No… no, no, please no…” I dropped beside the body, but it wasn’t Kellan. I stopped breathing for a second. I couldn’t keep doing this. Every second that passed without seeing him was pure torture.

“Kellan!” I screamed again, tears streaming down my face. “You promised me! You said you’d never leave me!”

My voice broke entirely. I fell to my knees, sobbing. I wiped my face with my sleeve, though it did nothing to stop the tears.

“He has to be okay…” I whispered. “He just has to…” Because if he wasn’t, I didn’t know how I’d survive it.

Fiona held my arm tightly and pulled me up from the ground. My knees felt weak, but her grip helped me stand.

“We’re almost there,” she said, breathing hard. Her face was still wet with tears. “Just a bit more, Seraya. They’re near the west line now. We’ll find them.”
