Second Chance

First Love

When Mara Vale returns to the quiet coastal town of Bellweather to restore its abandoned lighthouse, she expects broken windows, old memories, and a fresh start—not Elena Reyes. Elena has spent years caring for her family and running their struggling bookstore, quietly putting her own dreams aside. Mara, meanwhile, has built a life around leaving before anyone can give her a reason to stay. Forced to work together on the lighthouse restoration, the two women begin as reluctant partners. But late-night conversations, shared laughter, unexpected kindness, and quiet moments by the sea slowly turn their friendship into something neither is prepared to name. As their feelings grow, both women must confront the lives they've built, the choices they've avoided, and the fear that loving someone might mean losing themselves. When Mara receives an opportunity that could take her away again, they face their biggest challenge yet: choosing between the lives they thought they wanted and the love they never expected to find. The Last Light Between Us is a heartfelt LGBTQ+ romance about second chances, courage, belonging, and discovering that sometimes, home isn't a place. Sometimes, it's a person.

CHAPTER 1: THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK

Mara Vale had left Bellweather when she was eighteen.

She had left before sunrise, with one suitcase, a scholarship letter folded inside her jacket, and a promise she made to herself as the bus pulled away from the harbor.

Never come back.

For twelve years, she had kept that promise.

Until now.

The bus disappeared around the bend, leaving Mara standing beside the small town's weathered bus stop with two suitcases and a folder full of architectural plans.

Bellweather looked exactly the same.

And somehow, completely different.

The bakery across the street still had the same faded blue sign. The smell of cinnamon rolls drifted through the morning air. Fishermen were already returning from the harbor, their boats rocking gently against the wooden docks.

Even the old bookstore was still there.

Mara stared at it for a moment.

She remembered spending rainy afternoons inside, hiding between shelves while her mother searched for her.

She quickly looked away.

Some memories were better left untouched.

At the edge of town stood the lighthouse.

It rose above the cliffs like a tired old soldier, its white walls stained gray by years of salt and rain. Several windows were broken, and weeds had grown around the stone foundation.

But it was still standing.

Mara smiled faintly.

“Still stubborn,” she whispered.

Her phone buzzed.

Council Office: Your transportation is waiting.

Mara picked up her suitcase.

“Right.”

She had not returned for nostalgia.

She had returned for work.

The Bellweather town council had hired her to restore the abandoned lighthouse and transform it into a community arts center. It was supposed to be a straightforward preservation project.

At least, that was what she had told herself.

By the time Mara reached the lighthouse, the sun was already climbing over the ocean.

She pushed open the old gate and stopped.

Someone was standing on a ladder beneath one of the broken windows.

A woman.

She had dark curly hair tied loosely at the back of her head, paint-stained jeans, and a faded green shirt. One hand held a paintbrush while the other balanced against the stone wall.

Mara frowned.

“Are you supposed to be up there?”

The woman looked down.

Her eyebrows lifted.

“Are you supposed to be yelling at strangers?”

“Yes.”

The woman blinked.

Mara immediately realized how ridiculous that sounded.

“I mean—I'm in charge of the restoration.”

“So am I.”

Mara looked at her.

“No, you're not.”

“I work with the historical society.”

“Oh.”

The woman climbed down the ladder and wiped her hands on her jeans.

Up close, Mara noticed her eyes.

Dark brown.

Warm.

And far too amused.

“I'm Elena,” she said.

“Mara.”

“I know.”

Mara paused.

“How?”

Elena pointed toward the folder tucked beneath Mara's arm.

“Your name is printed on everything.”

Mara looked down.

There it was.

MARA VALE — LEAD ARCHITECTURAL PRESERVATIONIST.

“Right.”

Elena smiled.

“You're the woman who's going to save the lighthouse.”

Mara looked toward the building.

“That's the plan.”

Elena followed her gaze.

“Good.”

“What?”

“We need someone stubborn.”

Mara raised an eyebrow.

“And you know I'm stubborn?”

“You came back here.”

The words landed harder than Elena could have known.

Mara's smile disappeared.

Elena noticed.

For a second, neither woman spoke.

Then Elena looked away.

“Sorry. That sounded rude.”

“No.”

Mara tightened her grip around the folder.

“It was accurate.”

Elena gave her a small smile.

“I'll see you around, then.”

She picked up her paint supplies and started walking toward the harbor.

Mara watched her go.

There was something about Elena that bothered her.

Not in a bad way.

That was the problem.

Mara had spent years learning how to avoid distractions.

She knew how to keep conversations short.

She knew how to leave before things became complicated.

She knew how to build walls.

And yet, after only five minutes, this strange woman with paint on her hands had already managed to make her curious.

Mara shook her head.

“Focus.”

She turned toward the lighthouse and unfolded the blueprints.

The building was a mess.

The windows needed replacing.

The staircase needed reinforcement.

The electrical system was outdated.

The entire upper floor needed restoration.

It was going to take months.

Maybe longer.

Mara sighed.

Then she heard laughter from the harbor.

She looked up.

Elena was talking to an elderly fisherman, smiling as the wind caught her hair.

For reasons Mara couldn't explain, she smiled too.

It was small.

Almost invisible.

But it was the first genuine smile she'd given Bellweather in twelve years.

And she didn't yet know that Elena Reyes would become the reason she would eventually choose to stay.

Not because Bellweather had changed.

But because, for the first time, home had changed its meaning.
