" Clara!" I greet her with a smile. Of course, it's a fake one. I hate the woman before me with passion. I don't know what kind of a joke was the moon goddess playing to make her my brother's mate.
" You are finally home. I can't wait for us to bond again." Clara says with a sickly sweet smile which I respond with on my own.
" Me too. I'm looking forward to it." I reply, feigning enthusiasm.
I can't have anybody finding out about our past, not even Mason.
Looking at him gazing lovingly at her, I know that I have to make a sacrifice for him. Not to mention that Clara is heavily pregnant.
" Look at that, darling. I told you that our baby will Love Clara. Ofcourse, she's such a lovable girl. Who would not love her?" My mother said, nudging my father lovingly.
Seeing how happy the family is,I can only smile and mask my pain.
I help my mother to serve lunch and we all sit by the table, enjoying our lunch.
Having my family here with me, what else could I ask for.
Over the past years, food was never something I enjoyed. To me, it was more of a necessity. I only hate to keep living. Today for the first time in years, I was actually enjoying dining. All thanks to my family.
" Ruuuuuby!"
In the middle of our lunch, an excited voice blasted through the four corners of the dining room.
Seconds later, a racing Layla emerged forcing me on my feet.
There's no way I'll be waiting for that crazy woman to send me flying on the ground.
Bracing myself, I prepared myself to catch the woman who would definitely throw herself into my arms. But to my surprise, she halted millimetres away from me, making me release a breath I did not know I was holding.
" You really are a bad friend." The first words that leave her mouth are accusations
But she's right, I am a bad friend.
" Won't you give me a hug? It's been years." I say in an attempt to placate my friend.
" Since you asked for it so nicely, I'll be magnanimous enough and hug you." Layla replies.
I catch everyone at the table trying to stifle their laughter.
That's Layla for you. She brings happiness everywhere she goes.
" If Marcus did not tell me that you are back, I would never have known." Layla complains.
" Surprise!" I say excitedly but the lady simply shakes her head.
" Ladies, it's lunch time as you can see. Layla, join us for lunch. You girls can catch up later." My mother interrupts saving my ass.
It totally slipped my mind to inform Layla about my return, not like we have kept in touch while I stayed in the city.
" Thanks Aunt. Then, I will not stand in the ceremony." Layla replied enthusiastically, her earlier grievances all forgotten.
" Always a foodie." I whispered to myself but being a wolf, Layla heard it.
" Thanks for reminding me. I will make sure you have nothing left to eat." She says, a grin on her face.
Layla takes a seat opposite Mason.
I catch them occasionally looking at each other.
Five years ago, everybody in the pack was sure that Mason and Layla were mates. That was until the moon Goddess slapped a cruel card on them.
Mason found his mate and that mate was not Layla. A year later, Layla found her mate.
I was not there when all the saga happened but I could tell that there was bitterness between the two with how awkward lunch turned out to be.
I don't see a reason for them to be awkward with each other though, considering that each found their mate. If my guess is right, something happened between them. Since I cannot ask my brother about it, Layla will be the one to fill me in the details.
After lunch, Layla dragged me to my room.
Watching her, you could think that the room is actually hers and not mine.
" I know what you are thinking. Don't worry, your room is my room." Layla says immediately she locks the door.
I can only shake my head helplessly.
" Feels so good to be home." I say the words absentmindedly, gazing around the room which was still the same like five years ago.
" Yeah, home to finally face the skeletons in your closet." Layla retorts.
" When you say it that way, it sounds horrible." I smile nervously.
She is right though. It's about time I bury the past behind and start afresh.
" That's a fact you cannot erase. What do you plan to do?" Layla's question actually throws me off the hook.
What do I plan to do? Do I even have a plan?
" Honestly, I am clueless. I am still figuring out what to do next but one thing is for sure, I have to put a stop to all this madness and focus on my future." I replied.
I might not have a solid plan but I am sure about one thing, I will finish what was left undone five years ago.
" That's the way girl. Show that asshole that you are better off without him. Make him regret ever wronging you. You're a woman of talent and beauty and that should be known across all the land." Layla's words bring a smile to my face.
