Mia's POV:

Zayn slept on the couch.

I made a mental note to get an extra mattress from when guests crash over and I can't share my bed. Around a little after 8AM, I was making coffee and breakfast when he stirred.

He sat up, his hair an unruly mess atop his head. He blinked, looked around, and then rubbed his face, sighing as he remembered what happened mere hours ago.

After he was done crying, he told me everything. Why did he stop going to school? His father's beatings had started growing more frequent. Once, he tried to hit Talia and Zayn had used himself as a human shield.

Whenever he brought money home, his father —Mike— was happy and nonviolent. So, Zayn figured that was the one way to keep him like that.

He started doing odd jobs — washing cars, mowing lawns, doing laundry, walking dogs, assignments. He did quite a lot of things. But, they just weren't enough to placate his father and still feed them.
