Two days after being discharged from the hospital, Luna woke up feeling slightly better than she had the previous morning.

Her body was still weak, and the bruises had not completely faded, but at least she could move around without feeling like she might collapse. When she stepped out of her bedroom, the smell of freshly cooked food greeted her.

She stopped.

Marcus was in the kitchen.

He stood beside the stove, preparing the last part of breakfast as if he belonged there.Luna looked around the apartment and realized something else.

The place was clean.

The dishes that had been sitting in the sink were gone. The clothes she had left scattered around had been folded, and even the small living room had been tidied.

“You cleaned?” she asked.

Marcus glanced at her.

“You needed the rest.”

“And you decided to clean my entire apartment?”

“It wasn't exactly an entire apartment.”

Luna shook her head, but a small smile appeared on her face.

Marcus placed a plate on the table.

“Sit, let's get something in your belly.”

“Okayyyy….”.she sat down.

For a while, neither of them said much. Luna ate slowly while Marcus made sure she finished enough food.Afterward, he checked the time and picked up his jacket.

“I have to get back to the diner.”

Luna looked at him.

“You've already done enough,thank you.”Marcus shrugged.

“Just take care of yourself.”He walked toward the door.

“And don't try to do everything by yourself,” he added.

Luna gave him a tired smile.

“I'll try.”

Marcus opened the door.

“I'll come by later.”

Then he left.

Luna remained standing by the door for a few seconds after he was gone. She was grateful for him.More grateful than she could explain. But she also knew she couldn't depend on Marcus forever.

She returned to the living room and began slowly putting away the few things he had left out.She had barely finished when someone knocked on the door.

Luna frowned.

She wasn't expecting anyone. When she opened it, her landlord was standing outside.

His face was serious.

“Good afternoon,” Luna greeted politely.

He barely returned the greeting.

“I came to check on you.”

“I've been discharged.”

“I can see that.”His eyes moved around the apartment before returning to her.

“Your rent is due tomorrow”.Luna's expression changed. She had been so focused on recovering that she hadn't allowed herself to think about it.

“Tomorrow?”

“Yes.”

The landlord's voice was cold.

“I gave you enough time because you were in the hospital. I didn't come here to disturb you while you were sick.”

Luna lowered her gaze.

“I understand.”

“Now you're back home, so I need my money.”

She swallowed.

“I'll try to get it.”The man's expression hardened.

“Don't tell me you'll try. Tell me you'll pay.”

Luna didn't answer.

She knew the truth.

She didn't have the money. The hospital expenses was covered by Marcus her boss.

“I'll pay you,” she finally said. The landlord stared at her for a moment.

“I hope so.”He turned to leave but stopped at the doorway.

“I don't want to come here tomorrow and start moving your things outside.”

Luna's eyes widened.

“Please, sir. Give me a little more time if I can't get everything tomorrow.”

He turned back to her.

“I already gave you time.”His voice was completely unsympathetic.

“I have other tenants waiting for rooms. I can't keep holding a place for someone who can't pay.”

Luna felt her chest tighten.

“I understand.”

“Good.”

He walked away.Luna slowly closed the door, she leaned against it and shut her eyes.

Tomorrow.

She had until tomorrow. She walked to the small table in the living room and opened her purse. She counted the money she had left, then counted it again.

It wasn't enough.

Not even close.

Luna stared at the few bills in her hands, her heart sinking. If she couldn't find the rest of the money by tomorrow, she would lose the only place she had left.

She looked around the small apartment.

It wasn't much.

But it was home.

The thought of seeing her belongings thrown outside made her stomach twist. She picked up her phone and stared at Marcus's name.

He had already helped her so much.

Could she really ask him for money too?

Her thumb hovered over his name.

Then she slowly lowered the phone.

“No,” she whispered.

She couldn't keep depending on him.

But as the afternoon passed, one terrifying thought became impossible to ignore.

