.

A couple of days later, Denise came to find me again. "Summer, why don't you talk to the class president? Maybe you could go back to tutoring us.

"I know it's slower, but at least we'd actually make real progress. That has to be better than drifting along like this."

"No," I refused without a second thought.

I wasn't going to throw myself at people who didn't want me. Not a second time.

The day before the mock exam, Selene finally organized a token study session.

She carried a stack of photocopied materials to the front of the classroom and slapped them down on the podium. "I prepared all of this myself for everyone, free of charge. You don't need to waste money on practice books anymore. You can spend that money having fun instead."

As she spoke, she glanced over at me, her voice laced with provocation. "I would never do what certain people do. They pretend to tutor everyone for free when they're really using it as an excuse to make their classmates buy materials from their family's stationery store."

I ignored her and kept my head down as I packed up my things.

But she wouldn't let it go.

This time, she called me out by name, "Summer Barnes, what do you have to say for yourself? Why don't you tell everyone how much money you've made off them over the past two years by sending them to buy materials from your mom's shop?"

I could ignore her jabs at me, no matter how many times she made them. But the moment she dragged my family into it, I couldn't let it slide.

I snapped my head up and stared at her. "Selene, if you're going to accuse me of something, back it up with proof.

"My mother's stationery shop has always sold materials to our classmates at cost. Sometimes, she even gives them away for free.

"When have I ever made a single cent off anyone? Don't make up accusations out of nowhere."

"Making things up?" Selene let out a scornful laugh. "You know perfectly well whether I'm making things up. You've tutored everyone for free every single day. Isn't that just an excuse to drum up business for your family's shop and take our money?"

A few people nearby tried to smooth things over, but every word they said leaned in Selene's favor.

"Summer, Selene was probably just saying it offhand. Don't blow it out of proportion."

"We're all classmates. There's no need to make things this tense over a little money."

"Yeah, Summer, maybe Selene was just joking around. Don't take it to heart. Nobody actually thinks you made money off us."

Selene crossed her arms and looked pleased with herself. "I was just joking. Why are you taking it so seriously? You're acting like I bullied you or something."

In that instant, every eye in the room turned to me.

Some people were trying to make peace. Others were watching the show or whispering among themselves. Somehow, they made me feel like I was the one being unreasonable.

I was about to argue back when our school advisor suddenly walked into the classroom.

Her gaze swept across the noisy room before settling on me. "Summer, come to my office."

I followed her out of the classroom. "Summer, congratulations. Your recommendation for Northshine University has been approved. The school has already received the official notice, and we'll take care of the rest of the paperwork for you."

I froze for a moment. Then everything suddenly became clear.

All my earlier frustration vanished in an instant.

Now I even found myself looking forward to seeing what kind of scores the people who had embraced Selene's "work-life balance" would manage on the mock exam.

…

When the results came out, the whole class crowded around the announcement board to check the rankings.

To everyone's shock, our class had claimed almost every top spot in the grade.

Classmates who used to rank in the lower-middle range had shot up the rankings, with some gaining nearly two hundred points in a single month.

Someone couldn't help but cheer. "This is amazing! I can't believe I gained this many points! We're set now! We're definitely getting into a good college!"

"Guess we really did need Selene. After two years of tutoring with Summer, we never saw improvement like this."

"Look at the board! Selene's number one! She actually beat Summer!"

A moment later, Selene's eyes filled with a tangle of emotions: envy, resentment, and deep, festering hatred.I did not look away. I watched her calmly. She stopped and stared at me. A bitter, venomous smile twisted her lips as she spoke, her voice thick with resentment and fury. "Summer, you're really living it up, aren't you?""It's fine," I said flatly. "Quiet and steady."She let out a scornful laugh. The hatred in her eyes burned even hotter. "Quiet and steady?"You're just like everyone else at Enasteri High School. You all look down on people like me from your high horses."All you people know how to do is bury yourselves in books and think hard work will get you everything. I just wanted an easier path. Is that a crime?"I hate you, Summer! I hate all of you who were born able to get everything through effort!"Why does everything go your way while I end up like this?"Her voice cracked with hysterical resentment. Years of pent-up anger finally burst free all at once.

