I went to my son's birthday party and was stopped at the door. "I'm Lucas Caldwell's mother." The hotel manager looked me up and down with a smirk. "You? Mrs. Caldwell has been running around for days getting everything ready. She's inside greeting the VIP guests right now." My breath hitched. What other Mrs. Caldwell? I tried calling my husband, Nathan Caldwell, but he didn't pick up. My texts went unanswered. Guests arrived one after another, each shooting me bewildered looks. I swallowed my pride and begged the manager to bring Lucas out to get me. She came back a moment later, her face dripping with contempt. "Lucas says his mommy is right beside him." The blood drained from my face. "He said that himself?" She waved me off in disgust. "This is an exclusive event. Don't even think about sneaking in. Get lost!" I drove home in a fog and found an Instagram post from my younger sister, Sienna Pierce. My son had his arms around her. My husband leaned toward her, his head slightly tilted her way. The caption read: "Got the birthday boy's official stamp of approval, and every bit of work was worth it! Happy birthday, sweetheart!" So my place in this family had been taken long ago. I sent a text: "The product launch at the end of the month. I'll be there in person." It was time to put an end to all of this.

Chapter 1

My business partner, Rachel Hartwell, immediately sent a barrage of voice messages.

"Thank God you've finally come around! The AI world better brace itself!"

"I'm so excited! The mystery genius everyone's been speculating about for three days is finally going to show her face!"

"I originally predicted our company's valuation would quintuple after the launch, but if you show up in person, we're talking at least ten times!"

"Wait... I think I know why you're doing this..."

She sent a screenshot.

Just then, the door opened.

Nathan walked in carrying a sleeping Lucas, slipping off his shoes as quietly as he could.

He spotted me on the couch and barely lifted an eyelid. "Waiting up for him? Go to bed. He had a great time today."

His tone was impossibly casual.

I laughed, though nothing was funny.

"I was turned away at the door of my own son's birthday party. Did you know that?"

He adjusted his hold, shifting Lucas into a more comfortable position. "Why didn't you call me..." He paused, as if just remembering. "Oh. My phone died."

He showed no surprise and no guilt.

But that flat, indifferent tone was the match that lit the fuse. All the humiliation and bitterness I'd been holding back ignited at once.

The hotel manager's sneer flashed through my mind, along with all those loaded looks from the guests.

My teeth were chattering. I fought to keep my voice steady. "Nathan, you wanted to keep our marriage a secret. I agreed."

"Everyone in your circle knows you're married with a kid, but none of your son's classmates or their parents have ever met me."

I held up my phone, showing him Sienna's Instagram post, the same screenshot Rachel had sent. "You know exactly what my relationship with Sienna is, and you still let her throw his birthday party?"

The comments section was endless.

Trust-fund heirs and political scions lined up to send their congratulations.

"What a beautiful family of three."

"Mystery solved! The elusive Mrs. Caldwell is actually an international racing champion!"

These were all Nathan's friends.

I'd heard every one of their names, but never met a single one of them.

A flicker of embarrassment crossed Nathan's face.

The more I thought about it, the angrier I got, and I couldn't help raising my voice. "Everyone thinks she's your wife now. How is that acceptable to you?"

His eyes turned sharp, and he pressed a finger to his lips, shushing me. "During the two years abroad, Lucas got used to having his aunt around. Letting her plan the party was his idea."

"But I'm the one who—"

"It's late." He cut me off, irritation flashing across his brow. "Whatever this is, it can wait until tomorrow."

I watched his retreating back, his arms cradling our son with impossible tenderness.

He had once shown me that same careful devotion.

When I was rushing to finish my thesis and came down with a fever at midnight, he crossed half the city in the pouring rain to bring me medicine.

After we got our marriage certificate, he planned an elaborate honeymoon, checking off every destination on my wish list.

When my morning sickness was unbearable and I tossed and turned through the nights, he stayed up rubbing my back, leaving himself unable to work for days.

Back then, the boy I'd loved for over a decade happened to love me back.

So I turned down the offer from the computer science research institute and threw myself headlong into marriage.

Until three years ago, when our happiness quietly ground to a halt.

Lucas was two then. Nathan took him abroad for an extended business trip.

I was left behind, drowning in anxiety and longing.

All I got in return was watching my husband and son grow closer to Sienna.

Then Sienna stepped into the spotlight as the lady of the house.

His love had started fading three years earlier.

I let out a long breath and called Rachel.

"I'm seeing a lawyer tomorrow to have divorce papers drawn up."

Rachel was livid. "You better take him for half of everything. You deserve it!"

"No. I'm walking away with nothing."

"What? You don't want custody, you don't want any assets? Are you out of your mind?"

"The only way to move on fast enough to focus on the business is to make a clean break. Isn't that what you've been wanting all along?"

Rachel slammed her hand on the table. "Then you better look drop-dead gorgeous at that launch and blind every last one of them! Shove it right in their faces! I am going to sit back and enjoy watching them fall apart!"

The story and synopsis don't match. They're 2 different things.