" Is he your sworn enemy and not your brother?" I ask, perplexed at how much anger her words carry.
" He is my brother, my blood but apart from that, nothing binds us together. On the other hand, I have you, my sworn sister."
That's what Layla and I are to each other. Sworn sisters. Our sisterly bond goes all the way back to when we were pups.
" Tell me, do you have a boyfriend?" Layla's question makes me choke on my saliva.
What the hell!
" Tsk, tsk, tsk. I can tell that you are still a virgin. Do you intend to die a virgin?" Layla asks, making me cough awkwardly.
She has always been a blunt person but doesn't she know that her bluntness can be embarrassing at times?
" I have been busy with studies and work. I don't have time for such stuff." I answer immediately.
Date? That never crossed my mind.
Getting rejected by the one chosen for you by the moon goddess, where could I get the confidence to date some other man from?
" Don't worry, you are here just in time. Today is Mason's birthday. We have a lot of handsome and eligible bachelors attending the party. Six pm,I'll be here to prepare you for your first day of suitor hunting." Layla said, her voice full of excitement.
" Suitor hunting?"
True to her words, Layla arrived exactly at six. The party will be kicking off from half past seven. Without knocking, Layla kicked the door open before sauntering with a smile plastered on her face making me scoff." It's hard to get rid of old habits," I comment and she giggles. That's Layla for you. The girl who would rather kick the door open than push it with her hands. The girl who would rather jump over the window than walk out through the door. She has always been someone who does what's not expected of her and gives no damn about it.I used to admire her in the past,I still do.While growing up, Layla was the kind of girl who would take no nonsense from anybody. The number of brawls she was involved in before we graduated from high school cannot be counted. On the other hand,I was that shy nerd who would endure anything. I would rather cry by the washrooms silently than confront my troubles.Growing up, I had to depend on Layla, Mason and Marcus to defend me.That's just how
The moment we step inside the Hall, the sight of men and women dressed to kill greets us.The room is parked with guests, as expected of a top business man's birthday celebration. My eyes did a quick survey around the room, probably looking for a certain someone. When my eyes landed on him, I could not control the clench in my heart. As expected, he had a woman in his arms. What was I expecting? That he would come here all by himself?Although I already came to a decision to move on, I can't help but feel bitter.' Pathetic, aren't you?' I can hear someone inwardly mocking me.I must be the most pathetic being to ever exist.I force my mind off him, deciding that he isn't worth my tears. My brother has no title in the pack. Although he is of Beta blood and had high chances of becoming the beta, he chose to follow our father's footsteps and took over the family company. He is the CEO of a multi- billionaire company. He has connections extending to all sides of the country and beyond.H
" Call me Ruby. Don't be so formal or I'll feel awkward." Having him call me miss Reid feels awkward. I prefer he uses my first name." Sure, you can also call me Logan. Just Logan. Let's forget about titles tonight and enjoy this dance." Logan proposed and I nodded in agreement. We danced with Logan and although my dancing skills were rusty, I managed to keep up with him. As we continued swaying to the music, I felt a piercing glare directed my way. Turning to look in the direction, I saw nothing. Everybody was busy doing their own thing. Shrugging off the feeling, I decided to concentrate on the man before me.It was easy actually, Just following his lead and I found myself enjoying it. The man had a great body, I was surprised I hadn't noticed that before. He wasn't a gym rat, but he looked as though he spent a lot of time on his feet. He is an Alpha after all so I did not expect any less." Do you have a mate?" Logan asked, making me tense for a moment.I shook my head. "No and ye
