Chapter 2

作者: Michelle
Vittorio summoned me to his study the next morning.

Dominic DeLuca, head of estate security, stood near the windows. Marcus Vale, the family attorney, sat at the long table with a legal pad. I placed the revised risk report in front of my father.

"Three guests have had recent contact with the Moretti organization," I said. "The east terrace has a camera blind spot, and the liquor vendor hasn't completed background clearance on two temporary employees. I've included replacements and an evacuation route that avoids the service drive."

Dominic flipped through the report. "You did all this yourself?"

Vittorio closed the folder before I could answer. "Remove the author metadata from the electronic copy. Bianca will present it on Saturday."

"I wrote it."

The room went dead quiet.

Marcus's pen stopped. Dominic lowered his eyes to the page. Neither man looked surprised by my objection; they looked worried that I had said it out loud. Their reaction told me they both knew where the invisible line had been drawn.

Vittorio leaned back in his chair. "Are you asking the family to applaud you?"

"I'm asking to keep my name on my own work."

He rose and came around the desk. Vittorio rarely shouted. He didn't need to. In his world, men lowered their voices when they were about to make someone disappear from a contract, a company, or a room.

"Intelligence doesn't make you a Romano," he said. "Loyalty does. And loyalty means knowing what belongs to Bianca."

The lie was so complete it almost made me laugh. "Understood."

He handed the folder to Marcus. "Turn it into her presentation."

Then he looked at me as though the matter had been settled by law. "What's happening with Scotland?"

"My admission and scholarship are confirmed. I'm finishing the visa clearance."

"Before you leave, you'll sign a family nondisclosure agreement. If you cooperate, I'll allow you to keep access to our medical network and security resources."

Allow me. Even my departure had to sound like a favor he could grant or revoke.

"I'll have counsel review it first."

His eyebrows drew together. The old Alessia would have said, Yes, Dad, and thanked him for the privilege of signing. "Since when do you have counsel?"

"Since I'm signing a legal document in another country."

"Marcus represents the family."

"Exactly."

Dominic coughed into his fist. Vittorio's stare sharpened, but a knock at the door ended the exchange. I left before he could order me to stay.

At the turn in the corridor, I heard Elena enter the study. The door hadn't latched. I stopped, opened the recorder on my phone, and held it close to my coat.

Marcus spoke first. "She's eighteen now. She can request her own vital records. If Montrose asks for a certified copy—"

"You told us that had been handled," Elena snapped.

"I told you I could control the family narrative. I can't alter a state birth registration. The second she sees the names of her parents, she'll know there was never an adoption."

Silence stretched for several seconds.

"Then don't let her see it," Vittorio said.

Elena lowered her voice. "After the gala, I'll take her passport. Give her a few days to cool off and she'll stop talking about Scotland. She always comes around."

I ended the recording and kept walking at the same measured pace. My knees didn't start shaking until I was inside my car with the doors locked.

They weren't planning to tell me. They were planning to trap me.

I drove straight into town. My passport, certified birth record, spare bank card, and printed flight confirmation went into a private safe-deposit box. At the bus station, I rented a locker under no family-linked account and stored a plain duffel bag inside. It held clothes, a second phone, and enough cash to cross the country if my flight fell through.

When I returned, Bianca hurried down the front steps with a folder hugged to her chest. "Dad said my financial analysis isn't convincing enough. Could you redo it? Just the conclusions and the charts?"

I turned to the last page. The charts came from a model I had built for the foundation the previous year. My username had been removed and replaced with hers.

"Leave it on my desk."

"You're the best." She threw her arms around me.

My body went rigid, but Bianca didn't notice. Or maybe she noticed and chose not to ask. Either way, I hugged her back just long enough to keep the performance intact.

Until my visa support was final, they had to believe I was still housebroken.

That night, Marcus emailed me a twenty-seven-page nondisclosure agreement. Clause fourteen required me to acknowledge that the Romano surname, housing, education, medical care, and protection had been voluntarily provided by Vittorio and Elena and created no relationship of blood, inheritance, or trust entitlement.

They had stolen my past. Now they wanted my signature on the theft of my future.

I saved the document to my encrypted account and forwarded it to a student legal-aid address in Edinburgh. Then I moved my flight to early Monday morning.

On Saturday, the Romanos would parade their only daughter in front of everyone who mattered.

It would also be my last night on the estate.

