Chapter 1

Author: Hazel Lake
It felt as though an invisible hand had wrapped itself around my throat.

Only after a long while did I finally regain a shred of composure. My voice trembled as I asked, "Why?"

Why cheat on me, only to go register our marriage afterward? Why wait until the happiest moment of my life to cruelly tell me the truth?

Emily Adair stared at me for a second, stunned.

Then, she suddenly burst into loud laughter.

"Dylan, you won."

I looked at her blankly, unable to understand.

The next second, a familiar voice came through the car speakers.

"Then don't forget to wear the black stockings I bought you tonight."

My eyes widened in disbelief.

It felt as though every drop of blood in my body was slowly turning to ice.

"I made a bet with Dylan about how you'd react after finding out I cheated. I said you'd get angry and slap me. He said you'd only ask why. If I won, he'd use the scent I like. If he won…"

Emily smiled meaningfully.

"You heard it yourself, didn't you?"

As if answering her, Dylan James's voice sounded from the speakers again.

"Anthony, are you even a man? It's been five years. When your wife cheats on you, all you can do is ask why."

He paused before continuing, smug and venomous.

"But your taste in women is pretty good. I like this one too."

Their mocking laughter made my limbs go numb.

In a daze, I felt as though I'd been dragged back to five years ago.

I had cut my business trip short, planning to surprise my ex-wife, Jessica Lawrence, for her birthday.

But when I opened the door, I found Jessica and Dylan tangled together beside the bed.

The moment she saw me, Jessica panicked and scrambled to get dressed.

Dylan, however, lounged against the sofa and lit a cigarette with smug ease.

"Sorry, buddy. Being single for too long got lonely, so I borrowed your wife for a bit."

In an instant, my blood ran backward. I wanted nothing more than to stab him to death. But the moment I lifted my foot, all strength drained from my body, and I collapsed to one knee.

All I could do was ask them in despair, "Why?"

But as their mouths moved in explanation, it felt like my ears had been stuffed with cotton. I couldn't hear a single word.

It wasn't until blood began pouring from beneath Jessica, and she clutched my leg while begging for help, that I finally snapped back to my senses.

I carried her to the hospital as fast as I could, but we were still too late.

The doctor said their sex had been too rough, and Jessica's uterus was already too fragile. The baby couldn't be saved.

That night, I stood outside the hospital room and smoked until dawn, mourning my dead love, my ruined friendship… and my unborn child.

Emily did not catch up to me.But it was only a matter of seconds—no sooner had I gotten into the car than she rushed out the door. She chased after my vehicle for a long time. Only when she was completely exhausted did she finally stop, switching instead to calling my phone over and over again.I didn't answer.Yesterday, we had already gone to get the divorce certificate.I had told her that today we would hold the wedding first, then register the marriage afterward—double happiness in one day.She believed it, foolishly.I felt no joy in deceiving her—only an endless sense of emptiness. When I had lain on the operating table, ready to die, I heard the psychologist's voice urging me to live.During my therapy, my psychologist had already noticed my dependence on Emily and had gently warned me, but I refused to believe him.It was only on that operating table, hearing his words again in that moment between life and death, that everything changed. What made me choose life wa

During that time, because I insisted on rebuilding our emotional connection, we slept in separate rooms. Then one day, while Emily was working, I walked over holding a plate of sliced mangoes and gave her a big smile."Emily, I think I'm starting to remember things."She froze. Her face showed nothing—no joy, no fear."I remember you love mangoes. You used to call me every day after work and ask me to cut some up for you."It was like someone dumped a bucket of ice water over her head. Her blood ran cold. The one who loved mangoes was Jessica. What I was remembering… was my life with Jessica. When I saw she didn't answer, I frowned."Why aren't you eating? Did I remember wrong? I clearly remember my wife loving these. Unless… I have another wife?""Of course not!" Emily shot back. "It's me. I love mangoes. I just… I was so happy I didn't know how to react."To prove it was really her, she forced herself to eat the mangoes in big bites. Almost immediately, red rashes broke ou

A marriage certificate in that condition naturally didn't sit well with me.After "losing my memory", my temper got worse. I smashed everything I could get my hands on, my eyes red as I lashed out at her."You can't even keep our marriage certificate safe. You don't love me at all. I want a divorce."The word "divorce" sent Emily into a full panic. She dropped to her knees right there and started begging."It's my fault. We can get new ones. I'll take care of the replacements properly this time. Just trust me, okay?"In the end, after she got down on her knees more times than I could count and transferred me an eight-figure sum without a second thought, I finally agreed—on the day I was discharged—to go with her to reapply for the marriage certificate. When we got in the car, I chose the back seat.Remembering that I got motion sickness, Emily smiled and said, "Babe, did you forget you get carsick in the back?"I kept staring out the window without turning my head."I don't w

I woke up on the third day after surgery. The second Emily saw my eyes open—she'd been camped out by my bedside for three days and three nights straight—she shot up and started firing off questions."Anthony? You're awake? Are you okay? Does anything hurt?"I hesitated.Under the blanket, my hand slowly curled into a tight fist. After a moment, I shook my head and asked, quiet and curious,"Who are you?"Emily froze. Then a wave of relief washed over her so strong I could almost feel it.While she'd been waiting for me to wake up, she'd been rehearsing apologies and explanations in her head. She'd even gotten ready to chase me all over again. She never expected me to lose my memory. To forget everything. And yet… that gave her a second chance.Trying not to look too excited, she said carefully, "I'm your wife. We just got married last week. Our wedding was supposed to be at the end of this month."She paused awhile, then added, "But a few days ago, you went up on the roof

Emily's jealousy had completely consumed her. From that moment on, every single minute, every move I made, every word I said—it all felt like a provocation to her.The more she loved me, the more it hurt. The more it hurt, the more it turned into hatred. And Dylan kept feeding that fire, constantly whispering to her about my past with Jessica, baiting her with lines like:"Don't you think this is unfair?"You've loved Anthony for so long, but he only picked you as his second choice."If I were you, I'd definitely get even."The next message Dylan sent her was an address to a hotel. And unbelievably, Emily went.On her way home afterward, she still didn't forget to buy me my favorite dessert. She remembered my psychologist once saying that a moderate amount of sweets could help improve someone's mood.Watching me eat that cake with such a soft smile, Emily suddenly felt nothing but emptiness. Why? Why was she the only one suffering so deeply over me, while I stayed completely
