Chapter 3

작가: Perfect Timing
I hurried into the front yard. I already tried very hard to be quiet, but Grandma still had a stormy expression on her face when she woke up. "So much noise this early in the morning. Are you jealous of Mia and trying to keep her from having a good sleep when she is home for a change?"

She kept her voice low, but her eyes were full of spite. When she saw that I hadn't finished making breakfast, she grabbed my hair in anger. "And you slacked off? What time did you even get up this morning?"

I endured the pain and whispered an apology. "I'm sorry, Grandma. I'm sorry. I'll finish right away..."

I didn't dare give the two strangers too much food with her watching me. Even so, her hand still slapped me across my face. "You lazy and greedy good-for-nothing. Go back to the shed and stop wandering around in front of your sister."

I lowered my head and left quickly, terrified that the next strike would be even more painful.

Back in the shed, Emma stood up as soon as she saw me, and her eyes fixed on the fading red mark on my face. "Someone hit you?"

Zayne didn't speak, but his expression darkened.

I pretended I didn't hear it as I brought in a small stool from outside, then set a bowl of oats on it. "Breakfast. Split it. I have work to do."

Emma grabbed my wrist quickly. "Then what about you? You're not eating?"

"I ate." But the moment I lied, my stomach started to growl.

"She didn't eat last night either," Zayne said suddenly, his dark eyes fixed on me.

"They abuse you?" Emma frowned.

They were about to say more when Grandma shrieked from outside, "Hazel Sand! Where did you run off to?! Get over here and get to work!"

I rushed out as I said, "Eat it all. If you waste it, I'll get scolded again."

In the courtyard, Grandma had already grabbed two chickens with her bare hands.

On normal days, she would count every egg and hide them, afraid I would steal even one. Now that Mia was back, she casually decided to kill two chickens for her.

"Chicken soup is nutritious and especially good for a growing girl. We can eat one, and you can take the other one back to the city," she said as she smiled warmly at my parents, almost as though she had forgotten I was a growing girl, too.

"Go, slaughter the chicken." She shoved the knife into my hand. The cold metal against my skin made me flinch on instinct.

"What are you standing there for? Getting lazy again?!" Grandma kicked me in the back. I stumbled, and the blade of the knife sliced my hand and tore across the chicken's throat. Blood sprayed up and covered my face.

Blood poured from my hand, too, but I had not even considered treating it yet when my grandma saw my bleeding hand and screamed, "Go away! You can't even do something like this right. Your blood is so filthy... You did that on purpose, didn't you?! Forget about lunch today!"

I was shoved back into the shed in a daze, shivering all the way.

Emma had already heard everything that happened outside, and she had been watching through the crack in the door. She scrambled over to bandage me, and when she held my wrist, she froze.

My arm was so thin it was almost all bone. My hands were dark and rough, covered in hard skin and cracks from frostbite.

Outside, I heard my parents and Mia's voices.

"The snow on the mountain is so pretty! I want to take pictures!"

"Okay, but you have to dress warmly, or you'll catch a cold."

"Where is Big Sis? She's always up the mountain. Let her guide us."

"What's the point? That kid isn't close to us. Bringing her along just makes things awkward."

Emma's face sank.

"Are they really your parents?"

"Probably," I muttered as I walked out again mechanically.

After I finished the day's work, I snuck a little food out for the two people in the shed.

That night, Emma refused to sleep on the bed with Zayne. She lay on the floor with me instead.

She touched my forehead, and her face went pale. I was burning up. She quickly took off her jacket and wrapped me in it.

Warmth and a clean scent I had never known enveloped me whole.

I froze for a second, but the tears came first.

I wanted to call out 'Mom', but I forced it back down.

Maybe it was the fever, but even my heart felt warm that night.

When I woke up the next day, the sky was already bright.

Grandma was cursing in the courtyard, and I jolted upright in reflex. "I overslept! No, I..."

Emma and Zayne heard it too and reached for me, but I was already stumbling outside. I fell hard at Grandma's feet. "You filthy little thing! You're getting lazier by the day! Oh, were you busy taking care of that trouble in the shed? You would rather take care of that outsider instead of your own family?!"

She grabbed my hair as she laughed with anger and dragged me away. With her other hand, she snatched up the iron shovel nearby and slammed it into my back. I curled into a ball from the pain, gasping even as I shook.

"It's so boring, Grandma. I want to build a snowman," Mia said, speaking as though she didn't see Grandma beating me. Her eyes shifted, and she then pointed at me. "Let Big Sis be the snowman!"

She scooped up a ball of snow and smeared it across my face, then called sweetly toward my parents. "Mom, Dad, come play too!"

My parents walked over, ignoring me on the ground where I was dying, and gently helped Mia put on her gloves. "Be careful. Don't catch a cold."

Mia giggled and shoveled snow onto me. Ice slid down my collar as I shook uncontrollably, my face turning gray from the cold, but all I could hear was the scolding from my parents. "It's simply a little snow. Can't you just play along with your sister for once?"

Then a voice cut in. "You don't want to raise the girl, right? I will. How much? Name a price."

