Jade’s POV.
So, my plan wasn’t working the way it was supposed to.
I thought coming home would be smooth. I mean, I knew Derrick was married. He tried so hard to keep that under wraps, but I knew. I also knew who he married, and that surprised me, I won’t lie.
But it didn’t matter in the end, because I knew Derrick. I’ve known that man since he was a boy. So, I was confident that upon my return, Derrick would see the errors of his ways and then divorce Kara without a second thought.
Then he would be mine again.
And Kara?
Kara would be the loser once again because no matter what she did, she would never ever be able to win against me.
Every time Kara found a reason to smile, I wanted to be the one to take it away from her.
At first, it was so easy. Everything was going according to plan. I knew from the get-go that whatever Derrick and Kara had was not built on a foundation of love. Maybe on Kara’s part, there was love. But Derrick? Derrick despised her. Maybe there had been love in the beginning, but that had died down.
I was certain that he hated her and couldn’t wait until he got rid of her.
It was pathetically easy to manipulate him. I didn’t even have to do much, just a nudge here and there, a simpering look and an unshed tear, and boom! He was always on my side, always seeing me in the light while placing Kara in the dark. Manipulation was my forte and Derrick was just like every other man.
But then Kara was hospitalized, and Derrick started to send his PA to check on Kara, all in secret. As if he still cared. I couldn’t afford to have his attention on her like that, so I devised a plan.
Again, it was so easy to stage a fall in my runaway event. I lost money because of the whole drama, but I could afford it. I wasn’t Kara after all, relying on Derrick for everything. Before the runaway, I called the paparazzi and hired them to be there at the event so they could tape the whole thing and send it to all the TV stations around the country. The shot of Derrick carrying me to his car was solid gold for them, and the paps were more than happy to do their job.
The photos and the footage cemented our ‘relationship’ further. Now, everyone in the country knew who I was and what I meant for Derrick. I was officially Derrick’s love interest, or even his girlfriend.
More than that, it made Derrick invite me into the home he shared with Kara. That was my ultimate victory.
But then, Derrick kept pulling back. The most we did was kiss, but with Kara around, he wouldn’t even let that get too far. He’d always have an excuse to pull back when the time came to take things further. No matter how subtly seductive I was trying to be, Derrick didn’t cross the line.
It made no sense. He was already cheating on her with me by kissing me and loving me. A married man who loved his wife wouldn’t do that. Hell, a married man who respected his wife wouldn’t do so either.
But Derrick did. He was adamant that whatever he and Kara had was dead, and that he couldn’t stand her. He said he didn’t love her. So, why was he suddenly shy to have his way with me?
And now I found him looking at necklaces for Kara. Because she needed to reflect on his status.
This was the same Kara who kicked him out of his own home just days ago, who he said he hated.
This wasn’t part of the plan. It felt like the plan was derailing before my very eyes.
Derrick told me about the trashy necklace that Kara was wearing, and I immediately knew what it was. I knew how much that necklace meant to Kara, and just like that, a plan formed in my mind.
While Kara showered, I snuck into her room. The necklace was there, laying on her nightstand, so it was easy to take it and wait until Kara came out.
When Kara came out of her bathroom, wrapped in a bathrobe, she immediately noticed me on the couch, casually toying with the pendant of her necklace, fingering the subtle cracks on the opal stone.
Instantly, Kara’s surprise turned to livid. Her face reddened, and I could see the smoke coming out of her ears.
“What the hell are you doing in here?!” she demanded, her voice a growl. “Who gave you the permission to break into my room and touch my things?”
“It’s not breaking unless the door is locked,” I pointed out with a smirk. “Besides, Derrick told me that I can go anywhere in this house, and considering how the villa belongs to him…”
I started to swing the necklace on my finger like a pendulum, and as I predicted, that irked Kara to no end. She lunged at me like a cat, and it was only too easy to let the necklace go and pretend that I’d only 'accidentally' dropped it.
“Oh, dear, I didn’t mean for that to happen,” I said drolly as Kara snatched the necklace from the ground and took a good look at it.
She gasped, her expression immediately shifting to heartbreak.
The pendant’s edge was chipped!
“You monster!” she spat through gritted teeth. “How could you!”
I laughed at her.
“I didn’t do anything Kara, it’s your own fault for having such an old, decrypt thing as a family heirloom,” I sneered at her, my heart erupting with joy at her anguish. Well, well, well, look who’s not smiling brightly anymore.