**Where was she going to get the rent before tomorrow?**

The next afternoon, Luna stood across the street from the new house. She had never seen it before. Her father had moved the family after everything that happened, and from the outside, the place looked nothing like the small home she remembered growing up in.It was bigger.Cleaner.Expensive.There was a new car parked in the driveway, and flowers lined the entrance.Luna stared at the house for a long moment. She was staying with Marcus now, but she couldn't stop thinking about what had happened. She had been taken to the hospital. She had nearly been left for dead. Her landlord had thrown her belongings into the rain. And not one person from her family had come looking for her.Not her father. Not Aurora. Not even her mother. She needed to know whether they had heard.Maybe they hadn't.Maybe someone had told them and they simply didn't care.Luna crossed the street. She walked up to the front door and knocked.A few seconds later, the door opened. Her mother stood there.Mrs. Vance st

Luna couldn't sleep. She lay on of Marcus's bed, wrapped tightly in the blanket he had given her earlier. The diner had closed hours ago, and the building was quiet. Marcus had told her she could use the bed for the night, but even though she was exhausted, sleep refused to come. Her mind kept replaying everything that had happened. The hospital. The landlord. Her belongings lying in the rain, And the apartment she no longer had.Luna turned onto her side and reached for her phone.Maybe scrolling would distract her.She opened social media. The first post that appeared on her screen made her stop breathing for a moment.Aurora.She was standing inside what looked like a luxury penthouse, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.Aurora wore a beautiful designer dress. Her hair was perfectly styled.A champagne glass rested in her hand. And beside her stood Ethan. The man who had once searched for his angel.Luna stared at the picture. The caption beneath it was simpl

The next morning, rain poured heavily over the city.Luna woke to the sound of water hitting the window. For a moment, she remained still, staring at the ceiling as she tried to convince herself that things would somehow get better. Her body was still sore from the accident, but she had no choice except to get up.She had barely finished washing her face when someone knocked hard on the door.Luna froze. The knocking came again. She slowly walked to the door and opened it.Her landlord stood outside, holding an umbrella. His expression was impatient.“Good morning,” Luna said quietly.“Your rent.”Luna's heart sank. She had known this conversation was coming, but hearing those words first thing in the morning still made her stomach twist.“I don't have it yet.”The landlord's face remained unchanged.“I told you yesterday. I need it today.”“I know. Please, just give me a little more time.”“There is no more time.”Luna stared at him.“I've already rented this apartment to someone else.

The footsteps stopped outside Luna's hospital room as she froze with her fingers tightened around the blanket as she stared at the door. She had no idea who could be coming to see her. After everything she went through in the alley before passing out and all she had just watched on television, she wasn't sure she wanted to see anyone.“What if they came back”.She whispered. Her eyes darted to the call button. Too far. She tried to reach it. Her left arm wouldn't move. The door handle turned. She squeezed her eyes shut. Please don't….The door opened."Luna?"Her eyes flew open.Marcus stood in the doorway. For a second, he just stared. Then relief flooded his face."You're awake."He hurried in."I'll get the doctor.""Marcus…” Luna called weakly. But he was already halfway out the door.Luna stared at the empty doorway. For three days, Luna drifted between sleep and darkness.Sometimes she heard voices around her. Sometimes she felt someone holding her hand. Other times, she heard Marcus telling her that she needed to wake up.But whenever she tried to open her eyes, everything slipped away again. On the fourth morning, Luna finally woke. Her eyes opened slowly.A white ceiling came into focus first, followed by white walls and the soft beeping of a machine beside her. For several seconds, she couldn't remember where she was. Then the pain came. Her head throbbed, her body felt weak, and when she tried to move her left hand, it barely responded. She frowned."What..."Her voice came out dry and weak. She swallowed and tried again."Where am I?"No one answered.Luna slowly turned her head. The room was empty.Marcus wasn't there. She tried to remember what had happened.
