Celene

The journey back out of the witch's apartment was quiet, Christoff walked ahead of me his shoulders tensed and his lips pursed.

I stole glances at him every other second, wanting to talk but his furrowed brows told me all I needed to, he wasn't ready so I kept quiet too.

I used the opportunity to think about the witch's words. “The fate of your people rests on your shoulders.”

I couldn't say I didn't understand, but her words didn't motivate me as it should have. The fate of people who were willing to lunch me at the slightest inconvenience did nothing to soothe my anger. Was I supposed to forget their cruelty towards me, towards my mother who was nothing but kind to them? I didn't think that was possible, but her words continued to play out in my mind, reminding me that there were innocent people hurt by Valerie's actions.

I saw what she did to Violet Pack, how her ruling had turned a once flourishing pack into one filled with crime, where the only reasonable explanation f

Chapter 140Celene“This place is tiny!” Christoff mused, he stood before me, dressed in practical clothing and with two packed bags beside him, his lips tugged into a smirk, “Did you like my present–”Without waiting for him to finish his sentence, I walked over stopping inches away, and grabbed his collars “What the heck are you doing here?”His look of amusement dulled, and he tilted his head, “What do you mean?”“What do I mean?” I asked incredulously, reaching for the back of my head, as I paced, “What the heck kind of stunts are you playing Christoff? First, you tell me to lay low, and the next thing you are taking paid vacations in my name? Who fricking does that?”His eyes flashed with understanding and he had the galls to look guilty, but only for a little while, “ I'm sorry… I didn't think, I thought it would have been better instead of sneaking out and losing your job?”His answer struck me, sending a pang of guilt through my chest. All my words of admonishment fade away as

139Celene’s POV“What are you saying, Celene?” Christoffer's shocked voice cut through my next words, his hands gripping the edge of the table as his eyes darted through the dispirited crowd.“I'm telling you to join hands with me to overthrow the Luna, Christoff—” He placed his hands on my lips before I could finish my sentence his eyes widened, and he shushed me, “Are you crazy?” He asked leaning towards me, his voice barely above a whisper, “Lower your voice damn it someone could hear you!”A slight trace of annoyance washes through me. I never knew Christoff was a coward, his actions left a sour taste in my mouth, or was it his hands placed on my lips? With a grimace, I pulled away from his hands, before sipping from my cup of now-cold coffee.“I'm serious Christoff.” “And so am I!” He countered eyeing me, with a frown, “When you told me to prove myself I didn't think it would have to do with treason?”I tilted my chin, rising to meet his gaze, “Why? You afraid of Valerie ?”H

Chapter 138Mondrian Ella’s head snapped up, her breath hitching. “What?”I looked away, staring at the weathered stone floor. “I've been cursed. My time is running out.”For the first time since I had known her, Ella’s face crumpled. Not in anger, nor resentment, but in something closer to regret, and she shuffled closer, as close as the bar would allow.“Mondrian…”I smiled, but there was no warmth in it. “You can't tell anyone?” I warned. She stood back before looking around, “who would I tell? The walks?”I chuckled at her actions, and she smiled, before her expression hardened, “How long do you have?”"Two weeks." My voice cracked, the weight of its severity weighing on me and I laughed, “Funny, isn’t it? All this time, I thought I could achieve something, I could get her to love me, and undo this curse. And now… none of it matters, she's gone.”Ella’s eyes shimmered with unshed tears. “It matters,” she whispered.” Does Celene know?”I shook my head, and she sighed, “Why didn't

Chapter 137Mondrian’s POVThe door burst open, slamming against the stone walls. My eyes moved away from my conversation with Zara and zeroed in on the interruption.A soldier stood at attention, his face tensed with urgency.“Alpha,” he said, his breath labored. “What is it” I growled, his urgency rubbed off on me, "You better have a good reason for barging in like that Afael.”"I'm Sorry Sir." He panted, placing an arm on his beating chest, “It's about Lady Pecan sure, she escaped.”I straightened, my fingers tightening around the edge of my desk. “What do you mean she escaped? Escaped where?”The soldier shuffled, clenching his teeth, “She somehow found out that I was sent to bring her in for questioning.”“How?” I asked genuinely confused, “What would she gain from running away? Did you tell her the reason for the questioning?”Before Afael could answer,Zara scoffed, before pushing herself away from the couch she had been lounging in. “Does that matter? The fact that she ran ju

