Celene

Mondrain hesitated, his eyes flickering towards the door as though searching for a means of escape.

“Mondrian?” I called, squeezing his hands, “You can tell me anything. You know that. I'm always here for you.”

He sighed, “the bleeding. It started from the very beginning. Since I woke up, that is. Combined with headaches, blurry visions, and pain. So much pain. I could barely feel it at first but over time it grew worse.”

I gasped, hurt, “And you didn't tell me?”

How could he keep this secret from me?

“I didn't want to worry you.” He squeezed my fingers, “You’ve done so much for me, been through so much. I didn't think it was right to burden you with such a silly problem, not when I thought I could handle the pain.”

“So much for handling the pain.” I scoffed, giving him a sideways glare.

Mondrian had the cheek to look guilty, his eyes downcast, “ I'm sorry”

“Why do you think it's happening?” I asked trying to distract myself from the hurt.

“It might be the curse.” he sugg

206Celene Tears spilled down my cheeks before I could stop them and I woke up with a sharp gasp.It had been a dream. All of it the wonderfully memeroty slowly faded into the depths of my mind as reality hit me fast.My body ached—mentally and physically, from hours of struggling against the collar. My fingers were raw, my collarbone bruised, but I hadn't stopped, not until sleep had taken me away and fate had played such a cruel joke on me.I wanted to scream to cry, but I froze when I felt it. Hands touching me, lifting me.No. Disgust churned within my guts, and I thrashed, instinctively. My hands waving, my feet kicking. I didn't care who it hurt.“Get your hands off me!” I screamed, kicking blindly, but the arms around me only tightened.“Relax, Celene,” Christoff’s voice slid over me like oil. “You were sleeping on the floor. I thought I’d do something nice.”The feeling overwhelmed me, my chest tightened and I struggled harder. “Nice? You wouldn't know what that is if it sla

205Celene“Get it off me!” I cried jerking awake, my hands reaching for my neck, searching for the metal collar that was no longer there.Confused I pulled away from the Mattrass my eyes searching round me, at the familiar yet unfamiliar room. Where was I?The room draped with red cotton and brown accent was far different from the room, Christoff had left me in a few hours ago, soft light poured from a window that wasn't barricaded, before I could figure out why it looked familiar the door pushed open and Mondrian walked in.Tall, broad, and real, his golden eyes widened slightly at the sight of me, then filled with a hunger, that took my breath away. “You are awake.” He smiled, dropping the tray he held, before covering the distance between us in two long strides, and pulling me into his arms, “I've missed you.”“Mondrian?” I breathed, leaning into his strong arms, his scent calm and soothing as I wondered what was happening. What about the war? Christoff? How did I even get here?

204Mondrian“Stop acting like a coward and save my sister or else don't blame me if I take action.”Ella’s words haunted me long after she stormed off. I stood there on the stairs like a fool, watching the space she had occupied a few minutes ago. Clenching my fists and trying not to rip the walls apart. Her words rang true, Ella was right about everything. I was a coward. That could explain why I continued to allow the elders to decide on my next course of action. Although I had promised Alex to stand down for the next two days. Day one was on its last leg and there was no real change. I feared the elders would continue to delay.I turned on my heels Dragging my heavy steps away from the halls and towards my office. I didn't have the strength to listen to any more overestimated garbage from men who believed their words to hold water.I didn't have it in me, not to throw a punch, not when Ella's words had rubbed off on all the places that hurt, and images of Arlen's hurt expression

203MondrianThe Grand Hall now turned war room buzzed with voices, many confident, some cautious, and a few in between throwing shade at every other word, yet none of them gave me what I truly needed to hear. I stood at the head of the table, surrounded by warriors, advisors, and a few elders who looked like they weren't sure of motion.“I see no reason why we have to fight a battle so beneath us,” An elder muttered, tapping the table with a knotted finger. “Violet pack has given us nothing but trouble from the beginning. I say we send their Alpha back with a few men and be done with it. There's no need to put the lives of our men in danger.”“How can you sit there and say that after all the Process Celene has done for this pack? Never mind her saving our king, what about the ceaseless efforts she'd put into fortifying the kingdom during the sleepless nights.” A female elder growled.“I didn't say we aren't grateful. That's why I suggested we give them a couple of soldiers and let t

202ChristoffI was in the middle of a meeting, with Vern my beta, and a few key warriors when she walked in. Dressed in a tight-fit dress that clung to her body leaving nothing to the imagination she strutted into the room like a queen basking in her people's admiration. She ignored the looks of my men, stepping further into the room until she dropped into one of the chairs as though it was her right.Pecan doesn't seem pressured by the look of disapproval shot at her, her bare shoulders, free of any tension. Her blood red lips tugged into a smile and her cat-like eye pinned on me, “Alpha Christoff, how goes the torture.” She drawled, placing her chin on her hands, “Having fun?”I signaled for the men to Escape us, and watched as they filed out of the room except for Vern, my Beta.“Fun?” I repeated, leaning back in my chair, my fingers toying with my staff's mantle, “You can say that again.” I chuckled, pinning her with a deliberate smile, “I guess I should thank you for a job well

201CelineChristoff screamed, raw and guttural as though in pain. He grabbed his head, his finger digging into the rotten flesh.“You are lying. I won't believe you. You are lying to me.” Then without any notice he rushed at me, grabbing at the edge of my gown, “ Fix me, why won't you fix me.”I blinked looking down on the raging man. “You’re pathetic.” I spat, “There's nothing to fix, but your character. Only when you repent of your evils will your face go back to its original.”Christoff's eyes widened, and he spat through gritted teeth, “I have done no evil. I am free of sin.”I stared at him squarely, “then you will remain this way. Your skin rotten till it consumes you.”Before I could finish my words, I felt a sharp sting on my cheeks, the force sent me sprawling to my knees.Christoff chuckled darkly, his eyes twinkling with amusement, “Not if I have anything to say about it.”I shuffled away from him, hating the way his eyes grazed through my body. He followed, slowly, coldl
