Chapter 1

I gazed into the mirror at the face staring back at me, far too young to look this haunted. The icy grip of the lake water still scorched my lungs, a chilling reminder of my past. My fingers brushed against my ghostly pale cheeks as my teeth chattered uncontrollably.

God gave me a second chance at life, and I was dead set on turning Sebastian Vitale's world upside down.

"Principessa," came a soft tap on the door, the voice of our head maid.

"Are you feeling okay? The banquet's about to kick off, and Don Caruso sent me to tell you to get ready to head down."

A banquet?

Right, Dad's big sixtieth birthday bash!

It was all going down today!

Sebastian, the broody outcast who had been mooching off the Caruso family for two years, was going to pop the question to Dad tonight, asking to tie the knot in front of everyone.

In my previous life, I was the girl behind the velvet curtains, eavesdropping on his every word, my heart racing like it was trying to escape my ribcage.

I actually believed that bashful boy, who could not even look me in the eye, had a thing for me.

Talk about a rookie mistake: a deadly one at that.

His heart belonged to Anna all along.

Anna, with her honey-blond hair that fell in soft waves, those downcast green eyes, and that whispery voice of hers–always there to help me get dressed or whatever.

When she took that dive into the lake, she was not alone. Sebastian's baby was with her.

A double tragedy.

What did Sebastian say when he gave me the same cold plunge?

Oh, right.

He spat out, "Your jealousy's like a venomous snake, Isabella, and it's killed the most innocent soul."

Well, in this life, I was going to show him what a real snake looked like. That was the plan, at least.

I took a deep breath, straightened my back, and descended the sweeping staircase to face the music at the banquet hall.

The Caruso family's clout was enough to bring together the city's big shots from both sides of the law to celebrate Don Salvatore Caruso's birthday bash.

The glow from the crystal chandeliers, the merry clinking of toasts, the deep chuckles of the men, and the swish of the women's skirts all mixed into an opulent symphony of power and riches.

I weaved through the crowd, soaking up the compliments and curious looks, all while keeping a stealthy eye on the entire scene.

At last, in the shadows by a column, I spotted Sebastian.

The party hit its peak when my father climbed onto a makeshift platform to give his thank-you speech.

As his last words hung in the air and the clapping dwindled, Sebastian made his move. He strode through the parting crowd and came face-to-face with my father.

Then, he dropped to one knee.

Silence swept through the hall, every single eye locked on the young man who had always been in the background.

"Don Caruso," Sebastian's voice was not loud, but it cut through the silence, firm and clear, "I'm forever in debt to you and the Caruso family for taking me in these past two years. I'll never forget this act of kindness."

My father's eyebrows lifted in a flicker of surprise, and he motioned for Sebastian to stand. "Sebastian, my boy, there's no need for such formality. Your mother was a dear friend of mine, and looking after you is the least I could do. Stand up and let's talk."

However, Sebastian stayed put, his head bowed even lower in a gesture of deep respect, yet there was a determined edge to it: "It's because I value your generosity so much that I've got the guts to ask for an even greater honor here today."

He paused, inhaled deeply, and pulled out a small parchment scroll from his jacket, lifting it high above his head.

"I, Sebastian Vitale, in the name of my mother's bloodline and the rest of my days, humbly ask you to grant me the privilege of marrying the Caruso family's...

"Miss Anna."

That was the moment everything clicked for me.

Sebastian was from the future, just like me.

After that night, Sebastian seemed to have disappeared from the city. There and then, rumors trickled in that he had fled to the lawless borderlands, trying to hook up with some dangerous arms dealers, dreaming of a violent comeback.Soon enough, word got around that he had been double-crossed in a deal, took a bullet to save a shipment, and ended up with a shattered leg. Lucky to be alive, but then a cripple. He dragged himself back, looking to hide out with the small-time crooks he used to look down on. However, his 'shining achievements' were the talk of the town, and nobody wanted to shelter this total washout and walking disaster. He could not even find a spot in the lowest rungs of the criminal ladder. The last anyone heard of Sebastian, he was a ghost of his former self, haunting the grimiest parts of the slums and docks. His clothes were rags, his leg a festering wound, and his mind a foggy mess. He clung to life in the filth, surviving on scraps and the pity of strangers.