136CeleneThe room grew deathly quiet at my outburst, luckily enough there were only a few patrons at the very moment. But their curiosity surged, their blatant stares poking into my skin. But I ignored them all, every curious stare thrown my way. I didn’t care. I was far too hurt to think of the circumstances or be ashamed.Right now, all I cared about was getting answers.Slapping my arms on the table, I repeated, “Why did you save me, Christoff? Why didn't you let her see me?” I demanded, my voice sharp. “What is your motive? Or are you trying to play a saint, because I'm warning you—”He waved his arms, interrupting me” Of course not! I'm not trying to play at anything.” His other hand rubbed furiously at his stained shirt, and with a soft sigh, he gave it up.The shirt was ruined, and I didn't care. He raised his head and his eyes met mine, his expression a mixture of guilt and exhaustion.“That's not it Celene, I swear. I just wanted–”“Wanted to what?” I scoffed, falling back

135Celene's povI stood frozen, my heart pounding in my chest. Christoff had seen me. Recognized me. My disguise was gone, and now, of all people, Luna Valerie was making her way toward us.Panic threatened to take hold. If Valerie realized who I was, she wouldn’t hesitate to imprison me or worse kill me.I know I told Alpha Daniel I was ready to take her on, but that didn't mean, I was stupid enough to not know when to pick my battles.Christoff moved before I could. He turned to the Luna with a charming smile, stepping in her path.“Luna Valerie,” he greeted smoothly, positioning himself between us.I swallowed hard, taking the moment of distraction to steady myself. With trembling fingers, I pulled out the can of masking spray, fixing the illusion over my face once more.I had barely finished when, Valerie’s cold eyes landed on me, suspicion flickering across her features. “Who is this?” she asked, her voice dripping with disdain, before answering her question. “Another one of yo

134Celene's POVI sprung away from his touch as though I'd been burned. Which was pretty accurate. After everything Christoff had done, being burnt was putting it mildly.Steeling my expression into a soft smile I thank him quietly my eyes searching wildly for a means to escape."Are you okay?" He asked, staring at me with a furrowed brow. "Yes. I'm fine" I quickly said, deepening my voice to mask my real tone. I heaved a soft sigh of relief, Grateful that the masking spray was still in effect I couldn't have anyone finding out it was me, especially not Christoff.Christoff backed away from me his hand firmly placed on my arm, holding me in place. "Thank you for your help" I repeated, pulling my arms away from his hold, my heart pounding as he held firm, his eyes pinning me in place. My palms grew sweaty at his staring and I broke into a nervous laughter, “I'm sorry, you are hurting me.”Christoff immediately backed away letting me go, “I'm sorry, it's just you look so familiar, ye

133CelenePlaying it cool I rolled my eyes, crossed my arms, and leaned back, "When has Valerie not been involved in a bad situation? After everything she has done her heart is darker than black.”Father shook his head, his brows scrunched with worry, “No I don't think you understand Celene. There's something far darker than just human nature. Will you believe that not once since we've been mated have I ever seen her wolf?”I frowned at his words, “That's impossible.” I muttered, “How did you get her pregnant?”Alpha Daniel sighed, his shoulders dropped, “*I don't know. I want to say I was drugged, but I feel I've given so many excuses I cannot help but feel inadequate. Would you have believed me If I told you from the very beginning?”He shook his head, answering his question, “Valerie is darkness herself. That is why I fear for you, Celene. For what would happen to you when your presence is discovered in the pack.”My jaw tightened, “Then we fight. I'm done hiding away like some cr
