She woke before the alarm again.

It was becoming a pattern. Her body had learned to wake in the darkness, to steal a few moments of stillness before the weight of the truth crashed down on her. For a second just a second she didn't remember. She was just Eleanor. Just a wife. Just a mother.

Then she remembered.

Victoria. Five years. Ethan isn't mine. The certificate is forged.

She lay still, staring at the ceiling, feeling the heat of Julian's arm draped across her waist. He was still asleep. His breath was warm against her neck. Slow. Steady. Content.

She wanted to shove him off. She wanted to scream. She wanted to claw at his face and demand to know how he could do this to her.

She didn't move.

She lay perfectly still, breathing slowly, evenly, counting the seconds until the alarm finally went off.

The kitchen smelled like coffee and toast.

Ethan was already at the table, swinging his legs, a half-eaten piece of toast in his hand. He looked up when she walked in. His face lit up.

"Mama!"

"Hey, baby."

She kissed the top of his head. Breathed him in. He smelled like syrup and sleep and the shampoo she'd bought him last week.

Ethan is hers.

The thought came unbidden. She pushed it away.

"I need pictures," he said, mouth full. "For my family tree. I asked Daddy but he said he'd look and he didn't."

Julian looked up from his phone. "I'll find them today. I promise."

Ethan rolled his eyes. "That's what you said yesterday."

Eleanor poured coffee. Handed Julian his cup. Smiled.

The smile was starting to feel like a mask she couldn't take off.

---

She dropped Ethan at school.

He kissed her cheek. Ran toward the gates. Turned back once to wave.

She waved back.

Then she sat in the car. The smile faded. The mask slipped.

She drove to Daniel Hartley's office.

Daniel was waiting for her.

He gestured to the chair across from his desk. She sat. Pulled out her phone. Showed him the photos she'd taken of the box contents.

The marriage certificate. Julian and Victoria. Five years old.

The photo of Victoria holding a newborn Ethan.

The letter from Victoria.

The forged certificate with her name on it.

Daniel studied each image carefully. Then he set the phone down and looked at her.

"Tell me what you want," he said. "Not what you think you should want. Not what anyone else would want. What do you want?"

Eleanor opened her mouth. Closed it.

What did she want?

She wanted to wake up from this nightmare. She wanted to go back to yesterday, before she knew. She wanted to believe that her life was real.

But she couldn't.

"I want to leave," she said finally. "I want to leave and never come back."

Daniel nodded. "And the boy?"

The question hit her like a physical blow.

Ethan.

She thought about his face at breakfast. His small hands. His laugh. The way he'd clung to her last night, sobbing about a dream.

"I don't know," she whispered. "I don't know what to do about Ethan."

She came home in the afternoon.

Julian wasn't there. Ethan was at an after-school program.

She walked through the house. The house she thought was hers. The house she cleaned. The house she decorated. The house where she raised a child who wasn't hers.

She stopped in the living room.

She looked at the photos on the mantel. Julian and Eleanor at their wedding. Julian and Eleanor at the beach. Julian, Eleanor, and Ethan at Christmas.

She picked up the wedding photo. Studied it.

She looked happy. She was happy.

She set it back down.

Julian came home at seven.

Late. Distracted. He forgot to kiss her. Forgot to ask about her day. He was on his phone constantly. Smiling at the screen. Hiding it when she walked by.

She watched him.

She noticed things she never noticed before. The way he laughed at messages he didn't share. The way he turned his back when he took calls. The way he lied so easily.

She wondered how she never saw it.

She wondered what else she missed.

That night, she lay in bed beside Julian.

He was asleep within minutes. She stared at the ceiling. Listened to his breathing. Slow. Steady. Content.

She thought about running.

She thought about staying.

She thought about Ethan.

And then she heard it.

Small footsteps. Crying. The creak of a door.

She sat up. Julian didn't stir.

She slipped out of bed. Walked to the hallway.

Ethan was standing in the doorway of his room. His face was wet with tears. His small body was shaking. He was clutching his blanket like a lifeline.

"Mama?"

She crossed the room in three steps. Knelt in front of him. Cupped his face in her hands.

"Baby, what's wrong?"

He threw his arms around her. Clung to her like she might disappear.

"I had a dream," he sobbed. "I dreamed you left me. I dreamed you went away and you didn't come back."

Eleanor's heart shattered.

She held him. Tight. Tighter. Breathed him in. Felt his small hands gripping her shirt. Felt his tears soaking through the fabric.

"I'm here," she whispered. "I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere."

"But in my dream—"

"It was just a dream, baby. Just a dream."

He pulled back. Looked up at her. His eyes were red. His nose was running. He was so small. So fragile. So scared.

