Chapter 2

Author: Clear Dreams
The sound of Liam's voice woke me the next morning.

He was out on the balcony with his phone pressed to his ear and a solemn look on his face.

"You fell? Is it serious?

"Don't cry. It's fine if the necklace broke, as long as you're not hurt. Hang in there. I'm on my way." His tone was thick with worry and tenderness.

Then, he pushed open the bedroom door. He barged in so loudly he seemed to have forgotten I was still asleep.

Catching sight of my open eyes, he froze. "Sorry, did I wake you?"

Liam leaned down, aiming to drop a kiss on my forehead.

But I turned my head away and asked softly, "Leaving so early?"

His posture went stiff for a second before he straightened up, acting as if nothing had happened.

"Lilith accidentally dropped the necklace. She's hysterical on the phone. I'm worried about her. I need to run over."

He pulled on his jacket as he spoke, even taking the time to carefully style his hair with mousse.

"Liam," I called out suddenly.

"Yeah?"

"I want to check on my ceremonial dress."

His hands paused in his hair.

The dress I wanted to see was based on a design Liam and I had drawn together.

After handing it to the designer, we had spent an entire year going back and forth until the final piece was completed.

Liam had promised I would be the most breathtaking bride in the entire pack.

He had said that as soon as he succeeded as Alpha, we would go try it on and take pictures.

Liam turned around with a small frown and pressed his lips together. "There's no rush to try on the dress today. Lilith is in a bad state right now. I need to go calm her down first. Once I get past this busy period, I'll go with you, alright?"

I lowered my eyes and nodded. "Okay."

Liam let out a sigh of relief, his demeanor softening noticeably. He leaned down and patted my head. His tone became tender as he said, "Wait for me to come back."

I got up and stood on the balcony, watching him rush off. Then, I turned back inside to finish packing my luggage.

At the very top of the closet sat a dusty storage box. I climbed onto a stool to pull it down.

It was packed with off-season clothes and odds and ends. Lying right at the top was a white shirt, still stained with sauce.

I rested my fingers on the spot, pressing against the blotch.

Memories came rushing back to me, beyond my control.

Back then, right after Liam was confirmed as the heir, his schedule was packed to the brim.

Yet knowing my stomach was sensitive, he insisted on cooking for me every day—three meals a day, without fail.

Once, I casually mentioned wanting to try meat sauce from Westervale.

He traveled halfway across the kingdom just to find someone there to teach him how to make it, completely unaware that he had splattered sauce all over his new shirt.

By the time he returned, it was late at night and pouring rain. He was shivering from the cold, but the sauce wrapped in his coat was still warm.

He had said, "I'll learn how to make whatever you want to eat. That way, whenever you crave it, I'll always have it ready for you."

And now?

Even going together to see my ceremonial dress—a promise he made—had become a burden I was placing on him.

I finished packing and zipped my suitcase shut.

Honestly, I didn't own much. After spending half the day going through everything, I had only packed a few everyday clothes.

The rest were things Liam had bought for me based on his assistant Lilith Powell's tastes.

"Lilith says this style is trending among the shewolves lately. Give it a try.

"Lilith looks so pretty with this hair accessory, so I bought one for you too."

I cleared out all those items and laid them out neatly on the bed.

As I picked up the suitcase, its corner bumped into the edge of the vanity table.

A glass specimen with an embedded evening primrose rolled off and shattered on the floor.

A heavy scent of evening primrose instantly filled the room.

I immediately covered my nose and mouth as a wave of intense nausea surged up my throat.

I was severely allergic to evening primrose. Even just smelling it would break me out in hives.

And that specimen was something Liam had brought home just two days ago because evening primrose was Lilith's absolute favorite.