I moved closer to her, getting in her face and looming over her.
“You’re just like that necklace,” I said. “Chipping away and cracked. Cheap and broken.”
Slap!
My head snapped at the force of the blow, and I stumbled back. I honestly didn’t know Kara had it in her. My cheek smarted so much, warm under my palm as I brought my hand to my face, dazed.
Kara stood stock-still in front of me, eyes wide. It was as if she couldn’t believe she just hit me.
The door to Kara’s room burst open, and in ran Derrick, livid. He immediately clocked in what Kara had done and rushed to me, enveloping me in his arms, shielding me from his mean, mean wife, his lips already curled in a snarl.
“What’s wrong with you, you vicious woman!”
Kara’s POV'Kara, I forgot Jade’s gift. Get it to me ASAP!'Derrick’s text came in the evening, worded in such a way that I had no choice but to do as I was told. Normally, Derrick had his personal assistant do that, but apparently, Derrick tended to forget that. The demanding nature of the text made me mad, more than usual, and what he asked me to bring him humiliated. I was so done with him. Especially considering how I deliberately tried to get out of it. Derrick was even happier that I chose to stay behind.Because Jade Black would be there, hanging onto my husband's every word. Jade, Derrick's first love and college girlfriend, came back to town two weeks ago. Since then, Derrick has seldom been around our mansion, and every day he spent away, I knew exactly where he was and who he was with. The whole thing hurt, even though I tried to tell myself that it didn't matter. I tried for years to win Derrick's love before realizing that it was only a delusion. It was heartbreaking, b
Kara’s POVThere were mocking whispers all around me when I left the Ballroom.I wrapped my wound up by ripping up my own dress, which sucked, but I couldn’t bleed all over the hotel. Everyone glared at me as I left, probably thinking what a bad person I was.Everyone thought I was just another girl who was trying to seduce Derrick to have a go at his money. A gold digger. Derrick’s behavior did nothing to refute that, despite being married to me, even in secret. It took a toll, having so many people hating me, and having them think I was the worst person alive.I tried to be bold and stand up to myself, because I knew the truth. But with the marriage being a secret, there wasn’t much I could do.I got a taxi and went to the hospital, still wearing drenched clothes. The nurses at the hospital were kind enough to give me a spare pair of scrubs to wear home and dress my wound. These days, strangers treat me with more kindness than my so-called friends and family did.As I got my wound s
Kara’s POV.When I came home, it was still afternoon, and frankly, I was exhausted even though all I had done that day was get injured. So, without much thought, I decided that I deserved a break. I'd long since stopped trying to share a bed with Derrick and moved to a guest room where I could spend the night sleeping. So, after coming home, I went to my room, took my painkillers, and fell asleep, trying not to think about Derrick, Jade, and how much the whole thing hurt. But unfortunately, I couldn't sleep for long. "...it was completely unnecessary for her to make such a scene, when I asked her multiple times not to be such a nuisance, but does she listen?"It was Derrick, yelling his head off, and I knew that I couldn't just hide in my room to avoid him. He would actually burst into the room to harass me, and I didn't want him to taint the safety I found in my room. Of course, I could lock the door, but that would only lead to an escalation. Better to nip the bud then and ther
Derrick's POV.The way Kara just exploded took me aback.I was already feeling a little queasy about how much she was bleeding. I genuinely did not want to injure her that badly, but the broken glass was just there, and Kara, as usual, made me the worst person in existence with her attitude. I never got as mad as I was whenever she was around, opening her mouth and spitting things that nobody could find sane. So, Jade and I were both shocked by the blood when Kara yelled at us to get out. I've never seen her that furious, never heard her voice be that thunderous. Kara was a fierce woman who always stood up to herself, even when she was trying to win my heart. She never allowed herself to be disrespected unless she had no choice in it. I disliked her immensely, bordering on hate, but it was the truth. Kara was fiery and bold, with a cutting sense of humor that had started to get crueler throughout our marriage. Still, it surprised the hell out of me when she screamed at me like that
Kara’s POV."Ms. Hatchett, I have got to ask you a question, and I'd really appreciate it if you answered me honestly. For your own wellbeing," the nurse who was treating my hand said, and I looked at her in puzzlement. "Yes, of course."The nurse looked nervous. Although I was at the same hospital I went to for my ankle, the nurse was different."According to your record which we had to look at, you were here this morning for a serious wound, and your nurse mentioned an altercation in the corridor," the nurse said. "And now you're here again. So, Ms. Hatchett, I really have to ask you this. How is your home situation? Is your husband rough on you?" "What?!" I was taken aback. "I’m not married; Derrick’s not my husband." The nurse looked sad. "Well, hon, you came to the hospital twice a day, and you’re wounded with bruises on your wrist like someone grabbed it hard. That man seemed familiar with you and given his conduct...well, you really need to say something so we can get you ou