  • Trusting the Wrong Genius   Chapter 10

I loved this work. I loved watching students who wanted to change their lives, just as I once had, move closer to their dreams step by step with my help.I wanted to share everything I had experienced and learned with as many people as possible. I wanted to show them that where you started did not determine where you ended up, and that hard work never betrayed anyone. As long as you stayed grounded, worked hard, and refused to give up, even an ordinary person could build an extraordinary life.…Time passed quickly. Before I knew it, years had gone by, and I had long since established myself in the education field. The tutoring center continued to grow. Over the years, it helped thousands of students get into their dream colleges and change the course of their lives. My family was happy and secure. My parents were healthy, and we lived comfortably, free from financial worries. My future stretched out before me, bright and full of promise. As for my classmates, they eventually

My mother no longer had to spend her days scraping by behind the counter of that small stationery shop. She no longer had to rise before dawn or stay up late at night, scraping together profits a few cents at a time. At last, she could set down the burden she had carried for so long and rest comfortably at home.Once in a while, she chatted with the neighbors or went out for a walk. Her days became peaceful and steady.Through my own efforts, I had lifted my family out of poverty and left those years of hardship behind. I had given my parents the stable, secure life they deserved. That had always been the whole point of everything I had worked for.…After the new semester began, I officially joined my senior's tutoring center as both a partner and a full-time teacher. The center had always enjoyed a strong reputation. Most of its students came from ordinary families. They had weak academic foundations and hoped to change the course of their lives through hard work.I contri

The classmates who had once mocked me for being "too slow" and "holding them back" now sat there with ashen faces and hollow eyes.Even Denise, my deskmate, who had once told me not to be upset because Selene offered them a better future, had only scored high enough to get into an ordinary community college in some remote area.It was a world away from the university she had once dreamed of attending. As they stared at their scores, every one of them thought of me, whether they meant to or not. They remembered how I had tutored them for free, day after day, for two years. I had stayed up late organizing lecture notes, paid out of my own pocket to print study materials, and patiently broken down every difficult concept for them. They remembered how coldly they had pushed me out, how eagerly they had chosen a cheater like Selene, and how they had mocked both my hard work and everything I had done for them.Regret washed over them like a rising tide. Sadly, no amount of regret could

With nowhere else to turn, Selene transferred to our school. She knew she had no real ability of her own, so she relied on her father's connections to take shortcuts. That review packet from the last mock exam, the one that had matched the actual questions so closely, had never been her own work. Her father had used his position to obtain an advance copy of the city's mock exam questions and leaked them to her.She took those questions, made a few minor changes, and photocopied them for the class. That was the only reason everyone's scores had risen so sharply in such a short time.It was also how she had overtaken me so easily and claimed first place in our grade. The whole image she had built around "work-life balance" and easy score gains had never been anything more than a cover for her lack of real ability. It was also a way to win over the class and feed her own vanity. She knew she could keep taking shortcuts as long as she had her father's connections to rely on.No mat

By the time I opened the group chat, the messages had already piled up into the hundreds. The screen was packed with line after line of text, but none of it carried the relief of finishing an exam. It was all despair and regret.[It's over. We're completely done for!][Every single problem looked familiar. I practiced all of them back when I studied with Summer. But the second I sat down in that exam hall, my mind went blank. I couldn't even remember where to start!][On the last two math problems, I couldn't even write the first step. Summer used to break everything down so carefully, and somehow I forgot every bit of it!][The essay part was even worse. Every template I memorized fell apart, and I misspelled a ton of words. Three years of studying, wasted!][This is all Selene's fault! All that talk about balance and easy points. We went along with her, eating, drinking, and having fun, but we never actually mastered the material. Now it's all blown up in our faces!][We neve
