INICIAR SESIÓNI found Jonathan waiting in the lobby.
Friday evenings always transformed Parker Wines into a completely different place. Laughter echoed through the building, conversations became louder, and everyone seemed lighter now that another exhausting week had come to an end.
I waved as soon as I spotted him.
He smiled back, but something was off.
His usual playful expression had vanished, replaced by an uneasy frown.
"Ready to introduce me to my future husband?" he joked, though the smile never quite reached his eyes.
"You don't sound very excited."
"I need to talk to you first."
His tone immediately caught my attention.
"What happened?"
Before he could answer, two coworkers appeared beside us, insisting we join everyone outside before all the good cocktails disappeared.
Jonathan shot me an apologetic look.
"We'll talk later."
The company garden looked beautiful under the warm evening lights.
Soft music drifted through the air while elegant fountains sparkled behind groups of employees scattered across beanbags and cocktail tables.
It was everyone's favorite moment of the week.
For a few hours, Parker Wines stopped feeling like work.
We walked toward the outdoor bar.
"Two mimosas," Jonathan said.
I had barely taken my first sip before someone approached me.
"I've always thought you were intriguing."
An accountant from the second floor.
I recognized his face but couldn't remember his name.
I smiled politely and shook his hand.
Before our conversation could continue, another coworker interrupted us.
Then another.
And another.
Within minutes, I found myself speaking to people who had never acknowledged my existence before.
One of them stepped closer.
"Hi, Blair."
"Hi."
"I'm Rick. Marketing."
"Oh..."
Recognition finally dawned.
"I've seen you around."
"I've seen you too."
He smiled nervously.
"I've wanted to ask you something for a long time."
He extended his hand.
I shook it.
He didn't let go.
"I think you're beautiful."
My smile faltered.
"Would you like to have dinner with me sometime?"
I tried to pull my hand back.
His grip tightened slightly.
Around us, conversations seemed to slow.
Jonathan stood several meters away, trapped in another conversation while desperately trying to get my attention.
My pulse quickened.
Why was everyone staring?
Why did it suddenly feel impossible to breathe?
"No."
A deep voice cut cleanly through the crowd.
"She won't."
Every muscle in my body froze.
Leonard.
Rick immediately released my hand.
"Mr. Parker... I was just talking to Blair."
"I noticed."
His tone was calm.
Cold.
"I'm not deaf."
The atmosphere changed instantly.
The lively chatter faded into uneasy murmurs.
Nobody moved.
Nobody interrupted.
Rick forced an awkward smile.
"It was nice talking to you, Blair."
He wasn't looking at me.
He was looking at Leonard.
Seconds later, he disappeared into the crowd.
The conversations slowly resumed.
I remained rooted to the spot.
"Blair."
I turned.
Leonard stood close enough for the familiar woody scent of his cologne to reach me.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Parker."
"Can we talk?"
"Alone."
I instinctively searched for Jonathan.
He noticed.
Our eyes met.
He pressed his palms together apologetically before shrugging.
There would be no rescue.
I nodded.
Without another word, Leonard rested a hand lightly against the small of my back, guiding me toward the building.
The simple touch sent an involuntary shiver through me.
Neither of us spoke.
The click of my heels echoed across the marble floor as we passed reception, the elevators, and the empty corridors.
Instead of stopping at his office, he continued walking.
My stomach tightened.
Where was he taking me?
He finally stopped in front of the company's private gym.
Opening the door, he gestured for me to walk inside first.
Every possible scenario raced through my mind.
This was it.
He was going to fire me.
And somehow, he'd chosen the gym to do it.
Perfect.
I walked inside.
The room was almost empty.
Only the soft ambient lights illuminated the boxing ring and the rows of hanging punching bags.
Silence surrounded us.
Leonard closed the door behind us before walking toward the ring.
He leaned casually against the ropes, crossing his arms.
I remained standing beside one of the punching bags, trying to steady my breathing.
I'd never been fired before.
I took a slow breath.
"Mr. Parker..."
I forced myself to meet his eyes.
"We're alone now."
I swallowed.
"What did you want to talk to me about?"
