Chapter 1

The ride home passed in total silence.

Once inside, I silently hung my coat and hat by the entryway. My fingertips were still numb with the cold.

"Why so quiet?" Liam Hurley finished changing his shoes and looked over at me.

He stood backlit, his amber eyes glinting in the dim entry hall.

Instinctively, my hand drifted toward my bare collarbone. Then, I let it drop.

"What do you want me to say?" I asked.

Liam froze for a moment, then let out a helpless chuckle.

Just like he had done so many times before, he wanted to use that gesture to make all my troubles disappear.

But this time, I leaned back and dodged his hand.

His arm froze midair before he pulled it back naturally.

"Still throwing a fit over the necklace?"

He sounded exasperated, like a father reasoning with a moody toddler. "You know what Mom's like. She loves a flatterer. Whenever she went to the company, Lilith would go out of her way to look after her, always saying the sweetest things. Mom loves that.

"Freya, if you bothered to be even half as nice to her, do you really think she'd give the necklace to Lilith instead?"

I said nothing.

Liam frowned, his patience visibly wearing thin. "Look, it's just a moonstone necklace. So what if she gave it away? Throwing a tantrum at home is one thing, but did you really have to pull a face at the banquet?"

Pull a face?

I hadn't uttered a single bitter word all evening. I just quietly ate my dinner.

So, because I didn't congratulate Lilith like everyone else, I was pulling a face?

"Liam," I called out softly, my voice barely above a whisper. "You promised me that necklace five years ago."

His face went blank.

The confusion was genuine. He truly had no memory of ever saying that.

"Okay, look, maybe I did." He chuckled and gave me a careless shrug.

"But it belongs to Mom. It's hers to give. What was I supposed to do? Snatch it back and put it on you? Freya, you know that's ridiculous."

His voice was steady, as if the whole thing were utterly trivial.

"Are you really hurting that bad for an old necklace? All that 'family heirloom passed down through generations' stuff is just old-folk talk. At the end of the day, it's a chunk of rock. How much could it even be worth? Don't worry. I'll buy you a bigger, better one."

He walked over and crouched in front of me, looking up into my eyes.

From this angle, he always looked intensely earnest.

It was this exact look that had kept me waiting year after year, feeding me hope only to crush it every time.

Five years ago, right after Liam became heir to the Alpha seat, he bought me a beast-fang necklace at the market. It was expensive but nothing special.

He had told me, "Freya, once I'm firmly set as Alpha, I'll have Mom hand down our family's ancestral moonstone necklace to you. I want you to be the Luna of the Ashmoon pack."

I still kept that beast-fang necklace tucked away in my jewelry box, untouched because I couldn't bear to put it on.

"How about this?" Liam gazed at me with deep affection.

"Tomorrow I'll take you to Dustro Bay. You've been dying to see the bioluminescent sea there, right?"

My eyelashes fluttered.

So, he remembered I wanted to go to Dustro Bay.

So, he could make time after all.

Once upon a time, I would have squealed with joy and thrown my arms around his neck.

Now, I simply shook my head. "No need."

I pushed open the bedroom door. "I have plans tomorrow."

Liam blinked, caught off guard by the rejection.

Then he stood up, his tone brightening as if a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. "Well, in that case, I'll help Lilith pick out a dress tomorrow morning. She loves the necklace Mom gave her and wants a dress to match it.

"Honestly, Freya, you could learn a thing or two from Lilith. If you had her personality, I wouldn't always be stuck in the middle between you and Mom. Don't you think so?"

I didn't bother arguing. I just nodded passively. "I understand."

Liam smiled and leaned in to kiss my cheek. "I'll help her pick the dress in the morning and come home to spend the afternoon with you."

I smiled back, saying nothing.

He headed straight into the bathroom to shower.

I walked over to the bedroom nightstand and opened the drawer. Inside lay an official document.

An invitation from the Silverfang pack of Nordravia, with a train ticket pinned to it.

I folded the invitation carefully and slipped it into the inner lining of my half-packed suitcase.

Then I pulled out my phone and shot a text to my upperclassman in Nordravia. "I'll be there on time."

She replied instantly, "Finally came to your senses? Good! I'll arrange a grand ceremony to welcome you properly. It's the least I can do to show my respect!"

As I read the text, the corners of my mouth curled into a faint smile.