Kara’s POV.Derrick stared at me in horror, eyes wide with disbelief. It was the opposite of what I expected. I didn’t know he’d be shocked; I thought he’d be smug. I’d be giving what he wanted, anyway. The surprise only lasted a moment before Derrick grew livid. Within moments, he moved from across the room to right in front of me and grabbed my arm. His grip was hard as if it were made from steel, and the wrath in his eyes was frightening.“You have no right to demand a divorce from me,” he spat through gritted teeth, making spittle land on my face. “You’re going to stay by my side forever, and serve me until your pathetic, useless life ends, do you understand?!”His grip was too tight, and pain shot up from my wrist. Behind me, the nurse was panicking while Derrick’s assistant was doing her best to keep her from calling the police on us. “Let me go!” I demanded, trying not to yell. “Let me go, right now, Derrick, before I do something I regret.”“Something you regret? I’d love to
Derrick’s POV.“Who does that no-good gold-digger think she is?!” I shouted, kicking my desk chair as hard as I could. A shiver of savage pleasure ran through me as it went and hit the glass. I was so angry that I needed to hit something, and given the person I really wanted to unleash my anger on wasn’t there, I had to turn to the next best thing.Trashing my office.I swept everything spread on top of my work desk, feeling more relief when the sound of glass shattering registered in my ear. “Mr. Whitney, could you please calm down? We’re in the office building sir, everyone’s looking at us!” my assistant called from my door, where she was cowering, afraid to come in.“Shut up!” I snarled at her. “Do I look like I give a shit? Tell them to go back to work before I fire them all. I won’t hesitate, see if I do.”“Mr. Whitney, please-”“Get the hell lost!”My assistant made herself scarce. After trashing my office some more, wishing that everything I broke had Kara’s ungrateful face o
Kara’s POV.It took me three days to get out of the hospital, because they were worried about me having two different wounds on the same leg, which increases the chance of infection. It was quite sad that those three days were the first time since I married Derrick that I felt taken care of.And it was the first time in three years that I took a break from being a housewife. But after three days, it was over. While I wasn’t excited to go back to life with Derrick again, I was pretty tired of being bedridden and eating hospital food.Thankfully, though, Derrick’s assistant Theresa, came to see me almost daily. At first, I thought she was there under Derrick’s orders. In fact, she felt very guilty for letting Derrick treat me like he did, and she wanted to make amends. I didn’t really trust her, but Theresa never had a reason to dislike me, and Derrick treated her badly. Maybe she could relate to me in that manner. Maybe she was actually telling me the truth. Derrick’s POV. I didn’t think much when I offered to buy Kara a necklace. She was wearing an old necklace when she could have had a new one, so why shouldn’t I? It looked like something she picked up from a thrift store or a flea market. Something cheap that was made to look expensive. So, yes, I offered to buy her a new one out of the goodness of my own heart. But then Kara flinched as if my words broke her out of whatever reverie she was lost in, wide eyes glaring at me with disbelief.“No thanks,” she snapped, her voice arctic cold. She tucked the necklace into her blouse, looking away from me. “I’m perfectly happy with what I have. You can focus your gift-giving attention on Jade instead, I’m sure she’d love to have a new necklace or ten.”Typical. I offered to do something nice for her, and she’d snark about it and reject me. Sometimes, I wondered why I even tried.“Whatever, see if I offer again. Come on, we’re going home.”The car ride home was silent. Kara kept stubbornly loo
Kara’s POV.I will be the first person to admit that I was attractive. I had conventionally attractive features, nice eyes, and a slim body with curves at all the right places. I had good skin that didn’t break out too often, and hair that had volume and luster. When I told people that High school was hell for me, no one believed me. They thought I was just making things up to get people to feel sorry for me.But I had my glow up after I left High School for college. Back in High school, I was basically a plainer, acne-ridden version of Little Orphan Annie.I didn’t know how everyone in school knew I was an orphan, because I did everything in my power to act like that wasn’t the case. But I guess something didn’t add up, and the student body put two and two together and then realized that the loving home I went to after school was a foster home. The foster home wasn’t bad per se, but I didn’t have parents and that sucked.Kids were cruel, and every bully in high school picked on me al
