Turns Out My Husband's Already Married

Lost in thought, I watched the woman dial a number.

"Louie Russell, I want a divorce. Get over here and sign the papers!"

She had him on speaker. A familiar voice came through, tinged with helplessness and indulgence. "Why the divorce talk again, honey? I'm sorry, okay? I was wrong."

The woman wiped the tears off her face. "Don't 'honey' me. I won't be your wife for much longer anyway. I'm telling you, get over here now to sign the papers.

"If you don't, I'm getting on a plane and leaving the country, and you'll never find me again. Two years apart, and we'll automatically be divorced anyway."

Panic leaked into his voice, followed by the clatter of an overturned chair. "Don't go. I'm on my way!"

She hung up and turned to the clerk, sniffling. "My husband's coming. Do we still have to wait 30 days after filing to get the certificate?"

"Yes. You can pick it up in 30 days."

The woman nodded and sank into a nearby chair, her red-rimmed eyes making her look utterly pitiful.

I wanted to walk away, but my strength was completely gone. I was trapped there, completely frozen.

My mind was totally blank. Part of me wanted to believe this was all just a nightmare.

How else could the marriage certificate I got two years ago be fake?

Snapping back to reality, I couldn't help asking, "Could you check it again? I got married right here two years ago. How could it be fake?"

The clerk held up the waterlogged document and pointed at the stamp. "Ms. Stevens, look here. The seal is completely crooked. It's definitely a fake. As for why, you might need to figure that out yourself."

She looked at me with a mix of pity and sympathy. I turned my head away, forcing myself to stand up and walk aside.

When the woman looked up and caught my eye, her eyes widened slightly. "Wow, you look just like me."

My heart skipped a beat.

The moment I realized the resemblance between her features and mine, my expression stiffened.

I opened my mouth to say something, but the door burst open. A man rushed in, breathless and disheveled.

"Honey!"

The woman and I both turned toward the voice at the same time. And then, I saw that familiar face.

Just yesterday, he was holding me, whispering sweet nothings in my ear.

Now, his eyes were fixed on another woman.

Melanie Jensen glared at Louie the second she saw him. "Good, you're here. Let's get these papers processed right now!"

Louie looked panicked, completely failing to notice me standing right beside them.
