Chapter 3

作者: Michelle
Forty-seven guests arrived at the Romano estate on Saturday evening.

State senators, shipping executives, foundation trustees, attorneys, and men Vittorio introduced only as old friends filled the ballroom. Every one of them had passed a background check I had designed. Every table had been placed according to a security plan I had written.

My name wasn't on the invitation.

Aunt Francesca fastened an emerald brooch to Bianca's gown. "Your grandmother wore this the night she joined the family committee. After tonight, no one will question who represents the next generation of Romanos."

Applause rose around them. I stood by the side entrance with an earpiece tucked beneath my hair, monitoring the security channel.

The seating plan was mine. The emergency routes were mine. Bianca's speech and financial presentation were mine. She received the champagne and camera flashes; I checked exits and solved problems before anyone noticed them.

An older guest held out his empty tumbler without looking at me. "Another bourbon, sweetheart."

I glanced at Elena. She had heard him. She merely tilted her chin toward the bar.

The message landed exactly as intended. Whatever my last name might be, I wasn't family tonight. I was staff with better clothes.

I took the glass, crossed to the bar, and handed it to a server. "Mr. Halloran would like another."

"I thought you were one of Vittorio's girls," the server whispered.

"So did I."

Bianca stepped onto the small stage and began reading the speech I had polished. Her voice steadied after the first paragraph. Behind me, two women spoke over the clink of silverware.

"The elder one has Vittorio's eyes."

"Keep your voice down. Alessia still doesn't know."

"After twelve years?"

"Elena says it's easier to manage her this way."

I kept my back to them and held the untouched bourbon without spilling a drop.

The secret wasn't something no one dared discuss. It was something everyone discussed as long as I wasn't supposed to hear.

After the speech, Bianca presented my risk report as an example of the foundation's new strategic planning. A gray-haired trustee waited until she finished, then leaned toward Marcus.

"Did Bianca really produce this?"

Marcus gave the answer he had probably rehearsed. "It was produced by the Romano family office."

The trustee smiled without humor. "I asked which Romano."

Across the room, my father's jaw tightened.

Halfway through dinner, Francesca stopped me beside the gallery. "The committee papers are still in the conference room. Bring them to your father, and don't touch anything that doesn't belong to you."

"What doesn't belong to me?"

"Committee seats. Trust rights. The inheritance." Her patience snapped. "You're an adopted girl who landed on her feet. Try acting grateful."

"Then why are you so nervous?"

Her face went still. Before she could answer, Marcus appeared between us. "Francesca, Vittorio needs you at the head table. Alessia, get the files."

It was less an interruption than a warning.

Arthur, the estate's aging butler, was clearing water glasses from the conference room. He had served the Romanos for thirty years. He was also the man who had carried me out of the hospital twelve years earlier.

I closed the door behind me. "Arthur, was I adopted into this family when I was six?"

His hands stopped over the silver tray. "Miss Alessia—"

"It's a yes-or-no question."

He lowered the glass carefully. "Mr. and Mrs. Romano brought their own daughter home from the hospital. I believed they would tell you when the doctors said you were ready."

The answer still hit like a punch, even though the birth record had already proved it. A government document was ink on paper. Arthur had buttoned my coat, brought soup when I was sick, and stood outside my room when nightmares from the crash woke me. He had watched me beg strangers not to send me away.

"Who knew?"

"The accident team, the attorneys, the senior relatives, and the older estate staff."

"Bianca?"

His eyes closed briefly. "Your mother told her when she was eight."

"So every time I apologized because I was scared they'd throw me out, all of you knew exactly what I was afraid of."

"Your father said the arrangement protected family stability."

"That's not what I asked."

Arthur looked down. "Yes. We knew."

"And you all went along with it."

He didn't defend himself. Somehow, that hurt more than another excuse.

I picked up the committee files and returned to the ballroom. Bianca was accepting a toast beneath the chandelier. When she saw me, her smile faltered for half a second.

She knew that I knew. I could see it on her face.

After the last guests left, she came to my room still wearing the emerald brooch. "Thank you for tonight. I would've crashed and burned without you."

"When did you find out?"

Her fingers tightened around the brooch. "Find out what?"

I waited. I didn't rescue her from the silence or offer her a softer question.

Bianca looked toward the hallway. "Is this about Scotland? You're probably stressed because you're leaving."

"Is that your answer?"

"I don't know what you want me to say."

At the door, she paused. "Wherever you go, you won't forget me, right? You're my sister."

She still couldn't say my real sister.

"Good night, Bianca."

My laptop chimed after the door closed. An email from Montrose appeared on the screen.

[Your student visa support documents have passed final review. Campus housing is available from Sunday afternoon.]

I tucked my backup phone and cash into the inside pocket of my coat.

Outside, workers were already taking down the gala lights.

For years, leaving had been my worst fear. Now the only thing that frightened me was staying.

