Story 2: My Best Friend’s Older Brother

The house smelled the same.

Lemon cleaner, old wood, and the faint trace of the vanilla candles Maya’s mom always burned in the hallway. Sienna stood in the entryway with her weekend bag still hanging from one shoulder, listening to the familiar chaos of her best friend’s family home. Maya was already halfway up the stairs, yelling something about the guest room being ready.

Sienna had spent almost every summer here since she was twelve. Sleepovers, late-night talks, stolen snacks from the pantry. The Hayes house had always felt like a second home.

What had never felt like home was the man currently standing in the kitchen doorway.

Noah Hayes.

Maya’s older brother.

Six years older. Thirty-two now. Taller than she remembered. Broader in the shoulders. The same dark hair, but shorter. The same sharp jaw, but harder somehow. He was holding a glass of water, sleeves of his black T-shirt pushed up to

the elbows, and he was looking at her like he hadn’t expected her to still exist.

Sienna’s stomach dropped.

She hadn’t seen him in almost four years. Not since the summer she turned twenty and he left for a job overseas. Not since the night on the back porch when the air between them had gotten too quiet, too heavy, and he had looked at her mouth for a long second before standing up and walking inside without a word.

They had never spoken about that night.

Maya came bouncing back down the stairs. “Si, you remember Noah, right? He just got back last week. Finally decided to stop being a stranger.”

Noah’s voice was lower than she remembered. “Hey, Sienna.”

Just her name. Nothing else.

She managed a small smile. “Hey.”

Maya, completely oblivious, grabbed Sienna’s bag and started dragging her upstairs. “You’re in the guest room across from mine. Noah’s in his old room, so don’t be weird if you hear him moving around at night. He’s been weirdly quiet since he got back.”

Sienna barely heard her.

All she could think about was the way Noah’s eyes had stayed on her a second too long before he looked away.

Dinner was loud in the way the Hayes family always was. Maya’s parents asked a hundred questions. Maya talked enough for everyone. Noah spoke only when spoken to, and every time he did, Sienna felt it like a hand on the back of her neck.

She caught him watching her twice.

Once when she laughed at something Maya said.

Once when she reached for the wine and the neckline of her top shifted.

Both times he looked away first.

After dinner Maya declared they were watching a movie in the den. Noah said he had work emails. Sienna told herself she was relieved.

She wasn’t.

Around midnight the house finally went quiet. Maya had fallen asleep halfway through the film, head on Sienna’s shoulder. Sienna carefully moved her, covered her with a blanket, and slipped out onto the back porch for air.

The night was warm. The old wooden swing still creaked the same way it used to.

She sat down.

A minute later the screen door opened behind her.

Noah stepped out, a beer in one hand. He didn’t look surprised to find her there. He just walked over and sat on the opposite end of the swing, leaving a careful foot of space between them.

For a while neither of them spoke.

Then he said, quietly, “You still come here every summer.”

“Maya would kill me if I didn’t.”

A small pause. “You look different.”

Sienna turned her head. “So do you.”

Noah’s jaw tightened. He stared out at the dark yard. “I almost didn’t come back this time.”

“Why?”

He didn’t answer right away. When he finally did, his voice was rougher. “Because I knew you’d be here.”

The words landed between them like a match dropped on dry grass.

Sienna’s pulse kicked hard. She should have stood up. She should have made a joke and gone back inside. Instead she stayed exactly where she was, fingers curled around the edge of the swing.

Noah looked at her then. Really looked. The same way he had four years ago on this same porch.

“I shouldn’t have said that,” he muttered.

“But you did.”

He exhaled through his nose, slow. “You’re my little sister’s best friend.”

“I’m twenty-four, Noah.”

“I know exactly how old you are.” His voice dropped. “That’s the problem.”

The swing creaked as he stood. For a second she thought he was going to walk back inside again, the same way he had years ago.

Instead he stopped in front of her. Close enough that she had to tip her head back to meet his eyes.

“Go to bed, Sienna.”

It wasn’t a suggestion.

She stood slowly. They were almost chest to chest. She could smell his skin, clean soap and something warmer underneath. His hand flexed at his side like he was stopping himself from touching her.

“Goodnight, Noah,” she said softly.

He didn’t move as she walked past him and into the house.

She felt his eyes on her the entire way up the stairs.

In the guest room, Sienna sat on the edge of the bed in the dark, heart still racing.

Across the hall, she heard Noah’s door open. Then close.

Neither of them slept easily that night.

And both of them knew the careful distance they had kept for years had just gotten a lot harder to hold.