Shivers are sent down my spine as I fear to turn around, I’d recognize that heart piercing voice anywhere I hear it.I stand upright; without looking back, I give him a reply.“It’s been a while, hasn’t it?”“It sure has, little Ruby finally came back after 5 long years”“Little Ruby is no longer little, I see you still love your offensive remarks”I try my hardest to look strong in his presence but it just feels like my heart is caving in, I can’t even look at his face“my my, I guess that was disrespectful, I apologize. How have you been, mate?”His reflection in the mirror was as ugly as ever, I felt mocked by his terrorizing smile.“as you can see, Alpha; I’ve been rather good”I can’t take it anymore, I can’t pretend so I let myself be weak.“I’m stronger now, I’m better. All these years I’ve been trying to get over you but a part of me has been hoping you’d accept me when I come back”“Is that so? Honestly, I had long forgotten you. Couldn’t care less about you returning to the
Layla walks up to me and comforts me as I cry my heart out“Come on let's get you home”She offers a hand to get me off my knees and I take it.“I wish I never came here but how could I miss it? it’s my loving brother’s birthday”“I can’t believe he brought his rotten self here, he totally ruined the party. I apologize on his behalf”As I get up, she embraces me“I'll try to make sure he never comes close to you again, I promise”“Let's just go home; please take me home, Layla”Layla helps me on my feet and we exit the restroom, Marcus who stood outside the restroom eavesdropping on us, tried to leave as soon as the door opened but Layla stopped him.“There’s no need to run, we already knew you were outside the door. You’ve been like this since childhood”“okay okay you caught me, I’m sorry”There was a brief silence which was broken by the loud music at the party, followed by our laughter.“come on, I’ll drive you guys home”“ooh, you’re being such a gentleman today”“What do you me
Moon goddess:“What do you mean by I don’t wanna?”“I’m saying I don’t want to go”Layla tries her best to persuade me but I just don’t feel like doing anything“Please, I promise it’ll be fun”“Leave me alone, Layla!”I bury my head in my pillow and scream while kicking my legs against the bed“Would you calm down?”“Now you’re just being dramatic about it?”“It hurts so much, Layla. It really does”“I know it does and I’m sorry my brother acted like such an asshole to you”“I really don’t feel like going out tomorrow, please”Layla pauses for a moment, she doesn’t try to persuade me any further.“I understand, I’m sorry I sounded so selfish before”“It’s okay, I understand that you were just trying to make me happy”“Will you be okay?”“I’ll be fine”“Pinky swear?”“We’re not kids anymore, Layla”I feel reluctant but when I sit up and look at her face, I can’t help but do it. I intertwine my pinky finger with hers and promise.“I promise I’ll be fine, you don’t have to worry about m
Logan:I hear the sounds of birds singing, that’s something I haven’t heard in a really long time. Bright light graces the room from the windows, it’s morning.Layla is already wide awake making her bed, as she hums along to the birds.“It’s been a while since I had something like this; you know”“Having a sleepover?”“No, waking up to peace and the sound of birds singing”“Why though? You like quiet places, your house wasn’t like that?”“Not really, the city I schooled at was always rowdy and noisy. Large cars passing by the second and the sound of street music”“I see, well; you must be glad to be home”“I am, I really am. I just had a shitty day yesterday but I’m going to put all that behind me and enjoy my time here”“I’m glad to hear that”“So….. I should get home”“Aren’t you gonna stay for breakfast?”“I don’t really think I should”“Because of that stuff I said yesterday? I’m really sorry”“What are you talking about?”“I’m apologizing for upsetting you last night”“I’m not up
The Phone Rings:I exit the mall with Logan. He opens the door of his car for me and closes it after I get in.“You’re such a gentleman, Thank you”“I try to be”He laughs nervously and gets in the car. While he drives, my mind spaces out to the previous night. I keep thinking about how he asked me to be his mate, despite knowing that I got rejected by my mate.“Do you think it’s coincidental that we ran into each other?”The sound of his voice brings me out of my thinking.“I do, what else is it if not coincidence?”“Fate? I believe that nothing is random, everything that happens is supposed to happen”“Is that so? Interesting”The car pulls up to a small café not too far from the mall. He turns around to open the door for me again and I oblige.“Thank you”“It’s nothing”Logan’s smile is warm, whenever he smiles at me, my heart skipsHe opens the door of the café and gestures for me to go in, I go in and he follows right behind me.The café is a small and pretty place; the whole bui
