Chapter 1

I stood in the great hall of the Dragon Court, the pain in my chest from my last death still not entirely gone.

"Vera Watson really is lucky. She's only a lowly black serpent, but somehow the crown prince chose her."

"After this, her status in the Serpent Clan may even rise above her sister's. Maybe if she bears a little dragon, His Highness will grant her a dragon core and let her ascend."

I looked at Adrian Draven standing before me, and hatred rose in my heart.

So Heaven had taken pity on the wrong done to me and given me the chance to live again.

Just like in my last life, Adrian had chosen me during the bride selection. King Aurelius sat high above us, his expression displeased.

"You are my most promising son. Are you truly willing to defy me for a lowborn black serpent?"

Adrian suddenly stiffened. In the next breath, he flung my hand away with disgust written across his face.

"Father, I was confused just now. How could I possibly marry a filthy, lowly black serpent?"

I understood at once.

He had been reborn too.

In our last life, when King Aurelius questioned him, he had chosen me without wavering. The king, furious, had driven him from the Dragon Court.

More than ten years after our wedding, I finally became pregnant and gave birth to a tiny black serpent. Adrian was enraged.

"The forbidden book clearly said you carried primordial power. Why did you still give birth to a lowly serpent?"

He smashed our baby on the ground, then pierced my heart with his sword.

Now that he had returned to the past, of course he would not repeat the same mistake.

Adrian said coldly, "I mistook this wretch for Princess Celeste of the Serpent Clan.

"The one I wish to marry is the auspicious white serpent, not this black serpent who only brings misfortune."

Among the Dragon Court, status was judged by the color of one's scales. The most honored were the golden dragons, followed by crimson, azure, white, and finally the black dragons at the very bottom.

Golden dragons appeared perhaps once in a century. Even in this life, Adrian was the only golden dragon.

In my previous life, my sister Celeste had married the second prince and given birth to a rare golden dragon, helping him seize the throne.

I watched Adrian pull Celeste to the center of the hall. Her face could not hide her surprise and delight.

She leaned shyly into his arms. "Thank you for your favor, Your Highness. But you already chose my sister just now. If you change your mind now, won't she be heartbroken?"

A deep venom surfaced in Adrian's eyes.

"A shameless servant who doesn't know her place deserves only to kneel and wait on you. If she displeases you, throw her into the pit and feed her to the venom bugs."

Celeste lowered her eyes, all meekness and grace. "Since Your Highness cares for me so much, may I ask for one wish?

"I want to arrange a marriage for my sister as well."

Adrian did not object. "A thing like her has been abandoned by me. No one else will want her. You're too kind."

A flash of cruelty passed through Celeste's eyes.

Because Father loved my mother, I had received more affection than she had, even though I was only a black serpent.

And just now, Adrian had chosen me first. To Celeste, that was humiliation.

She smiled innocently and pointed to a dark corner below the platform.

"If no one wants her, then let her marry that lowborn worm servant."

"Celeste," I said, "I had planned to let you live.""Still talking tough when you're about to die?"Before the smile could leave her face, a long howl sounded in the distance. The baby who had been sleeping moments ago transformed into the Ninefold Dawn Wyrm. Carrying wind and rain with him, he descended upon the hall in an instant."There is a seal on my heart that controls his power," I said. "Once it breaks, his Dawn Wyrm power will be fully released."Thank you for helping me with that."With one sweep of his tail, he wiped out every guard outside the door. The rebels were greatly encouraged and surged into the hall."Adrian has slaughtered his own people and angered Heaven. The divine beast has descended and commanded us to remove the tyrant and restore peace to the Dragon Court!"No matter how strong Adrian was, he could not withstand such an overwhelming attack. With the Dawn Wyrm himself presiding over the battle, the rebels were stirred to fury and soon forced him into

