LOGINChapter 5- Bread, Water, and Regret
RONAN POV
The walk to the holding cell felt longer. My feet were unsteady beneath me, a heavy weight pulling down on my chest from the inside.
Everything else sucked.
The bloody council. Aurelia’s trial. Everything fucking sucked. Because for the very first time, I was torn between doing what was right and fighting for the one my heart yearned for. The sense of duty hung around my neck like an invisible noose, ready to yank my head off my neck.
The investigation was thorough. And even with the staggering evidence that only seemed to get worse and worse, I still refused to believe Aurelia would murder an elder.
Not when she worked so hard to make everything perfect.
Even yesterday, she had been the one to receive each and every single guest who arrived, standing tall and proud, a warm smile on her face.
She couldn’t have possibly had any motive to ruin all her hard work.
So it sure as hell did not make sense when I found a vial of poison hidden among ample loads of makeup containers amongst her many girly belongings in her bedroom. I took it for testing, trying to decipher what kind of poison it was that would snuff a whole werewolf in a matter of seconds, and I was not prepared for what I found.
Everything was blowing out of proportion and it felt like I was losing my grip on control.
I didn’t want her to die.
Not like this. Not when everything was shrouded by uncertainty so bad that I felt like I was losing my mind.
I swallowed audibly as I opened the door to the holding cell. Everything felt wrong. This was no place for someone like Aurelia. This was for evil-doers.
A silent crack sounded in my chest as I took in the side of her huddled to the corner, her neck bent in an unnatural manner as she snored softly. She must have dozed off.
She looked… peaceful. Just how could someone like this commit such a crime? She knew the use of magic was punishable by death in our world. Just how-
Aurelia stirred as she sensed my presence, and then she jumped, eyes glowing gold as her wolf jumped to the front. I nodded softly at her, not knowing what to do, or say.
Her shoulders relaxed visibly as she took in the sight of me.
“Oh. It's just you.” She slowly smoothed the wrinkles of her gown before walking to the small bench and perching herself. I shifted to open the bars and slowly walked to her, then perched myself next to her before offering her the bread and a bottle of water I managed to sneak from the kitchen.
If it were up to her dad, she would have been starved before being killed. I refused to have that.
Aurelia clasped onto the foil before ripping it to reveal a stuffed bread, then munched on it like it was her first time eating. I watched her gobble the scraps with the kind of desperation that broke my heart. Her hands even trembled when I handed her a bottle of water. She downed it in a heartbeat.
“Damn, that was delicious. I would have preferred meat though.” Always the smooth talker.
Silence stretched between us for a minute too long. I waited for her to ask me why I did not defend her yesterday, and whether I completed my investigation. But she never did. I waited for her to rant, to talk about how unfair all this was. But she never did. She just sat there, silently, her heart beating calmly.
There was so much I was yet to find out, so many things that did not make sense and the sentence was already hanging over her head like a black cloud of an ominous curse.
“What’s wrong? You are awfully quiet.” She asked after a very long pause.
I contemplated telling her what I found, that the witches were called, and that the use of magic was just added to her sentence. I contemplated telling her my plan. That I planned to swap her with somebody else who would take the fall, and that I would snuggle her off the boarders.
I had people. Connections. Someone to take her away and hide her far away from this place that seemed to have waited for her downfall her entire life.
But somehow I couldn’t get the words past my mouth.
“Nothing,” I grumbled in a low tone, my eyes falling onto my hands. I felt her nod beside me.
“Do you also think that I did it?” Her voice was low, cautious. I could only shake my head as I waited for her to reprimand me.
“Great. At least someone still has faith in me.” She chuckled smoothly. “It's time isn’t it? They are all already waiting.” She called out again, and once again, words failed me.
MY wolf growled in frustration and I felt like I could slap myself too. But I had so many things to figure out if I was going to execute this well.
“It is. We should get going.” I responded in a low voice, matching hers. She got up and jumped, then clapped her hands.
“So, are you going to cuff me?” She tilted her head to the side, as if daring me. I really hated this whole thing. It was coating my tongue in bitterness and I just wanted to spit it all out.
“You are not a criminal, Aurelia.” I got to my feet, then took a step towards her. My hand shot out and caught a single strand of hair before looping it around my fingers. So smooth. So right. And yet, so wrong in so many ways it was driving me to the edge of delirium.
We stayed silent, her eyes roaming my face like she was imprinting my face to memory. Her scent washed over me like soft cotton, and I knew right there that I had to fix this.
I had no single glue on where I was going to start. Not with all the evidence gathered and presented to the court. But I had to.
“I am going to make this right.” My eyes found hers, “I promise you.”
Or I would fucking die trying.
