Emily’s pov

The silence in the lobby stretched thin, like glass ready to shatter.

My smile was still plastered on my face, brittle and too wide, and Ava was practically vibrating with nerves beside me.

Ezra didn’t say a word, his eyes fixed somewhere past Alex’s shoulder like the floor-to-ceiling window held the secrets of the universe.

And then Alex, in his usual, oblivious way, grinned.

“You know what?” he said, clapping Ezra on the shoulder. “We should all grab lunch together. It’s been a while since the four of us sat down.”

I froze and I could feel Ava stiffened while Ezra blinked.

Lunch……..Together.

The thought of sitting at a table with all of us, the four corners of this messy, tangled web made my stomach churn but Alex’s face was so open, so unassuming, that I couldn’t even bring myself to argue.

“That… sounds nice,” I managed, my voice catching halfway through.

Ava made a strangled noise that I think was supposed to be an agreement.

Ezra finally dragged his gaze back to

  • UNBREAK MY HEART   Chapter 116

The sunlight dragged me awake before I was ready. For the first time in weeks, I hadn’t fallen asleep alone. Alex’s warmth had been beside me, his words still wrapped around me like an anchor.I love you. They echoed in my mind, soft and steady, soothing every jagged corner of my heart. But when I blinked awake, he was gone. The sheets were still warm where he’d been, the faint trace of his cologne lingering in the air. A folded note sat on the nightstand. My chest tightened as I reached for it.Didn’t want to wake you.Call me when you’re ready.I meant every word -Alex.I pressed the note against my lips, torn between relief and fear. Relief that he was finally fighting for me the way I’d always wanted. Fear that letting myself believe him again might be the biggest mistake of my life. The day stretched forward, heavy with possibilities I wasn’t sure I wanted to face.I was making coffee when my phone buzzed. For a split second, I thought it was Alex, but when I glanced at the scre

  • UNBREAK MY HEART   Chapter 115

Alex's PovThe moment stretched between us, heavy but alive. Emily’s words, “I don’t know if I can forgive you, but I’m listening” kept echoing in my chest like the only lifeline I’d been thrown in weeks. Listening meant hope. Listening meant I hadn’t lost her completely. I didn’t push closer right away. One wrong move and she’d shut me out again. Instead, I let myself breathe in the quiet, breathe her in, the lavender and candle smoke lingering on her skin, the warmth of her presence that I’d missed more than I could admit. Her eyes flicked down, then back up, guarded but soft around the

  • UNBREAK MY HEART   Chapter 114

Emily’s povThe knock came just past midnight.I almost didn’t open the door. After Ava left, after the tears and the confessions, I’d curled up on the couch with a blanket and let the candle burn itself out. I thought sleep would come easy after so much emotional exhaustion, but instead, I’d been lying there, wide awake, replaying every word, every look, every silence between us. So when the knock came, soft but insistent, my chest tightened immediately. No one else would come at this hour.I didn’t need to check the peephole. I already knew.It was Alex.My hands hesitated on the lock, trembling as though my body knew better than my heart but

  • UNBREAK MY HEART   Chapter 113

Emily’s povAva’s words hung in the air like smoke, filling every corner of my apartment, impossible to ignore. Her face was blotchy from crying, her body hunched in defeat, but her eyes were steady. Steady in that way Ava always was when she’d already made up her mind.“I’m giving you my blessing,” she said again, like repeating it would make it easier for me to hear. “If you and Alex… if something ever happens there, I won’t stand in the way.”It should have felt like relief. I finally got the permission. The loosening of a knot I’d pretended wasn’t there.Instead, it felt like a burden being shoved into my chest.I stared at her, trying to find the right

  • UNBREAK MY HEART   Chapter 112

Ava’s povI stood outside Emily’s door for longer than I should have.My hand hovered over the wood, hesitating, retreating, then lifting again. My heart wouldn’t calm down, thudding loud enough I swore she could hear it on the other side.I’d spent years avoiding this exact moment. Avoiding her questions, her suspicions, her sharp eyes that always saw too much but tonight, after Alex, after what I’d said, after the weight of everything pressing down… I couldn’t keep running.I knocked. It was soft, hesitant, but she answered almost immediately, like she’d been waiting. The door opened and Emily stood there, hair tied up in a messy knot, sweater slipping off one shoulder. Her expression flickered. She was surprise, then something colder, something guarded.“Ava,” she said, flat but not unkind. “What do you want?”My throat tightened. “I… I need to talk to you.”She studied me for a long second, then stepped aside. “Come in.”I slipped inside. Her apartment smelled faintly of coff

  • UNBREAK MY HEART   Chapter 111

Alex’s povThe night pressed against me like a weight I couldn’t shake.By the time I got back to my apartment, the city outside was still humming, horns, voices, the low thrum of nightlife but inside it was silent. I dropped my keys on the counter harder than I meant to, the metallic clatter echoing through the space like an accusation.I should’ve gone straight to bed, drowned myself in the kind of sleep that erases everything for a few hours but I couldn’t. My head was too full, too raw. Ezra’s words stuck like barbed wire, twisting tighter every time I tried to push them out.I love her.The way he’d said it. The way he hadn’t flinched, hadn’t lied, hadn’t even tried to soften it. Ezra, of all people, had stood there and told me something I’d spent years pretending I didn’t already know.Ava wasn’t mine, maybe she never had been. The thought made my chest tighten until I had to pace, crossing the living room with sharp steps. My reflection in the window looked back at me, fra