"Promise?" he whispered. "Promise you won't leave me?"

Eleanor's throat closed.

She thought about the evidence in the closet. The photos. The letter. The truth. She thought about running. She thought about disappearing. She thought about leaving this house and never coming back.

But Ethan.

Ethan was looking at her with those eyes—Julian's eyes, Victoria's eyes—and he was waiting. He was waiting for her to promise.

She couldn't lie to him.

But she couldn't tell him the truth.

"I will always love you," she said carefully. "Always. No matter what. Do you understand?"

He nodded. Sniffed. Wiped his nose on his sleeve.

"Will you stay with me tonight?"

She hesitated.

Then she nodded.

She carried him back to his bed. Tucked him in. Lay beside him. Hummed the lullaby she'd sung to him since he was a baby.

He fell asleep holding her hand.

She stayed awake all night.

Watching him breathe.

Wondering how she would ever let him go.

The next morning, after Ethan left for school, Eleanor sat in the dark and thought.

She thought about Ethan. About the dream. About the way he'd clung to her. The way he'd begged her not to leave.

She thought about Victoria.

Victoria was his mother. His real mother. But Victoria had given him up. Victoria had chosen her career over her son. Victoria had let Eleanor raise him for eight years without a single word.

Did Victoria deserve him?

Did Julian?

Did Eleanor have any right to him at all?

She didn't know the answers.

But she knew one thing: she would not abandon him. No matter what happened. No matter how this ended. She would not be another person who left him.

She called Daniel.

"I need to know my rights," she said. "About Ethan. About everything."

Daniel told her it would take time. She told him she had time.

She'd been invisible for six years.

She could be invisible a little longer.

But when she emerged—she wouldn't be the same woman.

She'd be something else.

Something Julian never saw coming.

---

That night, Julian came home late again.

Drunk. Careless. He stumbled through the door, kicked off his shoes, didn't bother to greet her. He went straight to the bedroom.

Eleanor waited.

When she heard the shower running, she walked into the bedroom.

His phone was on the nightstand.

She picked it up.

She shouldn't. She knew she shouldn't. But she'd already crossed so many lines. What was one more?

She unlocked it—she knew his passcode; he'd never bothered to hide it—and opened his messages.

Victoria.

The name was at the top.

She opened the thread.

And her blood ran cold.

Victoria: I can't wait much longer. When are you going to tell her?

Julian: Soon. I promise.

Victoria: You've been saying that for two years.

Julian: She's fragile. She can't handle the truth.

Victoria: She's not fragile. She's useful. There's a difference.

Julian: I know. But we need her. For Ethan.

Victoria: Ethan is MY son. Not hers. I want him back.

Julian: You can't just take him. She's been his mother for eight years.

Victoria: She's not his mother. I am. And I want what's mine.

Eleanor stared at the screen.

Her hands were shaking.

Her heart was pounding.

She scrolled up. Further. Further.

And then she saw it.

A message from months ago.

Victoria: Have you told her yet? About the surgery?

Julian: No. She doesn't need to know.

Victoria: What if she finds out?

Julian: She won't. I handled it. She thinks she's barren. She'll never know the truth.

Eleanor's vision blurred.

The surgery.

The barren lie.

She'd never had surgery. She'd never been told she was barren by a doctor. Julian had told her. Only Julian.

She scrolled further.

Victoria: You're sure she'll never find out?

Julian: She trusts me. She thinks I saved her. She thinks I'm her hero. She'll never question it.

Eleanor dropped the phone.

It clattered to the floor.

She stood there. Frozen. Shaking.

The surgery.

The barren lie.

It was all fake.

Everything was fake.

She wasn't barren.

She never was.

And Julian

Julian had lied to her about that too.

The shower stopped.

Eleanor grabbed the phone. Put it back on the nightstand. Walked out of the bedroom.

She made it to the kitchen before her legs gave out.

She sat on the floor. Her back against the cabinets. Her hands over her mouth. Her tears falling silently.

She wasn't barren.

She could have had children.

She could have had a family.

But Julian took that from her.

He took everything.

And now—now she knew.

Now she had proof.

Now she had a weapon.

She looked up at the ceiling. At the house she'd built on lies. At the life she'd lived in the dark.

And she smiled.

Not the mask.

A real smile.

The first real smile she'd had in days.

She couldn't move. She just stood there, staring at the woman who had been sleeping with her husband for five years. The woman who had given birth to the child she had raised. The woman who had orchestrated the entire deception. The woman who had sent her a text just hours ago: Stay away from my son."Victoria," she said. Her voice was steady. She didn't know how.