The next night the floor felt even quieter. Claire had checked the same empty hallway four times before 2:40 a.m. Her body still remembered the night before—the ache between her legs, the way her scrub pants had stayed damp for hours, the low voice telling her to walk the rest of the shift like that. She had done exactly as he ordered. Every time she sat at the station she felt the reminder of him. Marcus appeared without sound. One moment the hallway was empty, the next he was standing at the far end, white coat gone, dark scrubs only, eyes locked on her. He didn’t speak. He simply tilted his head toward the on-call room and turned away. Claire followed. The room was smaller than the supply closet, dominated by a narrow bed with a thin mattress and a metal rail. Marcus shut the door, locked it, and leaned back against it for a moment, just looking at her. The silence stretched. Then he crossed the space, took her wrist, and guided her hand between his legs. He was already hard,

The unit was a graveyard. Only the soft glow of the nurses’ station monitors and the distant, rhythmic beep of a single IV pump broke the silence. 2:51 a.m. Claire had already finished every chart, restocked every drawer, and pretended to check the same vital-signs report three times. She was stalling and she knew it. Dr. Marcus Hale appeared at the end of the hall like he had been waiting for the floor to empty. White coat open, dark scrubs underneath, the shadow of stubble on his jaw. Forty-one. The kind of man who never looked fully off-duty. He stopped a few feet from her, close enough that she caught the faint scent of antiseptic and the coffee he always drank black. “Supply closet,” he said, voice low. “Now.” It wasn’t a request. Claire followed. The closet was narrow, lined with shelves of gauze and saline bags, lit by a single bare bulb. Marcus stepped in after her, shut the door, and turned the lock. The click sounded final in the small space. For three heartbeats they

The email arrived at 9:12 a.m. the morning after grades were due. Room 1412. Hotel on 7th. Key will be at the desk under your name. 8 p.m. Don’t be late. No signature. None needed. Lena stood in front of the door at 7:58, heart already beating too fast. The hallway smelled of expensive carpet cleaner and faint perfume. She knocked once. Julian opened it. He was in a black shirt, sleeves rolled, no tie. The careful professor was gone. What looked at her now was simply a man who had spent months imagining this exact moment and no longer had any reason to hold back. He stepped aside. She walked in. The door clicked shut. The lock turned. The room was large, low-lit, one wide bed already turned down. A bottle of something expensive sat unopened on the desk. Neither of them looked at it. Julian didn’t speak. He simply walked to her, cupped the back of her neck, and kissed her like he had been starving for days. Deep. Wet. Claiming. Lena made a soft sound against his mouth a

Two days later the email arrived at 4:17 p.m. My office. 7:30. Bring the notes we discussed. Lena read it three times. There were no notes. They both knew it. She arrived at 7:28. The department hallway was empty again, the same vending machine humming at the far end. The rectangle of light under his door looked exactly the same. Her pulse did not. She knocked once. “Come in.” Julian was standing this time, sleeves rolled, tie already loosened. He watched her close the door and turn the lock without being told. The soft click felt final. “You came,” he said. “You asked.” He crossed the small space in three steps, took the empty folder from her hands, and set it on the desk without looking at it. Then his mouth was on hers. The kiss was hungrier than the first one. Deeper. Wet. He backed her toward the tall bookshelf that lined the left wall, the one filled with first editions and critical theory she had spent months pretending to care about more than the man who owned them.

  • UNHOLY & FORBIDDEN    Story 3 : Office Hours

The department hallway was silent except for the low hum of the vending machine at the far end. Most of the offices had gone dark hours ago. Only one rectangle of light still spilled across the carpet from under Dr. Julian Hart’s door. Lena stood in front of it longer than she needed to, thesis folder pressed against her chest. Twenty-two. Second-year graduate student. She had sat across from this desk once a week for eight months, watching the way his long fingers turned pages, the way his voice dropped when he read something he liked. She had stopped pretending the meetings were only about the work somewhere around October. She knocked once. “Come in.” Julian Hart was forty-two, tall, dark hair threaded with early silver at the temples, sleeves of his white shirt rolled to the elbows. He did not look surprised to see her. He simply closed the book in front of him and leaned back in the chair. “You’re late,” he said. “I know.” Lena shut the door behind her. The click of t

The only light left on downstairs was the soft lamp in the living room.Sienna found Noah in the kitchen again, leaning against the counter with a glass of water in his hand. He looked up the second she appeared in the doorway.Neither of them pretended this time. She walked straight to him. Noah set the glass down, cupped her face with both hands, and kissed her like he’d been thinking about it every second since last night. Deep. Hungry. His tongue slid against hers as one hand dropped to her ass and pulled her flush against him. She felt the thick ridge of his cock already hard through his sweatpants.“Upstairs,” he muttered against her mouth. “Now.”They barely made it to his old bedroom. The door shut. The lock clicked. Noah backed her toward the bed, pulling her shirt off on the way, then her shorts. She was bare underneath. He groaned a