Kara’s POV.In the end, Derrick won because I just didn’t want to fight with him for the rest of the day. So, after he ordered me to cook for him, he demanded that I bring the food to his office before leaving. I’ve never done that before, so I didn’t really know what the procedure was.So, even though my whole body hurt with exhaustion, and my leg wounds throbbed, I cooked, packed, and made my way to his company building right on time, determined not to give him the chance to find a fault.I thought it would be quick, and I wouldn’t even have to see Derrick. I was going to leave the food bag with the receptionist, who would send it to Derrick.Easy.“I’m sorry, are you from Uber EATS or something?” the receptionist asked, looking at me suspiciously. “You’re not in any sort of delivery uniform.”“I, uh,” I stammered, wondering what I was supposed to tell her. “Does it matter?”“Yes, of course it matters," the receptionist said, looking at me like I was crazy for thinking otherwise. “M
Kara’s POV.As soon as Derrick placed me on the bed, I pulled the blanket over my body, mortified. I wished that he and Jade would leave me to get dressed in peace, but that didn’t seem to be happening.Jade loudly demanded that she clean out the bathroom and make sure I hadn’t broken any glass, and she removed herself from the bedroom for a moment.Derrick, however, did not make that much sense.“You’re so careless!” Derrick went on nagging as if he hadn’t just hauled my naked butt out of the bathroom right in front of his girlfriend. His arms were crossed as he stood next to my bed, pointedly not meeting my eyes. “Always damaging things everywhere. I might have plenty of money but that doesn’t mean I enjoy fixing things after you. First that pond, then the plates, and now this! You know, I’m starting to think that this is a childish ploy of yours to get my attention?”I gritted my teeth, refusing to answer. I desperately wished that I could towel myself off because I hated getting
Kara’s POV.“Oh, I just feel awful now, Derrick,” Jade told Derrick right outside my door as I rearranged my room from bottom to top. “I didn’t know it was her room; I would never have taken anything that was hers without asking her. I’ve never done so! Can you please make her understand how sorry I am?”If I rolled my eyes one more time, I would lose them somewhere in my brain. She sure didn’t seem sorry when she was reading through my journal. After I put my foot down and demanded my room back, Derrick had no choice but to yield. Derrick had then taken Jade out to show her the gardens while I managed to move my belongings back to my room in peace. Unfortunately, they didn’t stay outside for long.“It’s okay, Jade,” Derrick said, voice low and soothing, tender. It was a tone that was only reserved for Jade. “It’s not your fault, and I thought she’d be a good sport about it, not blow her top.”“Still, I just feel so bad.”“You said sorry once, Jade, now it’s her job to be a decent per
Kara’s POV.I hoped that Derrick would be away with Jade when I came home, so I could have a few moments of peace. So, imagine my surprise when I walked into the living room of our villa and discovered that the living room was trashed. My clothes, shoes, makeup, skin-care products, books, and jewelry were all over the place, haphazardly placed on the couches, chairs, and even the floor, along with various boxes that held everything from my life before marriage, including my art products and physical art.Almost everything that had been in my room when I left for the hospital, except for the few art pieces I dared to hang on the walls, was all there. As soon as I realized this, every nerve ending in my body lit up in anger. Only two people lived in this villa, and that was me and Derrick. So, if I hadn’t done this, Derrick had. What had he done?! Why had he cleared my room? Was this his way of telling me to get out because I told him that I’d divorce him?!I stormed to my bedroom, hopi
Derrick’s POV.In the solitude and safety of my car, I leaned back and massaged my temples, trying to stave off the incoming headache. I barely made it past the paparazzi who ambushed me when I left the runway event with Jade in tow, and of course, the news of my stunt spread to my family even before it did to the local news.On my phone, my grandmother was screaming in my ear, demanding that I apologize to Kara of all people about my ‘disgraceful conduct’.“A marriage is a marriage regardless of the circumstances surrounding it, and I will not have a grandson of mine cheating on his wife with some model, especially one that tainted our family name like Jade Black did!”“Grandma, it’s not like that,” I tried to argue. “Jade’s my friend, I was only helping her.”“That is not what friendship looks like, Derrick. Even an old woman like me with vision problems can see it, much less this entire nation! Have you seen what the news is saying? You’re breaking that poor girl’s heart! I never t
