Chapter 1

I could practically taste how smug Ruth Stark felt as she ran her thumb over the gift box stamped with Frost Group's logo. She still put on an act, though.

"Jemima, don't take this to heart. Honestly… I've always thought this engagement should've been yours. After all, you're Mom and Dad's biological daughter. It's just that I've been in this circle for so long that Mr. Frost assumes I'm the real heiress… If you're upset, why don't I give you this gift instead?"

I almost laughed out loud at her fake concern.

Was she talking about Mason Frost, that devil of a man? Sure, he was the man people called Jarvon's prince, but everyone also knew he was obsessively perfectionistic to the point of being sick in the head. He could make someone redo a presentation three times over a single punctuation mark.

Since Ruth was so eager to walk right into a hellhole, why would I ever stop her?

I waved a hand, barely holding back my laughter. "Oh, I don't mind in the slightest. Go ahead and take it, Ruth. I wouldn't want such a 'blessing' even if you shoved it at me."

Ruth's face froze. She'd been waiting to see me lose it with jealousy. Instead, she'd gotten such a lackluster response.

"Jemima, you're so… generous," she forced through gritted teeth. Then, she turned to Mom and Dad. "Mom, Dad, it's getting late. I'll take Jemima upstairs to rest."

Mom and Dad were too busy basking in the joy of climbing up the social ladder and latching onto the Frosts to think too hard about anything. They agreed right away.

The moment we reached the second floor, the gentle, refined look on Ruth's face vanished. She stopped and looked at me contemptuously. She sneered and said, "Drop the act, Jemima. You're dying of jealousy inside, aren't you?"

Excuse me? I already said I didn't care, didn't I? Did she have short-term memory loss or something?

"Listen up—even if you're back now, this family and the engagement with the Frosts can only be mine! Trash like you from the sticks are only worthy of worshiping the ground I walk on!"

As soon as she finished, she suddenly threw herself backward with a dramatic gasp. "Ah! Jemima, why did you push me?"

The fake fall was smooth and practiced, like she'd studied thousands of trashy fake-heiress melodramas.

Too bad it was me she was trying to mess with. The instant her back hit the ground, I drew in a breath, gathered all my strength, and let out a scream ten times more tragic than hers. "Ruth! What's wrong?"

Before she could even react, I dropped down right on top of her. I swung my arms wide and started slapping, both hands going back and forth across her perfectly maintained face.

The slaps echoed down the hallway, the sounds crisp and satisfying.

As I hit her, I wailed with full-on soap-opera anguish. "Ruth, oh, Ruth! Don't scare me like this! Wake up! If anything happens to you, I'll go down with you!"

"Jemima, you bit—"

She struggled to get up while cursing me out, but I landed two more sharp slaps. The words she'd been about to spit out were instantly swallowed back down. Her face visibly started swelling.

Mom and Dad, hearing the commotion, finally came running in a panic. "What happened? What's going on?"

Ruth fought to peel her eyelids open a crack, mumbling through her swollen lips, "Mom… She hit…"

Ruth dropped to her knees and put on her best pitiful act. "Mom, please, give us your blessings. Micah and I grew up together. Our feelings for each other run deep…"Mom shook all over with rage, too angry to get a single word out.I watched this ridiculous scene and tightened my grip on the baseball bat. I laughed derisively and said, "Micah, you're seriously out of your mind."I swung the baseball bat hard into his shin, my expression instantly turning into one of grief. "She's a fake heiress, but you're a true heir! How can you screw your own parents over for an outsider? You've let this vixen scramble your brain!"As I hit him, I shouted in righteous anguish, "Micah, the same blood runs in our veins. Hurting you hurts me, too! But for the sake of our family, for the sake of all the generations of the Stark family who came before us, I have to be the bad guy today."I must beat some sense into you! It's only when a family is peaceful that it can prosper. We've got to get rid of

