Chapter 4

Author: Piggleston
Ms. Lowe tried to say something, but Mom cut her off. "Ms. Lowe, we know you mean well, but as her parents, we know how to handle our child."

Dad stood up as well. "We're already dealing with Sophie's behavior. So, we won't take up any more of your time today."

Ms. Lowe clearly wasn't done, but Mom had already opened the door for her. After a pause, she could only sigh and leave.

As soon as the door closed, Mom scoffed. "All Sophie ever does is cause us trouble. Forget it. I'll head to the grocery store."

Just as she reached into her wallet, she froze. "Where's my money? I clearly put the 100-dollar bill I had left after buying Bridget's clothes yesterday in the inner pocket of my wallet!"

I hovered nearby, shaking my head. "No, Mom. You stuffed the money into that white shopping bag without thinking yesterday. The bag tipped over later, and the money slid underneath the couch."

By the time Mom snapped her head up, her face already contorted with rage. "It was Sophie! She definitely stole it!"

I froze in disbelief.

She gritted her teeth. "Bridget gets enough pocket money every month. She has no reason to steal. Sophie's the only one in this house who has no money!"

Pain tore through my chest, and tears ran down my face.

I rushed to Mom's side and shook my head desperately. "It wasn't me! The money's right under the couch! If you just bend down and look, you'll see it!"

Of course, she couldn't hear me. She was trembling with rage, her voice burning with anger. "Come on, honey! We're bringing that brat home today! It's time she learned a proper lesson!"

First, they went to the optical store. The employee shook her head and told them I had left on my own after the store closed. So, they began searching the surrounding area.

They hadn't gone far when they spotted police tape stretched across the road ahead. Red and blue lights flashed harshly. Snatches of conversation drifted over from the crowd.

"What a tragedy. A young girl was hit by a truck and thrown into a ditch… She didn't have a phone or any ID on her. No one's come to identify her yet."

Dad frowned when he heard that. "Kids these days are such a handful. They never make things easy for their parents. She probably ran off just because she felt a little wronged. Imagine how heartbroken her parents must be when they find out."

Mom shook her head and snorted. "Exactly. Once we find Sophie, I'll bring her here to see this. Then she'll understand the consequences of not listening to us!"

I smiled bitterly beside them. "Yeah. I understand it now. I'm sorry, Mom and Dad. I should've listened to you. I brought this on myself and disappointed you again."

They sighed and walked around the crowd, continuing their search. A few hundred yards later, Mom suddenly stopped. She was staring at a sneaker lying in the grass, caked in mud and dirty water.

She bent down to pick it up, and her expression darkened instantly. "This is Sophie's shoe."

Dad looked around, frowning. "How did her shoe end up here?"

Mom seemed to have found her own answer. She gritted her teeth. "She's destroying her own belongings just to get back at us! I shouldn't have gone soft on her yesterday and thought of taking her to get her eyes checked!"

His expression darkened, too. "How did she turn out like this?"

I floated in front of Mom, sobbing so hard that my whole body trembled. "Mom, I didn't throw it away… It fell off, but I couldn't see clearly enough to find it. I didn't do it on purpose…"

Just then, a police officer searching nearby overheard them and hurried over. "Did you just say Sophie Sink?"

He took out a clear evidence pouch. Inside was a broken transit card, snapped in half. My name was printed on it.

His expression turned grave. "The deceased's name was Sophie Sink. May I ask what your relationship to her was?"

Three days later, Mom and Dad held a funeral for me.My teachers, classmates, neighbors, and a whole crowd of relatives I barely knew all came to pay their respects. They brought me all kinds of gifts—hair clips, fountain pens, storybooks, and even a matching skirt suit I had only ever dared to admire through a store window. At the very back of the funeral hall sat 14 beautifully wrapped gift boxes.Curious, I floated over to take a close look. The labels read, "Sophie's 1st Birthday Gift", "Sophie's 2nd Birthday Gift", and so on until the 14th one.Mom and Dad had finally made up for all the birthday presents I had missed out on over the years. There was also a huge cake beside the gifts."May Sophie Sink rest in peace."I couldn't help but give a bitter smile. It turned out that I could have a cake even when it wasn't my birthday. Alas, I would never get to taste it.Soon, I saw Mom and Dad. In just a few short days, they looked a decade older.Dad's chin was covered in stub

