Mondrian

“Well, what is it.” The door to the meeting hall, flew open as I strode into the room, Pecan hard on my tail, with a sharp turn I faced her, “What was so important Pecan you had to drag me out of my outing?”

Pecan's eyes widened at my no-nonsense tone, her lips trembled as though I'd wronged her before throwing a harsh glare at me, her arms folded, “Like I said Alpha Mondrian, it involves the pack well well-being which is also very important .”

The air in the room turned tense, charged with the kind of energy that made one stand still, and so was the case for Alex and Arlen as they stared at us with shocked expressions.

“Did I say it wasn't, Pecan? Isn't that why I hired you and the rest of the cabinet to make sure the pack runs in the right order.” I growled not liking the tone she was using at me, “ What gives you the right to—”

“Everything gives me the Right Alpha!” She interrupted. “While you were out of town sucking faces and playing house with your so-called m

At least until we've gotten a hold of the situation.”Alex shook his head, “There's nothing we can do. Until Mondrian is fully healed and you are strong enough. The council will not support either going into battle.”Zara huffed, “Alex is right. The council is still wary of the King. If he makes any sudden decisions that don't align with them. They could believe he is under your hold.”“What do I care what they think? I am still their king.” Mondrian growled.“That's true, but the people are still in shock. They need time to get used to your awakening.”Mondrian moved to argue but I shook my head, stopping him from arguing.“I don't want to cause any problems between you and your people. Why don't we talk to him? Maybe he'll listen to you.”“I doubt that.” Alex snorted, “But it's all we have.”I nodded. “We have to try. Before it is too late.”“When do you suggest Mondrian talks

186CeleneThe moment my father told me of his plans my head started to ring, warning bells echoed all over and my hands shook.Without a moment to spare, I jumped up from my seat, my hands clenched into fists. “Father you can't be serious. It is dangerous. Christoff has completely taken over.”“That is all the more reason to go back, Celene. I can't keep hiding here. I have to bring hope to my people.” He sighed, sipping a cup of tea.“To your death you mean!” I snapped, stepping away from the table, “You've heard the news, Christoff has taken over. Valerie's staff is in his hands.”“I'm aware child. It changes nothing.” Alpha Daniel calmly said, reaching out to hold me, “Try to understand. I and your mother had worked so hard to create Violet Pack letting the people suffer is unfair. I must do something.”“Even if it spells death?” I pulled my hands away from his hold, annoyed at his words. Where was this conviction when I was being mistreated, when Valerie had taken hold of the pa

185Celene After Alex's words, the four of us had fallen into deep silence each of us thrown into the depths of our thoughts. When a consensus couldn't be reached, Mondrian finally broke the silence, with a sigh, “I'm sure everybody is tired how about we all take a break and revisit the issue later in the day?”Th the trio didn't object, together they filed out of Mondrian's room, at his behest and guidance with the promise of revisiting when everything was calm, leaving me alone with my mate. The moment the door shut behind Arlen, Mondrian turned to me pulling me in for a deep kiss, taking my breath away. When he finally released me, my vision grew blurry, my chest heaved with the strain, but my lips tugged in a wide smile, “What was that for?”He shrugged, nuzzling the gap in my neck, “Nothing, just wanted you to think of me, instead of whatever it is that was putting a frown on your face.”“And what makes you think I am no longer thinking about it?”He stared, his eyes wide with a

184Celene Alex looked to Mondrain as if to ask for the go-ahead, Mondrian nodded softly, his arms wrapped around me, his nose nuzzling my neck.Although I found it inappropriate at the moment I couldn't bring myself to question his actions. We had spent so long denying our feelings for each other, blinded by betrayals, thoughts of revenge, and even pride, it had taken a kidnapping, an almost marriage, and death before we could confess.I could understand his clinginess. With a soft sigh, I leaned into his hold letting Alex's report filter through my mind.“After your return, and you fell ill, some of our spies reported Christoff's returns to the pack. Some speculated that he never left.”“And the staff?” I asked, with bated breath, Valerie's staff was a dangerous weapon, it had been a regret of mine that I hadn't managed to destroy it before we escaped.Alex frowned, his voice deepened, “Reports reveal he is still with the staff. Although there have been rumors that he has started

183Celene The conversation I had with Mondrian had been the right course of action. Mondrian's words, although crass and unapologetic had a soothing effect on me, it felt as though a burden had been lifted off my chest.I pulled away from my window, walking further into my room. Since returning I hadn't had time to look around but from the look of things it had been very well taken care of. A small smile graced my lips at the thought of Mondrian ordering the maids to clean despite my absence. It sent a jolt of warmth down my chest making me giddy. The memory of our last conversation replayed in my head, his words of love and promise, reminding me that I had done the right thing.“I can't promise not to sacrifice myself, if there's is even a single hope that it might save you, Celene.” He said, brushing the tendrils off my face.Alex's expression had darkened at his words, Arlen looked stricken, and Zara looked ready to jump him if she could get away with it, but they held back waiti

182 Mondrian The moment Alex reported Christoffs progress my blood boiled with rage. “That's impossible,” I objected, “I saw his body crumble under my fist, and Celene's power struck him square in the chest he should be dead.” Alex sighed, “That is what we thought in the beginning, we made plans to return after Celene was stable but our spies report that Christoff took over the pack the moment we stepped out, using his hidden Mercenaries and warriors loyal to him to subdue the people.” “What about the people? Did they not object to his rule? According to the laws of their pack, Christoff cannot be Alpha, he is neither a direct descendant nor mated to one does he have the authority to rule.” “They refused at first, rumours had spread of his actions towards the people, his cowardice and cunning against Celene and the Alpha, and the people had refused him as king, but he resorted to sorcery. Valerie's staff is still in his possession.” “Now that Christoff has declared himself Alph
