(Richard’s POV)

I gripped the steering wheel so hard my fingers began to throb.

The leather of the steering felt like peeling off my skin, but my palms were dripping with sweat.

I tried to focus on the road ahead, but I couldn't focus properly. It kept sliding away, blurring like a messy water fall.

‘What is happening to me?’ I wondered.

My head felt incredibly heavy. As I drove, the board lights smeared into long, neon streaks across the glass.

I hadn't swallowed a single drop of that wine

(Richard’s Pov)I spotted Nora step out of the prison room, and the moment she cleared the door, I stormed in.I felt like a man about to explode. My eyes were red, my chest was heaving, and my blood was boiling. She was walking out, looking calm and composed, with the scent of her expensive perfume trailing behind her like a taunt. I stumbled back the second I came face to face with her, my hands balling into tight fists. The hallway went silent as I glared at her. I wanted to tear her apart right there.Nora didn’t jitter or flinch at my presence. She simply adjusted her scarf and gave me a long, cold, suspicious look. She didn't say a word to me, but she gave me a mean smirk and walked past. The clicking of her heels against the concrete floor sounded like a warning of danger.I didn't wait for the guard. I pushed through the gate and rushed to the small table where Oma was sitting. She was just about to be led back into the prison quarters. Oma jumped when she saw me, her eye

(Oma’s Pov)The door of the San Diego jail room opened. It seemed a new visitor was around.I sat at the small plastic table, my heart racing very fast. Every time that door moved, I expected a new nightmare. I expected a detective to walk in and tell me I was going to prison for the next twenty years. I expected a social worker to tell me I would never hold my baby girl again. The air in here smelled like cheap bleach, and this orange jumpsuit felt like sandpaper against my skin. But when the visitor walked in, I was shocked as my breath caught in my throat. It wasn't a guard, it wasn’t my lawyer, Ned, not even Richard…. It was Nora. She looked beautiful, like she had just stepped off the cover of a luxury magazine, without a single hair out of place. Her blonde hair was smooth and shiny, her makeup was flawless, and her blue dress probably cost a fortune. As she walked across the room, her heel clicked on the pavement.I gripped the edge of the bolted-down table so hard, and I p

(Oma’s POV)The handcuffs bit into my wrists, aggressively which made my head throb. Everything I had worked for in life, felt a million miles away.I sat on a hard plastic bench, my hand resting on my chin and kept my breathing shallow."You’ve got a lot of nerve," an officer spat, slamming a stack of folders on the table in front of me. "Stealing from the Jones family? You picked the wrong people to rob, girl. People like that don't just win, rather they crush people like you." She said,I didn't cry. I didn't offer a single sob for her to feed on. I just looked at her, my eyes boring into hers until she shifted uncomfortably."Officer, I have a right to read the charges," I replied calmly even though my heart was hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. The officer rolled her eyes, scoffed, and walked out and the heavy steel door shut at her back.I was finally alone in the prison. To the police and the elite world of Oakhaven, I was just a poor, wretched girl they could eas

Richard's POVScreeeeecchhhhh!!!!The sound of my tires tearing against the gravel was the only thing louder than the frantic pounding in my chest right now. I didn’t care about the expensive rubber tires I was burning off or the midnight peace of Oakhaven. I was shattered. My only focus was the woman sitting inside that mansion, the woman I used to call Mother.I shoved the car door open and stumbled out. My hair was a disaster, plastered to my forehead with sweat and the bottled water I’d used to force myself awake. My suit was totally ruined, smelling of a damp alleyway and that suffocating, sickly sweet vanilla. My head was still spinning from the sedative she’d hidden in those candles, but the fury in my gut acted like a lightning bolt, keeping me upright.I marched to the front door and threw it open with such force, the heavy wood hit against the interior wall. This wasn't a home anymore, but one filled with lies, and I was done being the silent observer."Mother!" I roared

(Richard’s POV)The elevator ride to the DA’s office felt like my death was near.I leaned my forehead against the cool wall of the car. My reflection in the polished doors looked like a stranger. My hair plastered to my forehead, my clothes soaked and my eyes red and wild. I didn't care about the image anymore. The "perfect son" persona had died in that dining room, suffocated by vanilla candles and my mother’s betrayal. When the doors slid open, I nearly fell out. My legs wobbled, but the fire in my chest kept me moving. I marched down the hallway, the squelch of my wet shoes echoed against the linoleum floor. Ned was waiting for me at the end of the hall. His face went ghostly pale the moment he saw me. He rushed forward, reaching out to catch my arm."Shit! Richie? God, you look like you crawled out of a river," Ned whispered with his voice shaking."I’m fine," I grunted, though my head was still spinning. "Where is it? Where is the footage?"Ned didn't ask any more questions, a

I hadn't even touched the water, but yet, the air in that dining room had been something else, something wasn’t just feeling right. Now, that sweet, sickly smell of vanilla candles was lodged deep in the back of my throat. I have been inhaling it ever since dinner. It tasted like a lie and deception that I should have seen coming the moment I walked through my mother's front door.‘She did it,’ I thought as my stomach grumbled. I gasped and couldn't breathe properly. It be