Liam stayed in Nordravia ever since he found out I was here.Word had it he pushed aside all pack affairs for the next six months, temporarily handing over his Alpha authority to his Beta.Every morning when I headed out to the training grounds, I would see him standing at the street corner, silently gazing in my direction. He never drew near. He just watched me from a distance, standing there from sunrise to sunset.Once, a heavy blizzard hit Nordravia. By the time afternoon training ended, the snow still showed no sign of stopping. The snow came down relentlessly, and the wind whipped icy particles against my face.Just as I was bracing myself to charge through the snow, a black umbrella suddenly appeared over my head.I turned around and saw Liam."Freya, the snow's too heavy. Let me walk you back."Having grown up in Southmere, Liam had never seen a blizzard like this.Half his shoulder was caked in snow, his nose was reddened from the freezing cold, and his lips were a p

I stared at the moonstone necklace. For the longest time, I had dreamed of having it. Back then, I believed that wearing it meant possessing all of Liam's love. But now, I no longer needed his love."Liam," I called out quietly. He snapped his head up, a spark of hope flaring in his eyes."Lilith wore that necklace. I find it revolting."At my words, the spark in his eyes died instantly. He babbled, desperately trying to explain, "Freya, listen to me! There was really nothing between Lilith and me! I only ever saw her as a sister! My mother acted completely on her own that night. I had no idea beforehand, and I had a huge fight with her afterward!"I've already sent Lilith away to one of Ashmoon's subsidiary packs. She will never appear in front of us again. Freya, please, come back with me. Please."He spoke faster and faster, and his voice grew raspier, making him look utterly pitiable.Yet inside, I felt not even a ripple of emotion.Back then, when Liam's mother, Elana G

Over the next few months, I hit the training grounds with Scarlett every day before dawn, tailoring combat strategies for the warriors. My days were exhausting, full, and deeply rewarding.I completely severed every remaining tie to Southmere.Nordravia's aurora was breathtaking. The food wasn't nearly as refined, but it tasted delicious.I no longer spent my life trapped in endless waiting, and I no longer had to compromise for a man who constantly whispered "not to worry" in my ear.…Time flew by. Six months later, the National Tactical Competition kicked off.I led the Nordravia team straight to a first-place victory.Scarlett gave my shoulder a hard slap. "Freya! I knew you could do it!"Holding the trophy high, I smiled back at her.And then, my eyes caught his. I arrived in Nordravia at 4:00 am.The second the carriage door opened, a freezing wind whipped past, carrying specks of snow with it.It was completely different from the sticky, humid night breeze back in Southmere.I had barely dragged my suitcase onto the platform when I heard a familiar voice."Freya! Over here!"Scarlett Herman, my upperclassman, was standing behind the railing, wrapped in a silver-gray cloak, and waving frantically at me.As I walked over, she pulled me into a tight hug. "I've been dying for you to get here! Nordravia is in desperate need of a master tactician like you."Scarlett pulled back and pinched both of my cheeks."Look how thin you've gotten. Didn't they feed you in Southmere?" Her voice was laced with heartbreak as she frowned."Come on. I'm taking you out for authentic bear steaks to welcome you!"The heat was blasting inside the car. Leaning against the passenger seat, I watched the unfamiliar streets of Nordravia drift past the window.Ev

I muted my phone. With less than two hours left before my train departed, it was time to leave. My hand had just touched the doorknob when the lock clicked.Liam pushed the door open, looking hurried.Without even changing out of his shoes, he stepped straight onto the carpet, rummaging through the shelf in the entryway for something."Aren't you supposed to be with Lilith?" I asked.Liam didn't even look up. "She has an upset stomach and says she wants meat soup from the Westervale Market. I came back to grab my car keys to go buy some for her."The Westervale Market. The very place he had traveled halfway across the kingdom to learn how to make meat sauce for me all those years ago.Now he was making the trip again for another shewolf."Freya, can you please stop giving me an attitude? I really don't have time to keep coaxing you."Noticing my silence, Liam frowned. "I already told you Lilith is hurt. Do you expect me to just abandon her?"See? He knew this would upset me.

At 3:00 pm, the lock on the front door clicked and turned.I was crouching on the living room floor, taping down the last cardboard box.As Liam bent down to change his shoes, his gaze drifted across the living room, and he froze. "What are you doing?"He strode over with a frown.I snapped the tape and sealed the box in front of me. "Just clearing out some old things that aren't worth keeping."Liam's gaze landed on an open box nearby.Inside lay two crude wooden werewolf figurines—pieces Liam and I had carved together with our own hands. His expression darkened. "These?"He reached down, picked up the figurines, and held them in his palm. "These aren't worth keeping either?"Liam slammed the carvings down onto the coffee table with a loud clatter. "Freya, are you ever going to drop this? All this drama over a stupid necklace. No wonder Mom can't stand your attitude! Since you're throwing all this out, are you leaving too?"I straightened my back and replied flatly, "Yes."