Her once round and radiant face had become so thin that her cheeks caved in. Her healthy color had turned gray. No one surrounded her anymore. She looked withered and miserable, with none of the splendor of the former crown princess.I could not help looking at her a moment longer. Celeste suddenly exploded."What are you looking at? Did you come here just to laugh at me?""So what if you gave birth to a divine beast? In the end, I'm still queen!"I rolled my eyes, unwilling to deal with this madwoman. But then she dropped to her knees in front of me.Celeste wept bitterly. All her forced dignity was gone."Sister, please give me your child. If you don't, I'm really going to die!"I thought I had misheard her. But Celeste's eyes were feverish as she lunged forward and clutched the hem of my dress."Adrian tortures me every day. I'm going to die at his hands. Give me your child, please. Your husband doesn't need to inherit the Dragon Court anyway, so you don't need him-"Slap.

I looked at his tangled fingers and, in the end, my heart softened.Of course I knew he had not done it on purpose. At the beginning, I had only planned to borrow his seed and have a child. What right did I have to demand that he stay with me forever? And yet, for reasons I could not explain, when he stood in front of me, warmth had surged in my heart. At some unknown point, he had occupied a place inside me. He had silently taken root there, and by the time I noticed, those roots had already grown deep and full.I sighed, rose, and held his face in my hands. The dignified heir of Lord of Heaven was obedient in my palms like a well-behaved puppy. His skin beneath my hands was cool and soft.Counting it carefully, we had been married for so long, yet we had only shared a bed that one time. The night grew cool, but my body slowly warmed.Silas's gaze deepened. His throat moved, and he bent to lift me into his arms. One reckless night followed. The next day, I slept until the s

Silas dissolved the power of that palm into the clouds with ease. Then he returned that force, along with every attack from earlier, all at once.King Aurelius was struck by his own blow. His organs shattered, and he collapsed to the ground, unable to move. The rest of the Dragon Court fared no better. They scattered across the courtyard, fleeing the backlash.I looked coldly at the wreckage before me. Moments ago, the dragons had been arrogant and aggressive. Now they were so wretched not one of them could stand.Adrian roared and revealed his true dragon form, charging toward us.Silas remained calm. He did not even move his feet. He simply lifted one finger. In an instant, white light flashed. The golden dragon that had been charging so fiercely seemed to freeze in place. With a thunderous crash, Adrian fell to the ground. Blood sprayed from his mouth. He twitched twice and then stopped moving. The remaining dragon soldiers no longer dared act. They scattered like frightene

Elder Seraph's sharp gaze swept over every dragon present."The Dawn Wyrm has appeared. I must announce this to the whole world. If any petty creature here dares harbor ill intent toward him again, prepare yourselves for Heaven's punishment."Elder Seraph bowed once more to my baby. The Dawn Wyrm obediently changed back into a little dragon and returned to my arms.King Aurelius stared at me in disbelief."Vera, if you can make the Dawn Wyrm acknowledge Adrian as his father, I will allow you and your child to return to the Dragon Court. You may rightfully become Adrian's princess consort."Adrian glared at me. "Letting that cheap worm become the father of the Dawn Wyrm insults the entire Dragon Court. Vera, you should understand what you need to do."I looked at Silas, who had remained silent beside me, and anger rose in my chest. No matter which life it was, these people always carried themselves as though they stood above all others. They thought themselves superior and treate

Celeste collapsed to the ground in disbelief. Adrian stared at the black dragon as though he could not accept what he was seeing. Around them, the crowd whispered until the two were so ashamed they looked as if they wished the ground would swallow them whole.King Aurelius flew into a rage."Didn't you swear you would give birth to a golden dragon? I even invited Elder Seraph here. Are you trying to make the entire three realms laugh at the Dragon Court?"Elder Seraph also looked disappointed. He rose to leave."It seems the Dragon Court truly has declined. Now it celebrates even the birth of a black dragon."Celeste's face looked dreadful. Her gaze landed on me, and she suddenly screamed."It was them! Those two unlucky things brought disaster and turned my golden dragon baby into a black dragon!"There were auspicious signs when I gave birth. How could it be only a black dragon?"Adrian shouted with her. "Father, they must have stolen my golden dragon's fortune. Kill them!"