The pain and the utter humiliation finally broke Sebastian's pride.Days later, he exploited his knowledge of the Caruso estate and squeezed through a forgotten hole in the fence, a relic of neglect. He stumbled onto the garden path where I was walking, a pitiful sight covered in mud and leaves.I froze, staring at the grimy figure that emerged from the shadows, almost unrecognizable. However, those eyes, wild with hate and insanity, were unforgettable.I watched him, my hand poised over the bell to call the guards, as he stumbled toward me.Then, with a heavy thud, he collapsed onto the gravel path at my feet."Isabella, I messed up, I really did!" He looked up, his face a mess of mud and tears, his eyes begging for mercy."I get it now… From the very start, it was you I loved! It was Anna, that imposter–she tricked me! She pulled the wool over my eyes, and I ended up hurting you, hurting the Caruso family!"I was clueless in my previous life, and in this life, she fooled me a

At that moment, a soft and soothing voice cut through the tension, "Principessa Isabella, Mrs. Vitale, let's keep things friendly at the party, shall we?"It was Carlo Lupo's youngest, Elena Lupo.In a family notorious for its rough edges and greed, Elena was the odd one out.She was a lover of books and art, a beacon of integrity and kindness, and she had even secretly supported a few orphanages. In a previous life, when Sebastian rose to power, he tried to get Lupos on his side, showering Elena with attention. However, she shot him down without a second thought, even telling him to his face to 'be a better husband.'When Sebastian turned on the Caruso family, Elena tried to offer what little shelter she could. Still, she failed to turn the tide.I gazed at Elena, haunted by the memory of her last look of helpless sorrow as she was taken from me in a previous life. I softened my fierce demeanor and offered her a warm, genuine smile. "You're absolutely right, Miss Elena. I was ou

Sebastian and Anna's wedding was thrown together so quickly, it was practically bare-bones.Anna's baby bump was showing, and time was ticking. Sebastian, after ticking off the Caruso family and being kicked to the curb by the Vitales over some nasty scandal, did not have a single family willing to show up for his big day.The wedding was a ghost town, held in a tiny chapel with just a priest and a handful of witnesses who were there for the cash.He was convinced my dad had a hand in his epic fall from grace. After the wedding, Sebastian could not stay away. He snuck into the Caruso place to confront me.He lurked in the shadows of the columns, out of the moon's reach, like a snake ready to strike."You think you can take me down like this, Isabella? You think I got to the top of the Vitale food chain in my previous life because of your family's handouts?"His voice was a low hiss, dripping with bitterness, "You're so wrong. I've got a few tricks you know nothing about. Just wa

Just like that, Anthony and I were set to be married. However, Sebastian–seizing a moment while I was out–found the chance to have a word with me."In a previous life, you were responsible for Anna's and her child's untimely deaths, and you've paid a heavy price for that. We're even now. In this life, if you leave Anna alone and keep out of trouble, I won't go after the Caruso family again."Sure, Anthony is a bit of a ladies' man, but he's a good match for you."Forget about me, be happy with him, and drop the evil schemes. Stop trying to mess with Anna."You humiliated her by exposing her pregnancy in front of everyone. I'm willing to let that slide because you helped me marry her. However, if you keep up these dirty tricks, don't expect me to play nice!"He stood there, looking down at me with that fierce look in his eyes, his gaze icy and unfeeling, just like when he watched me plead for my family's safety.Back then, he was the head of the Vitale family, not the outcast he

The second my words hung in the air, Sebastian–who had been trying to make a graceful exit–froze in his tracks. He released Anna's hand, spun, and marched straight toward me. The chill and anger in his eyes were no longer concealed."Isabella Caruso." Sebastian stood a mere step away, bending down to murmur in my ear."You're looking pretty smug, aren't you?" His voice was icy, laced with challenge and menace."You think you can ruin me just like that?""Ruin you?" I held his stare, cocked my head to the side, and replied with feigned innocence."Mr. Vitale, I'm just helping you out! You begged on bended knee, and I said yes. What's with the act now? Don't tell me, all those heartfelt promises were just for show? You don't really want to marry Anna? You don't want to step up? Or maybe…"I taunted, "You're just a thankless wolf, loving the drama, all thankful one minute and flipping the script the next?"A muscle in Sebastian's cheek twitched, with my words hitting a nerve. He