He just watched me from a distance, standing there from sunrise to sunset.Once, a heavy blizzard hit Nordravia. By the time afternoon training ended, the snow still showed no sign of stopping. The snow came down relentlessly, and the wind whipped icy particles against my face.Just as I was bracing myself to charge through the snow, a black umbrella suddenly appeared over my head.I turned around and saw Liam."Freya, the snow's too heavy. Let me walk you back."Having grown up in Southmere, Liam had never seen a blizzard like this.Half his shoulder was caked in snow, his nose was reddened from the freezing cold, and his lips were a p

I stared at the moonstone necklace. For the longest time, I had dreamed of having it. Back then, I believed that wearing it meant possessing all of Liam's love. But now, I no longer needed his love."Liam," I called out quietly. He snapped his head up, a spark of hope flaring in his eyes."Lilith wore that necklace. I find it revolting."At my words, the spark in his eyes died instantly. He babbled, desperately trying to explain, "Freya, listen to me! There was really nothing between Lilith and me! I only ever saw her as a sister! My mother acted completely on her own that night. I had no idea beforehand, and I had a huge fight with her afterward!"I've already sent Lilith away to one of Ashmoon's subsidiary packs. She will never appear in front of us again. Freya, please, come back with me. Please."He spoke faster and faster, and his voice grew raspier, making him look utterly pitiable.Yet inside, I felt not even a ripple of emotion.Back then, when Liam's mother, Elana G

Six months later, the National Tactical Competition kicked off.I led the Nordravia team straight to a first-place victory.Scarlett gave my shoulder a hard slap. "Freya! I knew you could do it!"Holding the trophy high, I smiled back at her.And then, my eyes caught his. I arrived in Nordravia at 4:00 am.The second the carriage door opened, a freezing wind whipped past, carrying specks of snow with it.It was completely different from the sticky, humid night breeze back in Southmere.I had barely dragged my suitcase onto the platform when I heard a familiar voice."Freya! Over here!"Scarlett Herman, my upperclassman, was standing behind the railing, wrapped in a silver-gray cloak, and waving frantically at me.As I walked over, she pulled me into a tight hug. "I've been dying for you to get here! Nordravia is in desperate need of a master tactician like you."Scarlett pulled back and pinched both of my cheeks."Look how thin you've gotten. Didn't they feed you in Southmere?" Her voice was laced with heartbreak as she frowned."Come on. I'm taking you out for authentic bear steaks to welcome you!"The heat was blasting inside the car. Leaning against the passenger seat, I watched the unfamiliar streets of Nordravia drift past the window.Ev

I muted my phone. With less than two hours left before my train departed, it was time to leave. My hand had just touched the doorknob when the lock clicked.Liam pushed the door open, looking hurried.Without even changing out of his shoes, he stepped straight onto the carpet, rummaging through the shelf in the entryway for something."Aren't you supposed to be with Lilith?" I asked.Liam didn't even look up. "She has an upset stomach and says she wants meat soup from the Westervale Market. I came back to grab my car keys to go buy some for her."The Westervale Market. The very place he had traveled halfway across the kingdom to learn how to make meat sauce for me all those years ago.Now he was making the trip again for another shewolf."Freya, can you please stop giving me an attitude? I really don't have time to keep coaxing you."Noticing my silence, Liam frowned. "I already told you Lilith is hurt. Do you expect me to just abandon her?"See? He knew this would upset me.

At 3:00 pm, the lock on the front door clicked and turned.I was crouching on the living room floor, taping down the last cardboard box.As Liam bent down to change his shoes, his gaze drifted across the living room, and he froze. "What are you doing?"He strode over with a frown.I snapped the tape and sealed the box in front of me. "Just clearing out some old things that aren't worth keeping."Liam's gaze landed on an open box nearby.Inside lay two crude wooden werewolf figurines—pieces Liam and I had carved together with our own hands. His expression darkened. "These?"He reached down, picked up the figurines, and held them in his palm. "These aren't worth keeping either?"Liam slammed the carvings down onto the coffee table with a loud clatter. "Freya, are you ever going to drop this? All this drama over a stupid necklace. No wonder Mom can't stand your attitude! Since you're throwing all this out, are you leaving too?"I straightened my back and replied flatly, "Yes."
