Chapter 1

The time machine erupted with a blinding flash of light. I squeezed my eyes shut, only to suddenly hear Sophia Hayes' mocking voice.

"My parents threatened suicide to force me to marry you, Julian Reed. I bet you’re happy now that you've gotten what you wanted, huh?

"But even if we get married, what exactly will you gain? Do you really think we can be happy together?"

My eyes flew open to see Sophia standing before me, still alive and breathing.

She was wearing an elegant long dress and had her hair pulled up in a high ponytail, radiating youthful energy. Even so, her eyes were unable to hide their contempt.

The Sophia from my future was mature, cold, and unapproachable, but this version of her was bright and spirited, still carrying a touch of liveliness.

A lump formed in my throat when I laid my eyes on her.

The time machine had indeed brought me back to the past, but unfortunately, it seemed to have malfunctioned. Instead of returning to when we first met, I had arrived thirteen years in the past, on the day Sophia and I were about to be married.

Thankfully, there was still a chance to make things right at this point.

Fighting back the bitterness in my heart, I stared at her with a smirk.

"Sophia, you don't want to marry me because the person you truly want to marry is Ethan Brooks. Am I right?"

I might have struck a nerve because her body suddenly stiffened. She looked at me coldly and said, "So what if that's true? We're already standing here. How can I back out now?"

I nodded honestly. "You can."

Sophia laughed derisively. "I don't have time for your games of playing hard to get. Just sign the papers and get the marriage certificate done with. I'll wait for you outside."

Watching her walk away, my heart felt as if it were being pierced by a sharp needle.

In both my past life and this one, I had loved Sophia for many years.

She had saved my life twice without hesitation, leading me to believe she secretly had feelings for me.

Her parents, Gavin Hayes and Allison Sinclair, had also encouraged me to pursue her.

They said to me, "Sophia is harsh with her words, but she’s a softie at heart. If she didn't love you, why would she risk her life to save you twice?"

I believed them wholeheartedly and happily prepared to marry her. It was not until after her first love died that I realized she had feelings for someone else.

Her final words before death—that she wished she had never met me—had completely crushed me.

My decade of love had simply been her decade of torment.

Before activating the time machine, the stuff had told me that I could only sever our ill-fated connection by fulfilling Sophia's three regrets.

By doing this, she would not die at thirty years old because of me. Both of us would have our own smooth, diverged paths in life from that point on.

Hence, I looked down and wrote Ethan's name on the marriage application form.

I clearly remembered the three regrets Sophia had written in her diary.

"I regret marrying Julian. I regret not standing up to my parents, and I regret not saving Ethan."

Now, her first regret was being addressed.

I walked out holding two marriage certificates. Sophia was waiting for me at the entrance.

She instinctively reached for the certificates to check them, but I quickly stopped her.

Later, when the final list was released, my name had surprisingly appeared on it.That day, I found Sophia in a cafe and asked her, "Did you help me with this? What did it cost you?"She replied, "I gave up a small portion of company shares. It's nothing significant. You're worth it to me."I almost laughed in frustration. This was hardly an insignificant matter. She probably had not even obtained approval from the board of directors to do this.Sophia said, "None of that matters, as long as you're happy. After all, you're the most important person in my life."The most important person?Noticing me staring at her, Sophia's ears reddened slightly, and she cleared her throat."I saw you liked some racing car photos the other day, so I've prepared a surprise for you tonight. When the time comes, you...""Sophia."I gently interrupted her. Seeing my serious expression, she quickly tried to explain."You don't like racing cars? I'm sorry, I'll make different arrangements right aw

However, my heart was not moved despite loving Sophia for so many years. I firmly rejected her confession and went abroad alone to study. For the next thirteen years, I threw myself completely into my studies and career, and life flowed smoothly. After returning from studying overseas, I secured a position as a professor at a prestigious university back home.Upon discovering the wrong name on the marriage certificate, Sophia immediately went to the courthouse and filed for divorce the day after. This had surprised me, but her actions fortunately did not affect my future self, which was a relief.During these thirteen years, Sophia never argued with me like when we were married. Hence, the various stomach problems she had developed in the previous timeline had been successfully avoided. The Sophia of today had less of her former impulsiveness and had taken on a more mature demeanor, quietly remaining by my side day after day for the past decade. As I sorted through my memories,

The recording was of Ethan's voice. It was filled with calculation and manipulation. "Allison, do you really think forcing Sophia to marry Julian will make her love him? I just have to lift a finger and spin a few lies, and she comes running to me like an eager puppy."She believes everything I say without question. I'm the only one she loves, and she'd happily be strung along by me for her entire life."But she's just my backup. Rather than pining after one person, I prefer the thrill of being with different people."Allison cursed furiously on the phone, "You shameless scoundrel! Aren't you afraid of divine retribution?"The other party scoffed dismissively, and the recording abruptly ended.Sophia stood stunned. That was completely different to what she had imagined.Allison patted her head and said earnestly, "I don't know what kind of spell he cast on you, but he's a very calculating man. He puts on one face in public and another in private. This is his true nature."Julian

The insulated containers fell to the floor with a loud crash, spilling soup everywhere. It was followed by Sophia's incredulous, furious shout, "What did you just say?!"Her heart felt as if it had been struck by a sledgehammer, sending a sharp pain through her chest.Sophia forced herself to remain calm and immediately stepped toward the door, but her legs weakened, and she stumbled. Caleb was quick to catch her."Where is he now? Take me to him immediately!"Caleb hurried with Sophia to the hospital room. Sophia violently pushed the door open."Wait, Ms. Hayes! You can't go in yet."Several nurses rushed to stop her, but she pushed them aside. When Sophia reached the bedside and tremblingly lifted the white sheet covering the body’s face, she suddenly froze."This isn't Julian?"The nurse who had run in after her explained with a flushed face, "This is someone who happens to have the same name as Mr. Julian Reed. He also came to donate blood today."News about Mr. Brooks'

Now, with our parting imminent and our paths never to cross again, whether Sophia misunderstood me or not no longer mattered. At that moment, she spoke up, "I promised to watch the meteor shower with you last night, but I didn't keep my word. I remember you mentioned wanting to visit Lake Copo. Why don't we go for a trip in a few days?"I was surprised that she still remembered. I hesitated briefly before shaking my head in refusal."That won't be necessary."Surprisingly, Sophia did not respond with her usual sarcasm. Instead, she took out her phone and immediately booked tickets for five days from now."I understand if you're upset with me. I've booked the tickets. Once you've recovered in a few days, we'll go on our honeymoon.""That's not necessary, Sophia."Sophia looked at me, and I said softly, "Just don't feel obligated to me, and don't think you owe me anything. I'm the one who owes you."Those words were meant for Sophia, but also for myself. She cut me off with disp

"Sophia, you came."I saw Sophia approaching with a dark expression, striding toward me in a few quick steps. There was anger simmering in her eyes."Julian, just because I didn't go home with you and went to see Ethan instead, you ran to complain to my parents? Do you know they called and berated Ethan?"He was distracted by the whole situation and got hit by a car while crossing the street. He's bleeding heavily now and might die. Are you satisfied now?"I stood frozen in place. In my previous life, Ethan had also gotten into a car accident and emerged severe bleeding. He died because of a blood shortage at the hospital before they could save him.Perhaps Sophia was merely blasting me with sharp words and mockery before that, but she truly came to hate me after that incident.Even so, this was supposed to happen a month after our wedding. Why was it happening so much earlier now?I had been wondering how to fulfill Sophia's third wish. Now, the opportunity had presented itsel