I woke up to a very discreet maid informing me that lunch was ready and served. When I arrived downstairs, I discovered I would be having lunch alone. The food was divine.Baked salmon with potatoes and asparagus.Something light. After lunch, I decided to take another walk through the vineyards. I greeted the people already working among the vines and even dipped my feet into the pool before heading back inside. Then I returned to my room.I was alone. And incredibly bored. The house was completely silent. The clock was already approaching five in the afternoon, and Leonard still hadn’t left his office.I gathered my courage and made my way there.I reconsidered knocking about ten times before finally forcing myself to do it.“Mmm… Can I come in?”No answer. After a few seconds, I realized I had been completely ignored and turned around to
“What issue do you need me to sort out?”I’m so embarrassed that I can’t find the words to answer him. He doesn’t seem to have caught on to the topic of our conversation. But please, Fate, give me a break! The breeze feels pleasant, and the sunlight reflecting off the back of this hunk takes my breath away.“What’s the matter, Blair?”I come back down to earth and hurry to tell him it was nothing, that Lina was just joking. He raises an eyebrow but doesn’t press the issue. We stand in silence for a few seconds until the tension becomes palpable. My heart starts racing again.“Do you have any food allergies?”“Mmm… not that I know of.”“Is there anything you don’t like? Broccoli or something?”His tone is bored, and he turns back to his phone.“I like almost everything, except for… well, livers and stuff like that.”“Mm. Great. I’ll let my chef know about that.”“Leonard, we need to talk.”He finally looks up at me, waiting.“I know you feel guilty about what happened and you’re trying
The fresh air hits my face, filling my lungs. It feels so good to breathe such pure air and the view is wonderful. We walk down the first few flights of stairs toward a large deck with a huge pool and lounge chairs nearby. We sit in a couple of chairs with a table between us and a beach umbrella overhead. The entire property blends seamlessly into the landscape. It’s undoubtedly something unique.“Blair, I’m so sorry about what happened.”Lina breaks the pleasant silence and pulls me out of my thoughts.“Thank you, Lina.”I give her a reassuring smile.I can tell she genuinely feels bad about what happened to me.“You know, my brother has never brought anyone here.” She pauses. “I mean, no woman has ever set foot in here besides me.”She flashes a mischievous smile.I don’t understand where she’s going with this.“I find that hard to believe,” I say, laughing. “Your brother’s love life is splashed all over the magazine covers.”“Yeah, you’re right. He attracts women and was quite the
The three of us are sitting at the table, with Leonard in the middle.Lina is spreading butter on a piece of bread, while I stir my coffee and eat some cookies.“So… Blair, do you work with my brother?”The sudden break in the silence and the question make Leonard sigh in exasperation at his sister. She ignores him.“Not with your… your brother, but for him.”“And how long have you been working for him?”“Lina, I’m here.”“Shh! I’m talking to Blair!”Leonard grunts but keeps quiet.“I’ve been working for two years.”“Mmm… Tell us more about yourself, Blair! Do you live with your parents or…”“Lina, that’s too personal.”“No, never mind.”I answer before she can continue.“I live alone. My mother passed away, a
“Sorry. I wanted to explain that she wasn’t my wife, but my sister, but you didn’t even let me speak.”Leonard’s expression is stern.Lina, on the other hand, looks amused.“My dear brother, what are you doing? I thought you didn’t mix business with pleasure.”She laughs loudly and turns toward him. Neither of us finds it funny. But he has the nerve to roll his eyes at her and tell her to leave.I stay where I am.Lina turns back to me.“Sorry.”She whispers it before leaving. Now we’re alone.Leonard maintains his stern, irritated expression.“I didn’t know your opinion of me was that I was a traitor and a pig.”I look down at my feet, suddenly embarrassed.I didn’t want him to have heard that.“And a liar…”I say quietly. He gives me a mocking smile.“Did you really think Lina was my wife?”He raises an eyebrow.I feel a pang of jealous
Leonard quickly backs away from me, positioning himself in front of me.His movements are too quick. His protective stance puts all my senses on high alert. Fear engulfs me, and I’m overcome by paralysis. The door swings open, and a woman walks in carrying several bags.Leonard tenses. And I realize he hasn’t canceled his plans.Shit.The woman is beautiful; long, wavy honey-colored hair, tall and slender, brown eyes and full lips, high cheekbones, manicured nails painted light pink. Nothing is out of place. This is exactly how I would imagine Aphrodite.“Lina!”Leonard’s surprised voice confirms that I really shouldn’t be here.Jealousy and insecurity are immediately replaced by fear and panic. And now, instead of being glued to the floor, I start backing away, trying to escape this embarrassing situation.“Leo! Oh! You… you have company.”Leo.There’s intimacy in the way she says it.Is she his girlfriend? The mystery woman has surprise written all over her perfect face. She stands
