Chapter Thirty Four

Jace’s POV

“Get the fuck out of my way! Move!”

The crowd between me and the pool doors parted, people stumbling back out of the way. They saw the look on my face that made them decide very quickly that standing in my path was not where they wanted to be.

Alison stepped into it anyway.

She put herself directly in front of me, one hand flat against my chest, her chin tilted up and her eyes sharp and searching my face.

"Jace…”

"Move."

"She fell, it's not a big deal."

Chapter Thirty FiveLena’s POVWait… Where am I?That was my first thought. I was feeling confused and groggy, because the ceiling above me didn’t look right, and I didn’t know whose ceiling it was or how I’d gotten underneath it.I was cold. That was the second thing, it went all the way through my soaking wet clothes deep into my bones.I blinked again. Why am I wet? I don’t understand… And why am I moving?A man’s set jaw was above me, his wet hair dripping onto his collar as he walked fast through a corridor I only half recognised, carrying me against his chest with both arms as if I weighed nothing. It felt perfectly natural, me being held this way by him, and I didn’t question it for a second until he pressed his lips to my forehead. He pressed a small kiss against my hairline and then my temple, and his voice came low and close to my ear, so different than how I was used to hearing it, all the sharp edges gone leaving only the ordinary human underneath.“I’m sorry.” He whispere

I took her wrist and roughly shoved her hand off me,. "You pushed her in. She told you she couldn't swim, she said it a thousand times, and you pushed her in anyway.""I didn't push anyone." Her voice stayed level but something flickered behind her eyes. "She slipped. Everyone saw it.""I saw it too."There was a beat of tense silence."So what?" The flicker was gone, replaced with something harder."So what, Jace? She's nothing. She's nobody. She's some broke scholarshi

Alison stepped forward. "Aww, look at you. Big runner, huh? Like Usain Bolt?" she asked, and the vicious grin was back now, lit up from underneath with real enjoyment. "Alright, let's give you a good workout then." She gestured toward the far end of the gym, toward the east corridor doors. Toward the pool. My blood went cold. "The pool's just down the hall," she said, addressing the room now as much as me, playing to the audience with glee. "If she loves running so much, let's give her somewhere to run. Jump in. That's the dare. What do you think, everybody? Fun, huh?" They screamed and cheered and clapped, stomping their feet and egging Allison on, going "Jump! Jump! Jump!!!" I shook my head. "No." "No?" "No." I pulled against the hands on my arms. "No, you don't understand, I can't swim. I'm not being dramatic, I genuinely cannot swim, so whatever else you want me to do I'll do it, but not that, please not that—" "She can't swim!" someone repeated in a high mocking voice,

Lena’s POV I stood in the middle of it with the cold still on my coat and the strobe lights washing everything in slow blue arcs, including everyone towering above me, and I made a decision. "I'm not playing," I said. Alison blinked. Then she laughed mockingly, pointing her finger at me. "I'm sorry?" "I said I'm not playing your game." I kept my voice as steady as I could manage, which wasn't very steady, but it was something. "I don't want to be here. I didn't come here for this, so I'm just going to—" I took one step toward the door and her hand shot out and caught my hair, twisting it tightly in her grip. I gasped in pain and shock. The pain felt hot and blinding, a white-hot streak across my scalp as she yanked me back by the roots, spinning me around to face her. The circle erupted, some gasping, most laughing, phones flying up everywhere at once. "You're not going anywhere," Alison said, very quietly, directly into my face. Her eyes had gone flat and cold and so

As the cab stopped me in front of the school, I sensed something was very, very wrong somewhere. Because for one, there was loud club music coming out of the front gates. “What the fudge is going on here?” I whispered to myself. “No, this has to be a mistake right? Maybe I misheard?” But I knew I hadn’t, he’d asked me to come to the school gym. And this was it. The gates were closed but not locked, sitting slightly open with the groundskeeper nowhere to be found. There was no security to be seen anywhere either. And from somewhere inside, muffled but present, came the low murmur of… laughter? I stood outside the gates for a moment, then I pushed them open and went inside, headed for the gym. The gym room was the source of the sound, no question. I could feel the bass in my feet on the path leading up to them, and there were voices underneath the music, a lot of voices, more than made sense for whatever I'd been imagining on the cab ride over. I pushed the door open. The noise

Lena's POV Martin had his head down over his comprehension worksheet when my phone rang. After a while he had gotten over his crying and shaking, then we took a break from math and worked together on his English. “That’s odd, it's an unknown number,” I muttered, sliding the receiver icon over to red. I silenced the phone and went back to watching him work. He was doing much better now, moving through the reading questions in a flow state with less of that frustrated stillness he got when the words weren't cooperating with him, and I didn't want to break his rhythm. "You're not going to answer that?" he asked, without looking up. "I don't answer unknown numbers." "Why not?" "Because you’re not supposed to. Its probably a scam or something, besides, if they were important to me, I would’ve already had their number saved.” He considered this. "Oh. I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to answer unknown numbers.” "Well, now you do. Let’s focus on question four, okay? We’ve already read