Chapter 71- Don’t Leave MeMorning came quietly. For the first time since arriving at this place, I woke up without feeling like something terrible was about to happen. I stretched beneath the heavy weight of limbs tangled around me, then instinctively touched the sore spot on my shoulder. The mark was there. It had not been a dream. Malrik claimed me last night. I smiled ridiculously, the idea of wearing it like a fucking crown very very pleasing. I had spent my entire life feeling like I was incomplete, but now I had my wolf back, I had my mates beside me, and a mark on my shoulder that screamed to the world that I belonged somewhere. I belonged to them. The two men stirred awake as though they could sense that I was up too. The following minutes were spent with kisses and caresses that I almost forgot we were out in the wild. Unfortunately, happiness didn’t last long.By the time we returned to the campsite, I realized something was wrong. Derek was already waiting for us with
Chapter 70- Under The Blood Moon IIAURELIA POVThis was it. This was how heavens collided and how stars died. This was how the very foundation of the earth was laid. Under the red, blood moon, with two kings bowing in submission. I stood in my naked glory as the world’s deadliest creatures lowered their heads before me in complete surrender, like they had been waiting for this very moment since their creation. I stood there with godly confidence causing through my veins, a foreign sensation vibrating inside of me. I stood there, not as Aurelia the broken. Not as the girl who had her whole world ripped from her. Not as a girl who was left to be claimed by death. Not as the girl who was abandoned. Not as damaged goods. But as just… Aurelia. For the first time, I felt worthy of being mated to the world’s most lethal and dangerous kings. I felt worthy to be called theirs. I felt… whole. Ever so slowly, I inched to where they stood with heads still bowed, then settled myself between
Chapter 69- Under The Blood MoonMALRIK POVI thought I knew freedom. I thought I understood what it meant to finally shift at will. For centuries, I had believed freedom was simply the ability to become the creature that lived beneath my skin without losing control. I thought it meant denying everything that made me… me. Just to live long enough to see the rise of the next moon. Until the universe brought her to me, dumped her in the woods for me to find. And suddenly, freedom meant waking up with her in my arms. It meant hearing her breath beside me at night. It meant watching her take in everything around her with a small smile on her face. It meant seeing her accept us and be so natural around us you’d think she’d been studying us all her life. I thought that was the greatest thing I would ever experience.I was wrong.. Because nothing… Absolutely nothing… nothing in this world or beyond ever prepared me for this. The forest blurred around my beast. Heavy paws hammering agai
Chapter 68- The White WolfAZRAEL POVI was on edge. Everyone was. The entire clearing seemed to be holding its breath. Even the forest felt different tonight. It was too quiet. Too… watchful. I stood several feet from the ritual site, my eyes scanning the trees out of pure habit. “Remember to be on the lookout. Any first sign of danger…” I paused and stared at Derek. He didn’t even look surprised. I had been muttering the same thing ever since the sun went down beyond the horizon. “I snuff it out.” He nodded simply. I nodded. “I won’t be able to assist. I will be here the entire time, guarding Ysara. Besides, she bound me to both Malrik and Ysara, and anything that happens to me-,”“Happens to them. Got it, my liege.” He finished for me, and I nodded. But somehow I still couldn’t shake off the stiffness that bound my spine. “And-,”“I’ll go scout the area now.” He said dismissively, and I blew the breath out of my mouth. Of course he was fed up with me. I didn’t even take it to
Chapter 67- The ReturnTwo days. Two days had passed since we arrived in Elarith. And tonight, under the starry night, everything would change. I just didn’t know yet whether I should be excited or terrified. Probably both. Especially with how the forest was a silent bed, like it was awaiting something great. Something none of us could even see. I sat near the edge of our campsite, my knees drawn up slightly and a stick in my hand. My eyes were fixated on Ysara as she silently prepared for the ritual. She had been… off. The whole evening, she had been off. Not angry. Not bad. Just… different. I had lived with Ysara and seen her perform her rituals. I had watched her draw symbols, mix weird herbs, whisper incantations, light candles and casually threaten spirits as though they were nothing but annoying neighbours. I had seen everything she was capable of and more. But tonight?Tonight she looked almost regal. Almost… unrecognizable. The girl with the endless sass and inappropriat
Chapter 66- The Calm Before The StormAURELIA POVElarith was nothing as I had imagined. And I realized just then that the painting told only half of the story. It was quieter. Older. And somehow… alive.I walked slowly between the ruins, my fingers brushing against the rough surface of an ancient stone wall. It felt like the very ground I was walking on was alive with something ancient. Something so powerful it could end the world if it were resurrected. Ancient power hummed in the air, causing a cold shiver to sink deep into my bones. I sucked in a breath and trudged further. My eyes took in the wonder swallowed by nature. Trees emerged where stone once was, moss and greenery covering the space. I reached out with my hand and traced a line on the stone wall with my finger. The moment my skin touched it, something surged through me. It sizzled through my brain like electricity, travelling through my entire body. It pulsed beneath my fingertips like a heartbeat buried deep within t
Chapter 3- The Enemy I CuddledAURELIA POVThe holding cell was murky. Cold. The luxurious ballgown I wore felt like useless armor that only crushed me down with its weight. The earrings I carefully picked some time this morning were somewhere on the floor. The hum of festivities continuing above
Chapter 3- A Man Who Did NothingRONAN POVThe courtroom seemed to be spinning. Or maybe it was just my wolf screaming inside my head for standing there. For watching. For doing nothing. I have faced war. I have shaken hands with the grim reaper himself. I have laughed in the face of fear and bloo
Chapter 2- The Poisoned CrownAURELIA POVAs my father’s heiress and future leader of our pack, I had stood in this same courtroom my entire life. I knew the outlay of it like I knew my name. Never once did I imagine I would be standing in it, in this manner. In the middle. Alone. Shocked. Confus
Chapter 1: The Perfect DaughterAURELIA“Move those flowers two inches to the left before I lose my mind.” The servant carrying the crystal vase nearly stumbled over his own feet in panic before correcting the arrangement with trembling hands. I stared at it for a second longer, tilting my head. T