  • Twelve Years As Their Fake Daughter   Chapter 10

One year later, I moved into a small apartment on the south side of Edinburgh. The kitchen was narrow and the radiator knocked whenever the weather turned cold, but my name was the only one on the lease. My parents had no spare key. No designer could arrive with a tape measure and announce that someone more important needed my room.I continued my studies at Montrose and became the lab's youngest paid research assistant. A European bank licensed our beneficial-ownership system. On the first page of the contract, under Core Authors, my name appeared first.Alessia Romano.I kept the surname because it was printed on my birth certificate. It had always belonged to me.When the trust review ended, my status as a lawful beneficiary was formally confirmed. Clara asked whether I wanted to claim a committee seat."Not right now," I said. "Keeping my rights doesn't mean I have to go back and live inside them."This time, no one could sign on my behalf. No one could call my refusal childish or

Three weeks later, Vittorio came to Edinburgh. He waited outside the research building beside a black Range Rover. There was more gray at his temples than I remembered. A year earlier, the sight of him waiting would have made me hurry over and apologize for keeping him outside.I didn't get in the car."We can talk in the cafe across the street," I said. "It's public, Clara knows you're here, and I'm recording. Those are the terms."His mouth tightened, but he followed me.We took a table near the counter. Vittorio removed his gloves and placed them beside a leather folder. "Elena is here too. She wants to see you.""I don't want to see her.""She's your mother."I met his eyes. "So we're admitting that now?"He sat back. "After the crash, you didn't recognize anyone. You fought the nurses and refused treatment. The doctors said you needed a story you could accept. When we told you we were kind people who had taken you in, you finally let us help.""So the first lie was for treatment.

Bianca sent me an encrypted folder. It contained forty-two old emails, medical reports from the crash, original files for projects I had completed after I turned fourteen, and an addendum to the family trust that no one had ever shown me.Three days after the accident, Elena had written to Marcus.[The doctors have confirmed severe long-term memory loss. Alessia doesn't recognize us or remember the estate.]A week later, she sent another message.[Bianca cannot cope with the possibility that the committee may favor the eldest daughter. Prepare an arrangement that leaves Alessia's legal identity unchanged while allowing her to believe she was adopted. It may need to last for years.]Marcus answered that he couldn't alter a state birth record. The story could only be maintained inside the family, which meant every informed employee would need to sign a confidentiality agreement. The final email came from Vittorio.[Then make her believe the Romano name was given to her out of charity. As

I met Nico Moretti in the cybersecurity lab.He was crouched in front of an open server rack, wrestling with a fiber connection, when I walked in for my first project meeting."You must be the first-year student who pushed the ownership model to ninety-seven percent accuracy," he said without looking up."And you must be the guy who shut down the test server and made me rerun four hours of work."He glanced over his shoulder and grinned. "Well, now that we've exchanged compliments, I guess we're acquainted."The Morettis and Romanos cooperated when money demanded it and watched each other the rest of the time. Nico's father had business ties to both sides, but Nico never asked about mine. He found bugs in my code, argued with my assumptions, and emailed before touching any data I had created. The first time he brought me hot chocolate, he tucked the receipt beneath the cup. "You get the next one.""You saved a receipt for three pounds?""I believe in clean accounting. Also, you're terr

Two weeks later, Bianca told me Elena had been hospitalized with stress-induced atrial fibrillation.[She woke up asking for you,] Bianca wrote. [The doctors say her heart rate is stable now, but she's scared.]Once, the slightest strain in Elena's voice would have sent me searching for something I had done wrong. Now I read the message twice and asked the only question that mattered.[Does she regret lying to me?]Bianca didn't answer for almost an hour. Then my phone rang.“How long have you known?” she asked the moment I picked up.“Since I went to the records office. I gave you a chance to tell me the truth after the gala.”Her breath caught. "I knew when I was eight. Mom sat me down after a committee dinner and said that if you learned you were their daughter too, the elders would fight over eldest-daughter succession.""You lied to me for ten years.""She said if I kept quiet, we'd always be a family. I was a kid, Alessia. I thought I was protecting us. Later, I didn't know how t

When my flight landed in Edinburgh, I connected my backup phone to the airport Wi-Fi. The family group chat loaded 186 unread messages.By midmorning, concern had curdled into accusation.[You frightened your sister.][Running away after everything we've done for you is beyond ungrateful.][Call me before your father gets involved.]Vittorio had sent only three.[Call me. Now.][I'll pull your departure record.][Come back before I find you, and we can pretend this never happened.]He didn't believe I could actually leave the Romanos. In his mind, the estate wasn't merely a home. It was the edge of the known world, and he had spent twelve years teaching me that one step beyond it meant falling. He froze the family credit card issued in my name and ordered security to check private airfields. He didn't know I had never used his card. I had taken a cab to JFK, paid for the ticket from my own account, and boarded a commercial flight with students, tourists, and a screaming toddler two row