With a loud thwack, the baseball bat came down hard across Micah's back. He howled in pain, nearly rolling right off the chair.Ruth shrieked and dove for cover, throwing her arms over her head. In an instant, the study turned into a disaster zone with papers flying everywhere."Stop! Stop, it's me, Micah! I'm Micah, your brother!" Micah shouted as he dodged me, unable to take the beating anymore.I ignored him and continued swinging the baseball bat with full force, aiming straight for the softest parts of his body. "What nonsense are you spouting? What kind of son sneaks around in the middle of the night to steal his own family's money?"You're a thief, and that's that! How dare you skulk around in the dark and pretend to be my big brother? Take this, you shameless burglar!"I gave him a few more blows. He cried like his world was ending and screamed for help."What's going on? What's happening?"Mom and Dad were jolted awake by the commotion. They rushed over in their pajamas

The things Mrs. Frost had said the other day reverberated in Micah's ears.He knew I was a core talent personally picked by Frost Group and that I had a bright future ahead. If he were to offend Frost Group's rising star for the sake of a fake sister whose reputation was already in tatters…He hesitated. As Ruth sensed his wavering, her eyes turned steely for a split second before her body went limp. She threw herself into Micah's arms. "Micah…"She lifted her tear-filled eyes to meet his, her fingertip lazily tracing circles over his chest as her voice turned syrupy sweet, dripping with seduction. "As long as you help me this one time, I… I'll do anything for you…"Micah jolted. He stared down at her in disbelief, his voice shaking. "Ruth, you… You knew all along?"He'd always harbored a secret, forbidden desire for this "sister" who didn't share his blood.Ruth ducked her head shyly. A flash of disgust flickered in her eyes, but the words that came out of her mouth were loving

Mr. Wendell sent back a lewd emoji.Ruth locked her phone, looking disgusted. Then, she took a deep breath, switched to a pitiful, doe-eyed expression, and walked out with two glasses of red wine."Jemima…" She stopped in front of me, tears already rolling down her cheeks, looking every bit the remorseful sinner. "I'm sorry, Jemima. I totally lost my mind just now. I never should've tried to pin the blame on you like that."I know I messed up, so I brought you this glass of wine to apologize. I hope you can forgive me so we can still get along well from now on."As she spoke, she tilted her head back and drained one glass of wine. She held the other one out to me.When I didn't move, her eyes reddened. She looked like she was about to cry again. "Jemima, why aren't you drinking? Is it because you won't forgive me? I know I was wrong. If you don't drink this, it means you're still mad at me. I'll have no choice but to get on my knees and beg you…"People around us started whisperi

Mrs. Frost pointed at me, still kneeling on the floor, and said with a hint of appreciation in her tone, "This one that you all call a wild brat, Jemima Stark, is the talent I personally picked. As for Ms. Ruth Stark over here…"She gave Ruth, who was still trembling on the ground, a glance filled with contempt. "Not only did you daydream and leech off someone else's benefits, but you even dared to fantasize about marrying my son. You must be out of your mind. You should go see a psychiatrist."Her words were like a bolt of lightning that struck the Starks right on their heads."S-So, we misunderstood…" Mom and Dad laughed awkwardly.Ruth's face, on the other hand, was filled with venomous hatred. She'd lost on all fronts this time. She hadn't managed to latch onto the Frosts, and she'd ruined her own reputation at the same time. She'd become the laughingstock of the entire room. She bit down hard on her lip, wishing the ground would just open up and swallow her whole. As if I'd

Micah and Ruth were so engrossed in acting out their own script that they didn't hear the mockery in Mrs. Frost's tone at all."Mrs. Frost, look at this gown! Our family spent six months begging an embroidery expert for this one-of-a-kind piece!" Micah pointed at the pile of shredded fabric, declaring in outrage, "We wanted to surprise you with it, but this brat destroyed it!"Ruth sobbed, covering her face as she cried, "It's true, Mrs. Frost… Jemima just can't stand to see me doing well. She even said that she would stop me from meeting you, even if it took destroying the gift to achieve that…"Mrs. Frost took off her sunglasses, swept an amused look over me, and asked, "Oh? Is that so?"I immediately dropped to my knees in a perfect slide, the kind that looked like I'd practiced it countless times. I went down on one knee and held the scissors up high in both hands like an offering. My face was full of devotion, and my voice was loud and shamelessly flattering."Your Majesty—uh