I was still stunned from what Zayne had just said when a woman's voice rang out from the entrance. "Hey, hey! Zayne White! How dare you steal my daughter?!"I looked over and saw Emma storming in, fury written all over her face. She shot Zayne a glare, then yanked me behind her. She pouted and went straight to Grant. "Grandpa Grant! She's my kid! How could you do this behind my back!"Grant clearly knew what had happened already, and he teased her on purpose. "Oh? Since when did you have a daughter this old? You're not even married, and you're still young. Letting Zayne raise her is perfect."Emma glanced at Zayne, who looked completely unbothered. Then, she turned her eyes at me as I stood there still frozen. She huffed and dug in her heels. "No, no. I saw her first. She already calls me 'Mom'!"Zayne smiled as he cut in. "She calls me 'Dad' too, you know?""Hazel! You...!" Emma spun on me as though I had betrayed her. She took a deep breath and crouched down, asking, "Then you p

Even though I called Zayne 'Dad', I only dared to say it when it was just the two of us. That tiny bit of love was something I kept hidden, lying to myself.I was not truly their daughter. What I felt was wrong. But Zayne had already said it first, and I could not refuse. After he brought me to the family residence, he told me to wait at the side and said he would come get me soon.I sat on the sofa. A crystal chandelier hung from the high ceiling of the main hall, and the light was so bright it made me dizzy. Delicate desserts and fruits were laid across the long table in front of me.More and more people were arriving, all in beautiful gowns and tailored suits, looking like they had stepped out of a fairy tale. Meanwhile, I sat at the side, dusty and out of place. My heart beat faster and faster. Then, I felt piercing stares, and I heard people whispering about Zayne."How old is the White family's eldest son now? How many engagements has he turned down?""I heard he is alre

After Emma had left, Zayne and I just stared at each other. Then, he pointed upstairs and said, "Go look at the rooms. Sleep wherever you want. Just tell the butler, and he'll have someone set everything up."I nodded, twisting the hem of my clothes in my hands.Maybe he could tell I was nervous, so his voice softened. "Thank you, Hazel. If you hadn't saved me, I don't even want to think about what would've happened to me right now."It was the first time Zayne had ever said so much to me. I stared at him, stunned, then hurriedly said, "It's alright. I'm the one who should be thanking you for getting me out."The truth was that I had saved him with my own selfish hope. I had wanted to pick a new dad for myself.I bit my lip, fought with myself for a second, then asked, "Can… Can I call you 'Dad'?"He paused.I panicked and apologized, "I'm sorry for being greedy! I already have Emma. It's fine... If you don't want me to, that's alright."Zayne suddenly chuckled. "It's alright.

Zayne let out a soft laugh and pulled me behind him and Emma after he heard my declaration.Only then did I notice Zayne and Emma were both seated. Behind them stood several men in black suits. They looked like bodyguards from a TV show. Maybe they were… Lawyers?I stared at Emma, confused as she smiled at me gently. "Just watch. We're taking you with us."Zayne tossed a stack of papers onto the table and tapped his knuckles on it."Oliver, right? You work at that multinational company, and you've got a shot at a promotion next year?"He turned his head and asked one of the men behind him. "Didn't that little company submit a project proposal to White Group? Tell me, what do you think his boss is going to do when he finds out Oliver has wrecked that project and sunk the whole company?"My dad went from confused to terrified in seconds."White Group? You're from that White family?"His eyes darted between Emma and Zayne. Only then did it hit him. There was something extraordina

That day, I did not escape unscathed.Grandma forced me to take off my shirt, and the wooden stick came down hard on my back. Old wounds flared up, and new ones were added on top of them.I shook with pain and cried out.Grandma sneered and cursed. "Stop the act! You still think those two will save you? You scheming little…"When she finally got tired, she threw me back into the shed. She shot a smug look at Zayne and Emma as the door was slammed shut.Emma rushed over and pulled me up, her eyes already red. "How could she do this to you?! I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have spoken up so recklessly."I wanted to shake my head, but the painful sensation flared up. My vision blurred, and I passed out.-I woke to the sound of Emma crying.Zayne's leg looked infected, and he had a fever, too. Emma was so frantic she nearly threw her phone as she shouted, "This was your stupid idea, and now you're the one passing out?!""Hello?! Is anyone there?! Why is there no signal again?!" Emma a

I wiped the snow off my face and looked up to see who had spoken.Emma stood in front of me. Her face was red from the cold, but even I could see the anger on it. Behind her, Zayne limped out too, using a piece of firewood as a cane."Did you kidnap this girl from somewhere? How could you treat her like this when she's still so young?!" Emma took a deep breath, her voice shaking in fury.My parents still had not figured out what was happening, but when Grandma saw them coming out of the shed, she shot me a sharp look. "Why, you good-for-nothing… How dare you bring this much trouble into my house?! Who told you that you could do that? Speak!"She kicked me in the stomach, and I curled even more out of the pain."What are you doing? This is child abuse!" Emma stepped between us as she pulled me up while I was still numb in shock. She then carefully brushed the snow off me. "If you don't want to raise her, we will."Grandma was about to start screaming again, but my father stepped f
