LOGINI woke with a pounding headache.
The first thing I did was swallow a hangover pill before dragging myself into the shower. The almost freezing water shocked my senses awake, but it couldn't wash away the fragments of yesterday that kept replaying in my mind.
Some conversations were missing.
Others were painfully clear.
By the time I finished getting ready, I'd pinned my hair back with a clip and slipped into a charcoal pencil skirt with a loose baby-blue satin blouse.
Today was going to be a long day.
Surprisingly, I was the first person to arrive at Parker Wines. Traffic had been unusually light, and there hadn't even been a queue at my favorite café.
I balanced my coffee beside my laptop, switched it on and absentmindedly scrolled through social media while waiting for the office to come alive.
The elevator chimed.
Without looking up, I smiled faintly.
"Morning, Laila."
"Good morning."
The deep masculine voice made me jump.
My eyes snapped upward.
Leonard Parker stood on the other side of my desk.
"G-Good morning, Mr. Parker." Heat rushed to my cheeks. "I'm sorry... I thought you were Laila. I wasn't expecting you this early."
He didn't answer immediately.
Instead, his blue eyes drifted over me with unsettling calm, taking in every detail before returning to my face.
One hand rested casually inside the pocket of his navy trousers, his tailored blazer fitting him with effortless perfection.
My heartbeat stumbled.
Stop it.
He has no idea what you were thinking about last night.
"Good morning, Blair."
His voice remained perfectly composed.
"Will Laila be long?"
For a brief second, disappointment flickered across his features, quickly replaced by the detached professionalism I'd first seen the day we met.
"I... I'm not sure. I don't think she'll—"
The elevator chimed again.
Both of us turned.
Laila stepped out, touching up her lipstick as she walked.
Leonard interrupted me without hesitation.
"Ah. There you are."
His expression softened instantly.
"Laila, darling, come to my office when you're ready."
Her eyes widened.
"Y-Yes, of course, Mr. Parker!"
He rewarded her with a polite smile before walking away without another glance in my direction.
I remained frozen beside my desk.
What... had just happened?
Only yesterday he'd been standing close enough for me to feel his breath.
Today...
I barely existed.
Laila hurried after him, dropping her handbag onto her chair before disappearing into his office.
I stared after them, irritation building inside me.
The blinds were open.
From where I sat, I could see Leonard leaning comfortably against his desk, smiling while Laila laughed at something he'd said.
She tossed her hair over one shoulder.
He kept smiling.
For one fleeting second, his gaze lifted and met mine through the glass.
His smile widened ever so slightly.
I looked away first.
Fifteen minutes later, Laila returned positively glowing.
She collapsed into her chair with a dreamy sigh.
"I've officially had the best morning since I started working here!"
She grabbed my arm excitedly.
"He finally noticed me, Blair. I'm telling you... I think he's interested."
"Oh, really?"
The sarcasm escaped before I could stop it.
She didn't even notice.
"He called me darling, asked how yesterday went, apologized for being in a bad mood..." She practically squealed. "He said he's feeling much better today."
I forced a smile.
"So that's what he told you."
Out of the corner of my eye, I glanced toward his office.
Leonard sat behind his desk, completely absorbed in his laptop, absentmindedly tapping the end of a pen against his lips.
Ridiculously handsome.
Ridiculously irritating.
I tore my eyes away.
"And there's more!" Laila whispered dramatically.
"He's coming to today's social gathering."
I blinked.
"What?"
"He never comes!"
That was true.
Every Friday after work, the company hosted an informal gathering in the gardens behind the building.
Cocktails.
Canapés.
Music.
Beanbags scattered across the lawn.
Elegant fountains illuminated after sunset.
A chance for employees to relax together.
Leonard Parker had never attended.
Not once.
"I just know it's because of me," Laila said with absolute confidence.
Of course you do.
If he wanted to flirt with her, he certainly didn't need an entire company event to do it.
One smile would probably be enough for her to follow him anywhere.
For a brief moment, I considered skipping the gathering altogether.
Unfortunately, I'd already promised Jonathan I'd go.
He was convinced one of the new security guards was secretly gay and had decided it was his personal mission to help the poor man "discover himself."
There was no escaping tonight.
The afternoon crawled by.
Leonard came and went from his office countless times.
Every now and then, he'd stop to exchange a few words with Laila.
A smile.
A playful remark.
Once, I even caught him giving her a wink.
He never acknowledged me.
Not once.
Fine.
This was exactly what I'd expected from the beginning.
He'd enjoyed the chase.
Once he'd realized I wasn't going to make things easy, he'd simply moved on to the next woman.
That fit perfectly with the reputation everyone whispered about.
So why...
Why did it bother me so much?
I had absolutely no reason to feel angry.
And certainly no reason to feel jealous.
Leonard Parker had never been mine.
He never would be.
So why did being ignored hurt far more than being noticed ever should have?
