She didn't confront him that night.

She wanted to. God, she wanted to. She sat on the kitchen floor, her back against the cabinets, her hands over her mouth, her tears falling silently, and every part of her screamed to wake him. To drag him out of bed. To make him look her in the eye and explain how he could do this to her.

She didn't move.

She couldn't.

Because if she confronted him, she would have to face the truth. All of it. The forged certificate. Victoria. Five years. Ethan. The barren lie. The surgery that never happened. Everything she had built her life on would collapse in a single moment, and she wasn't ready to stand in the rubble.

Not yet.

So she sat on the kitchen floor until her legs went numb. Until her tears dried. Until the cold from the tiles seeped into her bones and settled there like a second skin.

Then she stood.

She walked back to the bedroom. Julian was still asleep. His breath was slow. Steady. Content. He had no idea. No idea that she knew. No idea that the woman beside him was no longer his fool. No idea that everything was about to change.

She climbed into bed.

She lay still. Silent. Invisible.

Like she had been for six years.

She closed her eyes.

She didn't sleep.

The next morning, she made breakfast.

Eggs. Toast. Coffee. The same breakfast she made every morning. The same smile she wore every day. The same mask.

Ethan was at the table, swinging his legs, talking about the family tree project again. He needed pictures. Old ones. From both sides of the family.

"I asked Daddy last night," he said, mouth full of toast. "He said he'd find some today."

Julian looked up from his phone. "I will. I promise."

Ethan rolled his eyes. "That's what you said yesterday."

Eleanor poured coffee. Handed Julian his cup. Smiled.

The smile was starting to feel like a mask she couldn't take off.

---

She dropped Ethan at school.

He kissed her cheek. Ran toward the gates. Turned back once to wave.

She waved back.

Then she sat in the car. The smile faded. The mask slipped.

She drove to Priya's apartment.

---

Priya opened the door before Eleanor could knock.

She took one look at Eleanor's face and pulled her inside.

"What happened?"

Eleanor opened her mouth. Closed it. Opened it again.

"I found something," she whispered. "In the closet. A locked box."

Priya's face went pale. "What was in it?"

Eleanor pulled out her phone. Showed her the photos.

The marriage certificate. Julian and Victoria. Five years old.

The photo of Victoria holding a newborn Ethan.

The letter.

The forged certificate with her name on it.

Priya stared at the screen. Her hands were shaking. Her face was white.

"This is—" She couldn't finish.

"I know."

"Elle, this is—"

"I know."

"He's been—"

"I know."

Priya looked up. Her eyes were wet. "You have to leave him."

Eleanor nodded. "I know."

"Today. Right now. You have to—"

"I can't."

Priya blinked. "What?"

"Ethan." Eleanor's voice cracked. "I can't leave Ethan."

They sat on Priya's couch for hours.

Eleanor told her everything. The registry office. Cynthia. The forged certificate. The overheard phone call. The locked box. The photos. The letter. The truth about Ethan. And then—the barren lie. The surgery that never happened. The doctor's report she found in the box. The proof that Julian had lied to her about the one thing that had broken her heart more than anything else.

Priya listened. She didn't interrupt. She didn't offer advice. She just listened.

When Eleanor finished, Priya was quiet for a long moment.

Then she said, "You need a lawyer."

"I have one. Daniel Hartley. My grandmother's lawyer."

"Your grandmother's lawyer?"

"She left me something. I don't know what yet. But Daniel said—" Eleanor stopped. Swallowed. "He said I'm worth more than I know."

Priya stared at her. "What does that mean?"

"I don't know yet. But I'm going to find out."

She came home in the afternoon.

Julian wasn't there. Ethan was at an after-school program.

She walked through the house. The house she thought was hers. The house she cleaned. The house she decorated. The house where she raised a child who wasn't hers.

She stopped in the living room.

She looked at the photos on the mantel. Julian and Eleanor at their wedding. Julian and Eleanor at the beach. Julian, Eleanor, and Ethan at Christmas.

She picked up the wedding photo.

She studied it.

She looked happy. She was happy.

She set it back down.

She walked to the kitchen. Made dinner. Set the table. Waited.

Julian came home at seven.

He kissed her cheek. Asked about her day. Sat down to dinner. Talked about work. Laughed at something on his phone.

She watched him.

She wondered how he could do it. How he could sit across from her, eating the food she cooked, in the house she cleaned, and lie to her face. How he could pretend. How he could smile. How he could be so completely, utterly, terrifyingly normal.

She wondered if he had ever loved her.

She wondered if he was capable of love at all.

That night, after Julian fell asleep, Eleanor slipped out of bed.

She didn't go to the closet. She didn't need to. She had already photographed everything. She had already memorized every detail.

Instead, she walked to the bathroom. Stood in front of the mirror. Stared at her reflection.

The mask was still there. The smile. The calm.

But beneath it, something was growing.

Something cold. Something sharp. Something patient.

She heard Julian's phone buzz on the nightstand. She walked back into the bedroom. He was asleep. She looked at the screen.

Victoria: I miss you. When can I see you?

Eleanor read the message.

Then she deleted it.

Then she smiled.

Not the mask.

A real smile.

The first real smile she'd had in days.

---

She climbed back into bed.

Julian stirred. "Where'd you go?"

"Bathroom."

"Oh." He yawned. Turned over. "Love you."

The words hit her like a knife.

She lay still. Stared at the ceiling.

"Love you too," she whispered.

The lie was easy now.

She was learning.

The next morning, she called Daniel Hartley.

"I need to know my rights," she said. "About everything. About Ethan. About the house. About the money. About what I can and can't do."

Daniel was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "Come to my office. Today. We have a lot to discuss."

She hung up.

She looked at herself in the mirror.

The mask was still there.

But it was starting to crack.

The woman who had orchestrated the entire deception. The woman who had sent her a text just hours ago: Stay away from my son."Victoria," she said. Her voice was steady. She didn't know how. Every mask she'd ever worn. Every performance she'd perfected over six years. All of it vanished. She was just a woman. A woman holding a child who wasn't hers. A child who was looking at her with confused, trusting eyes."Mama?" Ethan's voice was small. "Who is she?"Eleanor's throat closed. She couldn't tell him the truth. Not now. Not like this.