"Impossible!"Mom rushed forward and snatched the report out of the forensic pathologist's hands. Her face tense, she scanned the report line by line, as if she could find a typo that would prove it was all a mistake.Of course, everything was written in ink.Her hands shook violently. "No, this must've been a mistake. How could her eyesight have been that bad?"Dad grabbed the report and read it thoroughly. No matter how many times he read it, the results remained the same.Captain Cooper looked at them and snorted coldly. "Her preion was over minus ten diopters in both eyes. In other words, without glasses, she could barely see a thing. She might as well have been blind."Mom's legs gave way. She collapsed to the floor. Dad clutched the report, his whole body trembling.Captain Cooper wasn't finished. "You took her to an optical store, yet you only bought your younger daughter a pair of designer sunglasses while refusing to get the deceased even the cheapest preion lenses!"M

Mom and Dad froze. "Her vision?"She reacted as if those two words had struck her. She jerked her head up. "There was nothing wrong with her eyes!"She spoke so quickly that her voice rose to a shrill pitch. "She just didn't want to study, so she made up a lie that she was nearsighted! No one in our family is nearsighted!"My husband and I both have excellent eyesight, and so does her little sister. Why is she the only one with a problem?"Captain Cooper looked at her but didn't argue right away. Instead, he rewound the surveillance footage. On the screen, I was wearing only one shoe, feeling around on the ground for a long time. My missing shoe was clearly lying just a short distance away, but I never managed to touch it, not even once.He paused the footage again, his expression grave. "Are you absolutely sure that there was nothing wrong with her vision?"Mom's lips moved, but she couldn't say anything.Captain Cooper kept staring at her. "And losing her shoe wasn't the only

Mom froze for a moment. Then, as if enraged by the driver's words, she lunged at him again."You're lying! What do you mean she walked into the road? I'm sure she was perfectly fine on the sidewalk! Why would she suddenly wander into traffic for no reason? Don't try to fool me with your lies!"The driver's face was deathly pale, his lips trembling. When Mom tried to hit him again, Captain Cooper grabbed her and held her back. "Ma'am, calm down."She thrashed desperately, her voice shrill. "He killed my daughter, and now he's trying to blame her! She was so timid! Even as a kid, she wouldn't cross the street unless someone was with her! How could she have walked into traffic by herself?"At those words, tears welled up in my eyes. So, she did remember. She remembered how timid I was, how afraid I was to cross the road alone, but she had no idea that I hadn't been able to see clearly for a long time.Captain Cooper's expression darkened. He ordered the others to separate them."Ac

The body beneath the white sheet was mine.I had been lying in that filthy ditch overnight. My face had bloated beyond recognition, and my body reeked of decay. My clothes were torn to shreds, and strands of hair clung to my face.Seeing myself like that, I panicked. Instinctively, I rushed forward and threw myself between Mom and the gurney. "Mom, don't look! I'm so ugly and filthy now! You're going to scold me again, aren't you?"You'll say I don't take care of my clothes, that I lost my shoe and even tore all my clothes. I'm sorry, Mom. I embarrassed you again…"But she couldn't see me. She walked straight through my body and took two steps forward.Clearly, she recognized my clothes, too. Her eyes were fixed on the body lying on the gurney. Slowly, her face became pale. "No… This can't be Sophie…"Dad stood frozen as well. He was still clutching my sneaker. Now his fingers loosened, and the shoe dropped to the floor with a thud."No… This can't be happening… She was fine jus

Mom looked confused, then frowned and asked, "What do you mean, the deceased?"She looked the two officers up and down before letting out a cold laugh."Are you two even real police officers? Wow. Have scammers really gotten this desperate? You throw on a uniform and think you can go around scamming people?"The officers paused, then took out their badges and held them up for her to see.Dad took one and carefully checked the photo and badge number. He then glanced at the patrol car parked nearby. His expression finally turned serious. "Officer, what exactly happened?"The officer put his badge away. "Someone just found the body of a teen girl in a drainage ditch up ahead. The only item that could help identify her was this broken transit card. We're working to confirm her identity."At that, Mom finally looked at the clear evidence pouch. The transit card, snapped in half, had my name printed in one corner. Her eyes widened.Of course, she recognized that card. She was the one