I woke up to a very discreet maid informing me that lunch was ready and served. When I arrived downstairs, I discovered I would be having lunch alone. The food was divine.Baked salmon with potatoes and asparagus.Something light. After lunch, I decided to take another walk through the vineyards. I greeted the people already working among the vines and even dipped my feet into the pool before heading back inside. Then I returned to my room.I was alone. And incredibly bored. The house was completely silent. The clock was already approaching five in the afternoon, and Leonard still hadn’t left his office.I gathered my courage and made my way there.I reconsidered knocking about ten times before finally forcing myself to do it.“Mmm… Can I come in?”No answer. After a few seconds, I realized I had been completely ignored and turned around to
“What issue do you need me to sort out?”I’m so embarrassed that I can’t find the words to answer him. He doesn’t seem to have caught on to the topic of our conversation. But please, Fate, give me a break! The breeze feels pleasant, and the sunlight reflecting off the back of this hunk takes my breath away.“What’s the matter, Blair?”I come back down to earth and hurry to tell him it was nothing, that Lina was just joking. He raises an eyebrow but doesn’t press the issue. We stand in silence for a few seconds until the tension becomes palpable. My heart starts racing again.“Do you have any food allergies?”“Mmm… not that I know of.”“Is there anything you don’t like? Broccoli or something?”His tone is bored, and he turns back to his phone.“I like almost everything, except for… well, livers and stuff like that.”“Mm. Great. I’ll let my chef know about that.”“Leonard, we need to talk.”He finally looks up at me, waiting.“I know you feel guilty about what happened and you’re trying
The fresh air hits my face, filling my lungs. It feels so good to breathe such pure air and the view is wonderful. We walk down the first few flights of stairs toward a large deck with a huge pool and lounge chairs nearby. We sit in a couple of chairs with a table between us and a beach umbrella overhead. The entire property blends seamlessly into the landscape. It’s undoubtedly something unique.“Blair, I’m so sorry about what happened.”Lina breaks the pleasant silence and pulls me out of my thoughts.“Thank you, Lina.”I give her a reassuring smile.I can tell she genuinely feels bad about what happened to me.“You know, my brother has never brought anyone here.” She pauses. “I mean, no woman has ever set foot in here besides me.”She flashes a mischievous smile.I don’t understand where she’s going with this.“I find that hard to believe,” I say, laughing. “Your brother’s love life is splashed all over the magazine covers.”“Yeah, you’re right. He attracts women and was quite the
The three of us are sitting at the table, with Leonard in the middle.Lina is spreading butter on a piece of bread, while I stir my coffee and eat some cookies.“So… Blair, do you work with my brother?”The sudden break in the silence and the question make Leonard sigh in exasperation at his sister. She ignores him.“Not with your… your brother, but for him.”“And how long have you been working for him?”“Lina, I’m here.”“Shh! I’m talking to Blair!”Leonard grunts but keeps quiet.“I’ve been working for two years.”“Mmm… Tell us more about yourself, Blair! Do you live with your parents or…”“Lina, that’s too personal.”“No, never mind.”I answer before she can continue.“I live alone. My mother passed away, a
“Sorry. I wanted to explain that she wasn’t my wife, but my sister, but you didn’t even let me speak.”Leonard’s expression is stern.Lina, on the other hand, looks amused.“My dear brother, what are you doing? I thought you didn’t mix business with pleasure.”She laughs loudly and turns toward him. Neither of us finds it funny. But he has the nerve to roll his eyes at her and tell her to leave.I stay where I am.Lina turns back to me.“Sorry.”She whispers it before leaving. Now we’re alone.Leonard maintains his stern, irritated expression.“I didn’t know your opinion of me was that I was a traitor and a pig.”I look down at my feet, suddenly embarrassed.I didn’t want him to have heard that.“And a liar…”I say quietly. He gives me a mocking smile.“Did you really think Lina was my wife?”He raises an eyebrow.I feel a pang of jealous
Leonard quickly backs away from me, positioning himself in front of me.His movements are too quick. His protective stance puts all my senses on high alert. Fear engulfs me, and I’m overcome by paralysis. The door swings open, and a woman walks in carrying several bags.Leonard tenses. And I realize he hasn’t canceled his plans.Shit.The woman is beautiful; long, wavy honey-colored hair, tall and slender, brown eyes and full lips, high cheekbones, manicured nails painted light pink. Nothing is out of place. This is exactly how I would imagine Aphrodite.“Lina!”Leonard’s surprised voice confirms that I really shouldn’t be here.Jealousy and insecurity are immediately replaced by fear and panic. And now, instead of being glued to the floor, I start backing away, trying to escape this embarrassing situation.“Leo! Oh! You… you have company.”Leo.There’s intimacy in the way she says it.Is she his girlfriend? The mystery woman has surprise written all over her perfect face. She stands