  • Twelve Years As Their Fake Daughter   Chapter 10

One year later, I moved into a small apartment on the south side of Edinburgh. The kitchen was narrow and the radiator knocked whenever the weather turned cold, but my name was the only one on the lease. My parents had no spare key. No designer could arrive with a tape measure and announce that someone more important needed my room.I continued my studies at Montrose and became the lab's youngest paid research assistant. A European bank licensed our beneficial-ownership system. On the first page of the contract, under Core Authors, my name appeared first.Alessia Romano.I kept the surname because it was printed on my birth certificate. It had always belonged to me.When the trust review ended, my status as a lawful beneficiary was formally confirmed. Clara asked whether I wanted to claim a committee seat."Not right now," I said. "Keeping my rights doesn't mean I have to go back and live inside them."This time, no one could sign on my behalf. No one could call my refusal childish or

Three weeks later, Vittorio came to Edinburgh. He waited outside the research building beside a black Range Rover. There was more gray at his temples than I remembered. A year earlier, the sight of him waiting would have made me hurry over and apologize for keeping him outside.I didn't get in the car."We can talk in the cafe across the street," I said. "It's public, Clara knows you're here, and I'm recording. Those are the terms."His mouth tightened, but he followed me.We took a table near the counter. Vittorio removed his gloves and placed them beside a leather folder. "Elena is here too. She wants to see you.""I don't want to see her.""She's your mother."I met his eyes. "So we're admitting that now?"He sat back. "After the crash, you didn't recognize anyone. You fought the nurses and refused treatment. The doctors said you needed a story you could accept. When we told you we were kind people who had taken you in, you finally let us help.""So the first lie was for treatment.

Bianca sent me an encrypted folder. It contained forty-two old emails, medical reports from the crash, original files for projects I had completed after I turned fourteen, and an addendum to the family trust that no one had ever shown me.Three days after the accident, Elena had written to Marcus.[The doctors have confirmed severe long-term memory loss. Alessia doesn't recognize us or remember the estate.]A week later, she sent another message.[Bianca cannot cope with the possibility that the committee may favor the eldest daughter. Prepare an arrangement that leaves Alessia's legal identity unchanged while allowing her to believe she was adopted. It may need to last for years.]Marcus answered that he couldn't alter a state birth record. The story could only be maintained inside the family, which meant every informed employee would need to sign a confidentiality agreement. The final email came from Vittorio.[Then make her believe the Romano name was given to her out of charity. As

I met Nico Moretti in the cybersecurity lab.He was crouched in front of an open server rack, wrestling with a fiber connection, when I walked in for my first project meeting."You must be the first-year student who pushed the ownership model to ninety-seven percent accuracy," he said without looking up."And you must be the guy who shut down the test server and made me rerun four hours of work."He glanced over his shoulder and grinned. "Well, now that we've exchanged compliments, I guess we're acquainted."The Morettis and Romanos cooperated when money demanded it and watched each other the rest of the time. Nico's father had business ties to both sides, but Nico never asked about mine. He found bugs in my code, argued with my assumptions, and emailed before touching any data I had created. The first time he brought me hot chocolate, he tucked the receipt beneath the cup. "You get the next one.""You saved a receipt for three pounds?""I believe in clean accounting. Also, you're terr

Two weeks later, Bianca told me Elena had been hospitalized with stress-induced atrial fibrillation.[She woke up asking for you,] Bianca wrote. [The doctors say her heart rate is stable now, but she's scared.]Once, the slightest strain in Elena's voice would have sent me searching for something I had done wrong. Now I read the message twice and asked the only question that mattered.[Does she regret lying to me?]Bianca didn't answer for almost an hour. Then my phone rang.“How long have you known?” she asked the moment I picked up.“Since I went to the records office. I gave you a chance to tell me the truth after the gala.”Her breath caught. "I knew when I was eight. Mom sat me down after a committee dinner and said that if you learned you were their daughter too, the elders would fight over eldest-daughter succession.""You lied to me for ten years.""She said if I kept quiet, we'd always be a family. I was a kid, Alessia. I thought I was protecting us. Later, I didn't know how t

When my flight landed in Edinburgh, I connected my backup phone to the airport Wi-Fi. The family group chat loaded 186 unread messages.By midmorning, concern had curdled into accusation.[You frightened your sister.][Running away after everything we've done for you is beyond ungrateful.][Call me before your father gets involved.]Vittorio had sent only three.[Call me. Now.][I'll pull your departure record.][Come back before I find you, and we can pretend this never happened.]He didn't believe I could actually leave the Romanos. In his mind, the estate wasn't merely a home. It was the edge of the known world, and he had spent twelve years teaching me that one step beyond it meant falling. He froze the family credit card issued in my name and ordered security to check private airfields. He didn't know I had never used his card. I had taken a cab to JFK, paid for the ticket from my own account, and boarded a commercial flight with students, tourists, and a screaming toddler two row
